To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. L. MANNY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Benton Harbor, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Forming Posting-Slips, of which the following is a specification. v
In. keeping books of accounts of business transactions it is in many cases desirable, while entering tive lines of a single sheet, to make duplicate or manifold copies of the items individually, so that they may be distributed and posted in several different lodgers, or other account books, by different bookkeepers at the same time. This cannot be done by cutting apart the separate items 01 an ordinary impression copy, since the slips are entirely too narrow and slender for convenient handling. The object of my present invention is the provision of a mechanical device whereby a copy may be conveniently made of each individual item as it is entered, of proper size for convenient use as a posting slip, and my invention consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of cooperating arts which constitute my novel device, tl ib essential elements of which are pointed out in the appended claims. 7

The platen 1 of my device is provided with s ring clips 2 by means of'which the entry s eet 3 and sheet of impression paper *4 are held in place thereon for writing. In
the present mstance these clips are riveted to corner brackets 5 at the upper and lower lefthand corners of the platen, the base portions 5 of which brackets are countersunk in the platen flush with the upper sura list of items on consecu- 1, illustrating the same gage studs 6 are secured to the bases 5 to provide for accurate positioning of the paper. Means for simultaneously releasing the clips 2 are provided, consisting of a rod 7 journaled in the brackets 5 and formed with bends 7 which, when the rod is turned by an operating knob 8, engage the clips and lift them out of engagement with the paper on the platen.
Rotatably mounted on a rod 9which extends between the upper ends of the brackets 5 parallel with the lefthand margin of the platen is a roll of paper 10, the free end of which passes between the side members 11 of a sheet metal paper-roll guide 11, and across the platen underneath the sheet of impression paper 4, to and under a guide and tearing cli 12 at the righthand edge of the platen. e side members 11 of the paper-roll guide 11 are orificed to engage the rod 9 and formed with slots which receive the rod 7, and the fitting of the parts is such that the inherent resiliency of the sheet metal and rods will afford a yielding frictional resistance to displacement. The inner lower edge of the guide is slightly curved and while not urged downward by spring face thereof, and
' pressure assists in a measure in keeping the sheets of paper smooth and flat upon the platen.
To provide for replacement of the paperroll, the ends of the rod 9 are of reduced diameter, forming short gudgeons 9 WhlCh engage sockets in the brackets 5. These brackets are ofsufiiciently flexible and res1l1- ent metal to permit them to be bent s1dewise out of engagement with the pivots, when the rod, with this paper-roll gulde attached, may be removed, and a fresh roll substituted.
At the right hand side of the'platen 1s arranged a bar 13 (in the present instance corrugated to increase its stiffness) upon which is slidingly mounted the guide 12 before mentioned. The end of the paper 10 passes under this guide and between two downa section of the paper,
wardly, the blade will cut into the upper edge of the paper and the tear follow the line of the blade thereacross.
The strip of paper 10 is preferably of about the Width of five writing lines upon the entry sheet, and if desired the entry sheet may be ruled with distinguishable lines at intervals corresponding to the width of the strip 10, this strip being of such width as to form posting strips of convenient size when torn off as above described.
With the foregoing explanation of the construction of my device, the manner in which it is used will readily be understood. The entry sheet-and impression paper are inserted under the clips and over the paper strip 10, with the guides 11 and 12 so adjusted that such strip will underlie the uppermost line on the entry sheet. After each entry of an item the strip 10 is drawn out the "width of the entry sheet and torn off, and from time to time the guides shifted downwardly so that the strip 10 will always be beneath the lines of the entry sheet as they are written upon. Obviously, if the strip is of such width as to underlie five writing lines of the entire sheet, the guides need be shifted only after every five entries; but if desired they may be adjusted and prising a platen arranged to support an entry sheet and an impression sheet, a rod adjacent the left hand margin of the margin of said platen, a second rod mounted on said platen adjacent said first mentioned rod,
-- said second rod being arranged to support a paper roll slidingly mounted thereon, a sliding guide engaging said rods and arranged to also engage said paper roll, and guide means adjacent the right hand margin of the platen for supporting the end portion of the paper of said roll transversely of theentry sheet.- Y
2. A device for forming posting slips comprising a platen arranged to support an entry sheet and an impression sheet, a rod mounted on said platen adjacent and parallel with one side thereof, said rod being-arranged to support a paper roll mounted to slide axiall thereon, and guide means on opposite si es of the platen for supporting the end portion of paper of said roll transversely of the entry sheet.
3. A device for forming posting slips comprising a platen, paper-holding means for securing an entry sheet and impression sheet to said platen comprising a manually operable rod adjacent one margin of said platen and means cooperatively connected there with for securing and releasing said sheets, a second rod mounted on said platen parallel with said first-mentioned rod, said second rod being arranged to support a paper roll mounted thereon, a sliding guide frictionally engaging said rods and also arranged to engage said paper roll, and a guide for the paper of the roll slidingly mounted on sa1d platen adjacent its opposite margin.
4. A device for forming posting slips comprising a platen, paper-holding means for securing an entry sheet and impression sheet to said platen comprising a manually operable rod adjacent one margin of said platen and means cooperatively connected therewith for securing and releasing said sheets, a second rod mounted on said platen parallel with said first-mentioned rod, said second rod. being arranged to support a paper roll mounted thereon, a sliding guide frictionally engaging said rods and also arranged to engage said paper roll, and a guide for the paper of the roll slidingly mountedpn said platen adjacent its opposite margm, sa1d guide being formed with a tearing blade.
5. A device for forming posting slips comprising a platen, paper-holding means for securing an entry sheet and impression sheet to said platen comprising a manually operable rod adjacent one margin of said platen and means cooperatively connected therewlth for securing and releasing said sheets, a second rod mounted on sa1d platen parallel with said first-mentioned rod, said second rod being arranged to support a paper roll mounted thereon, a sliding guide formed with orificed side members enga g said second rod on opposite sides of t e paper roll and also slidingly engagin said firstmentioned rod, and a guide for t e (paper of the roll slidingly mounted on sai platen adjacent its opposite margin.

A device for formin posting shps comprising a platen, aperolding means for securing an entry s eet and impression sheet to said platen comprising a pair of spring clips respectively mounted adjacent the upper and lower corners of said platen at one side thereof, and also comprisin a manually operable rotatable rod paralle with said margin and formed with bonds engaging said clips, a second rod mounted on sai platen parallel with said first-mentioned rod,
.said second rod being arranged to support a paper roll mounted thereon, and guide means for supporting the end portion of the paper of said roll transversely of the entry sheet. 7. A device for forming posting slips comprising a platen arranged to support an entry sheet and an impression sheet, a rod mounted on said platen adjacent and parallel with one side thereof, said rod being arranged to support a paper roll mounted to slide axially thereon, a bar secured at its ends to said platen adjacent the opposite side thereof, and a clip slidingly mounted on said bar and formed with depending tongues arranged to engage opposite sides of the strip of paper of the roll and with an intermediate outstanding tearing blade.
8. In a device of the character described, a
platen, a pair of sprin -metal brackets secured thereto adjacent t e upper and lower corners at one side margin thereof, a rod having ,gudgeons mounted in said brackets, a second rod mounted on said platen below said first-mentioned rod and adjacent said side margin of the platen, and a paper-roll guide having side members formed with orifices engaging ,said first-mentioned rod and with slots slidably engaging said second nentioned rod.
