UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GYRIL A. SOANS, OF CHICAGO, III'JIIZIINOIS, ABSIGNOR, BY ASSIGNMENTS, '10 ACME CARD SYSTEM COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA.
ms'rmo nnvror.
Application filed m 2a, 1914, Serial No. 841,450. Renewed August 2, 1913. Serial No. 248,074.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRIL A. SoANs, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented certain I new and useful Improvements in Listing a specification.
This invention relates to listing devices such as are applicable for indexes, telephone lists, credit systems and the like, and more particularly, to a construction adapted to removably hold a plurality of ,lIldlVldllEtl slips, over-lappin cards or other members. In devices for listing names, telephone numbers or other data, it is often necessary to permit of the expansion of certain portions of the system without interfering with the sequence in which the individual elements are positioned. In certain devices of this character paper slips have been removably held in the frame by inserting the ends of the slips under flanges formed by turning over the marginal edges of the frame. In such constructions however, it is necessary to provide mechanism for turning over the flanges of sheets of varying width and to handle the entire frame in order to produce such flanges.
The salient objects of the invention are to provide a marginal member adapted for use with webs of various widths; to provide a construction wherein a plurality of the slips may be 'held upon the opposite sides of a single central web; to so construct the marginal member that it may be employed without change on either edge of the central web; to rovide a construction which may be rolle drawn or otherwise cheaply manufactured; to form as an integral part of the marginal member a socket for receiving a pintle, handle or other mounting member; to utilize the bead on the outer edge of the marginal member as a guide for sliding tab and in general to produce an improved construction for detachably holding the plurality of the slips or other members.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a'perspective view of the device embodying my lnvention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line w-w of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 1/--(I/ of Fig. l.
Devices, of which the following is In the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the frame 1 which receives the slips comprises a cen-, tral web portion 2 which is provided at opposlte edges with marginal members 3 and 4 These marginal members are secured to the central web portions by any suitable means such as by the indentations 5. The upper and lower ends of the frames are provided with filler members 6 and 7 of greater width than the thickness of the central web thus forming shoulders which Patented Oct. 18, 1921.-
will prevent the passing of the strips out of either the top or bottom of the frame.
Referrlngto the particular construction of the marginal membersas shown in Figs.
2 and 3, it will be noticed the central portions 8 and 9 of these members lie substantially adjacent and in assembled position abut against the opposite faces of the central web member 2. The outer end of the marginal member is enlarged and rounded into a substantially circular bead 10, while at the opposite ends the members 8 and 9 are offset outwardly forming abutment shoulders 11 and 12. Extending inwardly from the shoulders last mentioned are substantially parallel flanges 13 and 14 beneath which the end of the member to be held such as the flexible strip 15 is inserted.
In assembling the parts the central web sheet 2 is cut to desired width, and marginal tion of the marginal members which reg isters with the upper and lower filler members 6 and 7 may be sealed or if left open the inner surface of such bead can be used as a bearing for receiving a pintle 18 or other mounting or handle member. web 2, which is held between the members 8 and 9 at its edges, extends into the bead 10 as shown in Fig. 2. Portions of the web extending into the head are cut away at The the top and bottom as shown in Fig. l to accommodate the pintles inserted therein.
1 also utilize the bead of the mar inal member as a guide for the sliding ta 19 which has a securing portion 20 substan-* tially complementary to the bead and contracted central portion of the marginal member upon which it is placed. llhis tab can be slid up or down as desired and it preferably has sutficient frictional engagement with the marginal member to hold it and plurality of difi'erent forms of the mar ginal members. While I have shown and described a particular construction, ll do not desire to limit my invention to the particular details. shown and described nor in any manner except as specified in the appended claims. I claim as my-invention:-
1. In a holder for members adapted to be removably retained by springing their edge under a flange, the combination with a central web, of a marginal member secured to said web, said marginal member having deressed central portions engaging opposite aces of the web, a bead member adapted to inclose and protect the edge of the web and an inwardly extending ofiset flange spaced from the web to receive the end of a 'mem her to be held.
2. in a holder for members adapted to be removably retained by springing their edges under a flange, the combination with a central web, of a marginal member secured to said web, said marginal member having contracted central portions engaging the opposite faces of the web, an outer bead portion embracing the edge of the web, transverse shoulders at the inner end of the contracted v leat er portions, and flanges extending inwardly from said shoulder portions, said flanges being spaced from the web to receive the ends of the members to be held.
3. in a holder for members adapted to be retained by springing their edges under a flange, the combination with a central web, of a marginal member secured to said web, said marginal member having contracted central portions, inwardly extending ofiset flanges for receiving members to be held, and a rounded bead inclosin the extreme edge ofthe web, and an indexmg tab having a securing portion embracing the rounded bead and slidable thereon.
4, in a holder for members adapted to be retained by springing their edges under a flange, the combination with a central web, of marginal members secured to opposite edges of said web, said marginal members having contracted central portions engaging opposite faces 9f the web and inwardly extendin ofiset flanges adapted to receive the ends 0 the members to be held, and a hollow bead embracing the extreme edge of the web, said head being open at one end to permit the insertion of a securing member, said web being also cut away to receive said securingmember.
5. In a holder for members'adapted to be retained by springing their edges under a flange, the combination with a central web,
of marginal members secured to opposite edges of said web, said marginal members having contracted central portions engaging opposite faces of the web and inwardly extending oflset flanges adapted to receive the ends of the members to be held, and a hollow bead embracing the extreme edge of the web, said bead being open at one end to permit of the insertion of a securing member, said web being also cut away to receivesaid securing member, and an indexing tab adapted to embrace the bead and slide thereon to different positions of adjustment.
