{PATENT OFFICE. I
HASTINGS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HASTINGS MANUFACTUR- I ING- COMPANY, OF HASTINGS, MICHIGAN.
. 1 I VEHICLE CURTAIN WINDOW.
Application'filed November 18,1920, Serial No. 424,940. I Renewed May 25,1923.
T 0 all whom itmag concern;
Be it known thatiI, ABEN E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, county of Barry, and State ;of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Curtain WVindows, of which the following is a specification. I I This invention relates to improvements 1n vehicle curtain windows.
The main objects of thisinvention are toprovide a vehicle curtain window which is satisfactory for use in themanufacture of the vehicle curtains at. the factory, or may be employed as a repair means for vehicle curtains in the hands of the users; the same being easily, applied by an unskilled person and without the use of special tools. w 1
Further objects and objects relating to structural details, vwill definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the iiollowing specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointedout in the claim.
-A structure which is a preferred embodi-. ment of my inventlon 1s clearly illustrated inthe accompanying drawing,"forming apart of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a rear elevation of a vehicle top provided with a curtain embodying the features of my invention. I
Fig. II is an enlarged elevatlon of one of the windows, the curtain being partially broken away. I
Fig. III is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to of Figure II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the vehicle 'top' and 2 the rear curtain thereof.
The curtain is provided with window openin s 3. The panes 4 are ofglass. I provi ea supporting, frame for each pane, comprising a pair of sheet metal frame members 5 of crowning cross section disposed face to;
face, with their outer edges overlapping the edges of the curtain around the window opening and their inner edges overlapping the pane, as clearly shown'in Fig. III. The
frame members are provided with continu ous beads 6 at the top of their crowns, the
beads adding tothe rigidity of the frame members.
clamping of the curtain at the bolts. frame members are bythis means secured the section line of the'frame members upon 'the'curtain and pane with a' spring gripping action. The frame members have indentations 8 around their bolt holes,where-bythe indented portions are clamped upon the curtain, as shown in Fig. III. This prevents the distortion of the frame members and also secures a direct The to the curtain with their edges, in spring clamping engagement therewith, and the curtains are also directly clamped by the indented portions, so that the curtain will not pull out from between the frame members even underv very severe stress.
-My improvements are particularly well adapted for use in repairing curtains inthe hands of the users, and for repair'w'ork generally, but they are also desirable in new Clamping bolts 7 are disposed I work, as the panes are held in a very satisfactory manner and the parts are simple and economical to produce and quickly and economically assembled in a curtain.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to Letters Patent, iszl In. a vehicle curtain window, the combination with a curtain havlng a window open- 'ing therein, of a pane of less dimensions than that of the window open1ng,'an d a supporting' frame for said pane comprising a pair of sheet metal frame members disposed face the edges of the curtains around said open ing'and theirinner edges overlapping saidf secure by 9o to'face with their outer edges. overlapping and curtaiinsaid frame members bein'g'indented around their bolt holes whereby the edges of the frame members clamp the pane and curtain with aspring gripping action and the indented portions are clamped upon the curtain. I I
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal 1n the presence of two witnesses.
. ABEN E. JOHNSON. [n s.]
