in lasts, and one of the objects thereof is to produce a simple, strong and practical last which can be broken or flexed to the desired extent so as to facilitatethe easy and ready removal of the samefrom the shoe without marring, breaking or pulling the shoe out of shape. Inmany' lasts a V-cut is provided to permit the necessary flexing or moving of the toe and heel parts of the last relative to each other and according to the present invention a construction is provided which permits this V to be made relatively large or long at the top whereby the heel and toe .parts can be moved relatively to 'each' other a comparatively large amount so as to permit aneasy and ready removal of the last from the shoe when desired.
In the present construction the toe and heel parts of the last are attached to each other.by a link having one end attached to the toe part and the other end attached to the heel part, this link maintaining a spring contained within the toe part under compression, so that the last will be held either in extended. or broken position as may be desired, this. spring preventing relative displacement of the toe and heel parts'so that when the last is broken the transverse bearing with which the last is provided may not drop out. f
In Patent No, 1,295,273, dated February 25, 1919, there is shown a last having a toe part and aheel part provided with main bearing members or pins between-said parts and about which the parts are adapted to be given a partial rotation ,and'a link pivotally connected at one end to the toe part and at the other end to the heel part, this link cooperating with a spring, one end of which is attached to the'toe part and the other end to the heel part for maintaining the two parts of the last in either extended position or broken position as the case may be.
The present invention contemplates the employment of a last construction similar to that just referred to. In the present con struction, however, the spring is mounted wholly within the toe part of the last and maintained under compression by the link referred to at all times.
With a construction such as shown herein the V portion of the last can'be made comparatively large and the last parts will be maintained firmly together even when the partsoccupy the shortened or broken position relatively to each other. In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in part sectional elevation a last of the character above outlined with parts broken away to show the inner construction thereof, the last in this figure beingshown in extended po sition;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the last 1n broken position; and
, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken through Fig. 1, showing in full lines the bearing parts for the last and the link and pins by which the two portions of the last are held to each other.
The last as a whole is designated A and comprises toeand heel parts'designated B and C respectively. In the formation of the last these two parts may be made integrally with each other from-the saine piece of wood constituting a transverse bearing for the toe and heel parts B and O.
The toe part B of the last is provided with a slot 1 and the heel part is provided with a slot 2 for the reception of a link 3, the rear end of the link being provided with a hole through which passesua' pin 4 to maintain this end of the link pivotally conected to the heel part of the last. The forward end of the link' is provided with a slot 5 through which asses a pin 6 whereby this end of the link wi 1 be secured to the toe part of the last,
the slot 5 providing a meansfor permitting the toe and heel parts B andLC respectively of the lastto be moved from the position shown-in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2.
From an inspection of Fig. 3 it will be noticed that the link 3 is positioned between the inner ends of the bearing members D and D. The forward end of the link 3 is provided with a projection 7, which together with a pin or stop 8 passing through the toe portion B of the last serves to maintain a spring 9 under compression at all times.
From an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be observed that when the last is in extended or unbroken position, a line passing through the centers of the pins 6 and 4 falls below the center of the main bearing pins D-D, and inasmuch as the spring 9 with the parts in this position is under compression, the toe and heel parts B and C respectively of the last will be maintained in full extended position and in firm engagement with the main bearing pins DD. As the last parts are moved from the unbroken position of Fig. 1 toward the broken position of Fig. 2 the link 3 moves to the left as viewed in Fig. 1, this movement being permitted by the slot 5 in the forward end of the link, but this movement is not sufficient to fully relieve the compression of the spring 9 with the result that with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2 with the spring 9 still under compression, and a line drawn from center to center of the pins 6 and 4: falling above the center line of the bearing pins 13-1), the last parts will be maintained in broken position and in firm engagement with the bearing members D-D.
It will therefore be seen that a last hasbeen provided which can be broken or flexed to the desired extent or maintained in extended position as the case may be and the parts of which last are held together by a link which cooperates with a spring provided in the toe part of the last and which spring being under compression at all times will assist in holding the last parts in either extended or broken position and alwaysbroken position and for preventing accidental dislodgment of the transverse bearmg.

A last having a toe part and a heel part provided with a transverse bearing, a link one end of which is connected by a pin to the toe part, and the other end connected to the heel part, the end of the link connected to the toe part being provided with a slot through which the said pin. passes, said slotted end of the link being provided with a projection, a stop on said toe part and a spring under compression between said projection and stop to maintain the last parts in extended position and in broken position.
6. A last having a toe part and a heel,
part provided with a transverse bearing, a link connected to said toe and heel parts, a pin passing through a slot in one end of said link and serving to secure the link to one ofsaid parts, a projection on. said link,
a stop on one of said parts, and a spring under compression between said projection and said stop to maintain said toe and heel parts in extended and in broken position.
