STEPHEN M. HAMBLIN, 'OF STOUGHTON,MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO BAY STATE LAST COMPANY, OF STOUGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS, .A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
" Patented Feb. 4;, 1 908.;
T all whom iimay concern:
Be it known that I, STnPHEN M. HAMBLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk, State of 5 Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Lasts, of which the following is a specification}, reference be ing had therein to the accompanying .drawmgs. The invention has relation to divided or hinged lastsand forms, and'consi'sts in a last or form of this class, of improved and novel construction, which I will explain with reference to the drawings, in which latter,- Figurel is a view in side elevation of a last or form embodying the invention. Fig.2 is a view showing the same in longitudinal vertical-'section.
Having reference. to the drawings :The fore-part of the last or form shown therein is designated 1,, and 2 is the heel-part. The forepart is formed with the transverse socket 3, the shank extension 4 projecting rearwardly from below thesaid socket, and the surface 5 constituting an extended bearing at the top of the .said extension. The heel-part 2 is formed with 'a forwardly-projecting extension having the integral'roll 5 at the'forward endthe'reof, the neck 6 behind such roll, and the surface 7 constituting an extended bear- ,ing at the under side of the said extension. The roll 3 is cylindrical in cross-section, ex-
cept, of course, at its juncture with the neck, and the socket 5 ,is similarly shaped. The
said socket incloses more than one-half of the circumference of the roll, the remaining portion oi such circumference being sufficient to; permit the required extent oi -swinging movement of the two members with relation 40 to each other; I The fore-part and heel-part constitute, primarily, integral portions of the same piece or block, the latter having given to it the required external shape of the last or form to be produced- They are divided from each other, by means of a thin savo along the line a, b, Fig; 1, the out extending transversely through the thickness 'of the piece or block and enabling the two members to be separated fronieach other.
' f The members having been separated, as by a tIiLDSVGISGTflOVBIXIGIlt, a hole 8, Fig. 2, is made, through the roll 8 and neck 6, at or near midwidth of the last or form, and a notch or hearing 7 rests fair groove 9 is made in the front side fof the roll. The parts then are fitted together again, and
are subjected tov pressure-within .a clamp,
whereby the upper side of the socket is closed down upon the top of the roll. While held in a this condition, holes are'ibored through the '80 last orform, and-the pins ordOWGlS-IOQIIJ are driven tightly into such holes and seemed in place in the fore-part. Dowel 1-1 stmsto holdthe top and bottom ofthesocketfclosed, firmly uponthe roll. The twodowels pre-f 5 vent 'the fore-part from splitting atthe socket.- In addition, by their engagement with the roll they prevent lateral displacement of the fore-part and rearepart with relation to each other.
The bearin 5' is tangential with relation to the cylindrical wallof the socket and uni form, or substantially so; that is tosay, it has no abrupt changing of direction or angles. Bearing 7 is tangential with relation to the cylindrical exterior of the roll,and also uni-. form, or substantially so. Consequently, all of the roll is above the said bearings, and. the underside of' the neck is in direct line with the underside of the roll. When the fore-part and heelart are ut together, the
l y'upon the bearing 5, and all of the iooseness or play between the exterior of the roll and'the interior of the socket locates itseif at the top of the roll. When,
- now, the-pressure isapplied, the constituted by the extreme rear end of instepv portion is' sprung thereby downward and rearWa-rdly around the roll so as to close the socket upon the latter. The socket is held by means of the dowel 11 in closed condition, clasping the roll with any desired degree of pressure, so as to secure the required amount of friction to prevent the two parts of the last or form from moving too easily upon each'other. r 1
By making the roll 5 integral with they neck 6 of the forward extensionof the heelpart, greater strength and durability are secured than would be if the roll was formed as' a separate piece and fastened to the said neck. i
What is claimed as the invention is,-
in a divided or hinged last or form, in combination, the heel-part constructed with the 10.) forward extension formed with the inte ral roll and the uniform bearing tangentia tothe said roll the fore-pertconstructed with and. holding the socket contracted upon the roll. n 10 In testimony whereof I a'llix my signature in presence of two. Witnesses.
S'llCPl-iEN .M, HAMBLIN.
