WINDOW FOR VEHICLE-CURTAINS.
naeonoe.
To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that I, Rrro nr. O. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful WVindow for Vehicle-Curtains, of WhlCh the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to windows for vehicle curtains and more particularly for the curtains of automobiles.
It is the object of the invention to provide a vehicle curtain window comprlsing. a frame adapted to be clamped to the curtain, marginally t0 the window opening therein, and providing a seat for the glass or like transparent member, and to provlde means for securing the glass in said frame, independent of the means "attaching the frame to the curtain.
lVith this object in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l-is an interior view of the window, with the glass retaining ring removed. 7 v
Fig. 2 is a view of the inner side of a portion of said retaining ring.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, showing in detail the means clamping the frame for the glass to the curtain, and for retaining the glass in said frame.
In thesevie'ws the reference character 1 designates a vehicle curtain having a circular window opening, and 2 is a circular metallic frame or ring which is exteriorly secured to said curtain, marginally of said opening. The curtain engages the inner face of said ring (see Fig. 3) and is clamped into a shallow annular channel or groove 3 in said faceby a sheet metal ring 4, the edges of which force the engaged portions of the curtain into deepened marginal portions 5 of the groove 3.- Between said edges the ring 4 is bowed out from the ring 2 and is secured to the latter by a plurality of tap screws 6. To adapt the clampingvring 4 to more firmly engage the curtain 1, the edges of said ring are scalloped as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. An. inwardly projecting flange 7 on the frame 2 provides a seat for the glass or other transparent member 8;the' portion of the curtain peripheral to the Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntefl J mg "Z, 1921 Application filed May 10, 1920. Serial No. 380,069.
window opening being engaged between the edge of the glass and the frame 2, as indicated at 9, and further extended between the glass 8 and its seat 7 as shown at 10. To retain the glass in its frame there is employed an inner ring 11 curved in cross section to clear the. bowed ring 4, and' secured in place by a plurality of tap screws 12 which pass freely through suitably located openings 13 in the ring 4 and'engage the frame 2. The inner ring 11 bearsupon the frame 2 at each side of the groove 3, clamping the portions of the curtain which engage beneath it, and projects inwardly beyond the edge of the glass 8 sufficiently to retain the latter securely in place.
From the preceding description it will i be seen that the ring 11 andscrews 12 form a means for holding the glass in its frame quite independently of the ring 4 and screws 6 which are depended upon to secure the frame 2 to the curtain. Thus in case occasion arises to replace the glass this may be easily and expeditiously accomplished without disturbing the mounting of the window frame upon the curtain. In addition to holding the glass in place, however, the outer ring 11 supplements the ring 4 in clamping the frame to the curtain and also prevents the screws 6 from working free of the frame as a result of vibration. The exposed faces of the frame 2 and ring 11 may be nickel-plated or otherwise treated toimpart a finished and ornamental appearance to the device.
It will be apparent that by the above described means for securing the frame to the curtain independent of the glass or trans,- parency, the handling of the curtain in manufacture and hanging is facilitated, that breakageof the transparency'in such handling is avoided, that the'assembly of the glass within the frame or the removal or renewal thereof maybe quickly and conveniently accomplished without disturbing the fixed relation of the frame and curtain, and that the parts when finally assembled will be firmly held against slippage or'displacement through vlbration, thus insuring a substantially permanent and water-tight joint between the engaged parts.
What I' claim is:
1. In a window for vehicle curtains, the combination with a curtain having a window opening, of a transparent closure for said opening, a frame providing a seat for said closure, a clamping member securing said frame to the curtain, and a retaining member for said closure covering the clamping member and secured independently of the latter to said frame; 7
2. In a window for vehicle curtains, the combination with a curtain having a window opening, of a transparent closure for said opening, a frame providing a seat for said closure, a clamping member securing said frame to the curtain, and a retaining member for said closure covering the clamping member and secured independently of the latter to said frame, a portion of the curtain being engaged between said closure and its seat upon said frame.
3. In a window for vehicle curtains, the combination Witha curtain having a window opening, of. a transparent closure for said opening, a .frame providing a seat for said closure, a clamping member between which and said frame a portion of the curtain marginal to said opening is engaged, means securing said clamping member to the frame, a retaining member-for said closure covering said clamping member, and members securing said retaining member to the frame, passing freelythrough the clamping member. I
4:. In a Window for vehicle curtains, the combination with a curtain having a window opening, of a transparent closure for said opening, a frame providing a seat for said closure, said frame having a groove coextensive therewith, a clamping member detachably secured to said frame within said groove, between which member and said frame a portionof the curtain marginal to said opening is embraced, and a retaining member for said closure covering said clampingmember and detachably secured to the frame independently of said clamping member.
5. In a windowfor vehicle curtains, the combination with a curtain having a window opening, of a transparent closure for said opening, a frame providing a seat for said closure, said frame having a groove coextensive therewith, a clamping member detachably secured to said frame within said groove, between which member and said frame a portion of the curtain marginal to said opening is embraced, the edges of said member being scalloped to more securely engagethe curtain, and a retaining member for said closure covering said clamping member and detachably secured to the frame independently of said clamping member.
6. In a window for vehicle curtains, the combination with a curtain having a window opening, of a transparent closure for said opening, a frame providing a seat for said closure, said frame having a groove coextensive therewith having marginally deepened portions, a clamping member detachably secured to said frame within said groove and having scalloped edges engaging the curtain in the deepened portions of said groove, and a retaining member for the closure detachably secured to the frame independently of said clamping member.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification.
