' J; s. MoDONALD. CARBON SHEET HOLDER.
No. 469,748. Patented Mar. 1 1892;
UNITED STATES 1 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. MCDONALD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'CARBON-SHEET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,748, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed December 31, 1889- Serial No. 335,547. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES S. MoDoNALD, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbon- Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in carbon-sheet holders detachable from but especially designed for use in connection with books and similar articles, and has for its prime object to have the holder of such character that the carbon-sheet may be readily and quickly attached thereto or detached therefrom, but when secured in position will be firmly held against accidental detachment.
Another object-is to avoid smudging or dirtying the leaves of the book by the pressure of the hand While writing by having the holder readily adjustable upon the book, so that the carbon will underlie only the portion of the sheet being written upon.
These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a book, showing a carbon -holder applied thereto embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section taken through the book and holder; Fig. 3, a detail plan view of the holder, and Figs. 4 and 5 enlarged sections showing the manner of securing the carhon-sheets in position.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the draw- 1ngs.
- Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a rectangular baseplate, preferably composed of thin sheet metal, to one corner of which is pivotally secured a bent or U-shaped clamp B of spring metal, the outer free end of which is preferably provided with a socket C, struck up therein and adaptedand arranged to receive a corresponding projection D, formed upon the base-plate when the clamp is forced down into position, straddling the upper edge of the base-plate. The carbon-sheet E, which may be of any suitable dimension, is bent over the upper edge of the base-plate with the body thereof lying upon the base-plate, and is secured in this position by means of the spring clamping-plate B, which is forced down upon so as to embrace said sheet and plate, the upper and forward edge F thereof being slightly curved or bent outwardly from the'base-plate to avoid tearing the carbonsheet or wrinkling the same when the clamp is forced down into position. As clearly shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, the lower fold or portion of the clamp B is made longer than the upper one, so that it will come against the edge of the body of leaves, and thus constitute a stop for limiting the inward movement of the plate and preventing the upper fold of the clamp from engaging over the uppermost leaf of the book. XVith this construction when the carbon-sheet has become worn beyond usefulness it may be readily and quickly detached from the holder and a new sheet substituted in place thereof.
In practice, when a pencil is employed for writing, it is frequently desirable that the carbon should also make an impression upon the back of the sheet being written upon, so as to strengthen the pencil characters, to which end it is necessary to employ a carbonsheet coated upon both faces thereof; but when this is not desired or apen is employed for writing I have provided an oiled sheet G, secured to the holder in the same manner as the carbon-sheet, and which may be laid beneath the sheet being written'upon, covering the carbon-sheet when an impression is not desired upon the back of the sheet being written upon, but which may be thrown back out of the way, as illustrated in Fig.1, Without detaching from the holder when such double impression is desired. I may here state, however, that this oiled sheet may be dispensed with entirely, as its employment is simply a matter of convenience and not of necessity, especially where the semi-carbon paper is employed.
With my detachable and adjustable carbonholder itis not necessary that the carbonsheet shall underlie the entire surface of the sheet being Written upon, but only a portion thereof, and thus the pressure of the hand in writing does not come upon the carbon-sheets, so as to smudge the manifold sheets beneath, the holder being readily slipped along the ICO book as the page is filled. However, if desired, the holder may be made the full size of the book.
I donot desire to limit myself to pivotally securing the spring-clamp to the base-plate, for it may be made detachable therefrom, but held in position by duplicating the socket and projection C D at the opposite edgeof the base-plate, although the pivotal connection is preferred, because it avoids the necessity of detaching the clamp and also the danger of loss or misplacement thereof when detached.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the detachable base-plate adapted to slide between the leaves of a book, of the spring-clamp embracing one edge thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the detachable base-plate adapted to slide between the leaves of a book, of the spring-clamp pivotally secured at one end to said plate, substantially as described.
3. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the base-plate, of the spring-clamp pivotally secured at one 'end thereto, and a catch device for the free end of said clamp, the upper forward edge of the clamp being bent or curved upwardly, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with a smooth detachable base-plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of the book, and a U-shaped spring-clamp pivoted near one corner of said plate and extending substantially from side to side thereof, substantially as set forth.
5. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with a smooth fiat base-plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book, a clamp pivoted at one end near one corner of said plate, and a catch for, locking said clam p in place, substantially as set forth.
6. In acarbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the detachable base-plate adapted to slide between the leaves of a book, of a Ushaped spring-clamp embracing one edge of said plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the base-plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book, of a U-shaped clamp pivoted to said base=plate so as to embrace the edge thereof, and a stop adapted to engage the edge of the book for preventing the upper fold of the clamp from engaging over the uppermostleaf of the book, substantially as described.
S. In a carbon-sheet holder, the combination, with the base-plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book, of a U-shaped clamp pivoted to said base-plate so as to embrace the edge thereof, the lower portion or fold of said clamp beinglonger than the upper portion thereof,so as to engage the edge of the book and prevent the said upper portion from engaging over the uppermost leaf, substantially as described.
