Be it known that I, GEORGE G. PATTER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the county oi Liberty and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Litters for Automobiles. OTE which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve removers, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device for compressing a spring of the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine and to permit the convenient and quick removal of the valve for regrinding and the like.
Another obj ect of the invention is the pro vision of an improved device for simultaneously compressing the springs of the intake and exhaust vaives of a plurality of cylinders at one operation, thereby eliminating the necessity of removing or compressing these springs one at a time.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool for compressing the springs of the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine, which is so constructed that after the springs have been compressed the same are held in their contracted position, thereby permitting the removal of the valves and stems without dis placing the springs or seats.
A still further object of the invention is the provision-of an improved device of the above character which is durable and etficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:

tion through the improved device showing the manner of securing the operating cams thereto.
Referring to the drawings, in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates a gasolene motor or internal combustion engine of a common type, and includes the valve stems 10 normally pressed downwardly by compressing springs 11 to hold the valves to their seats. The springs 11 at their upper ends engage with the valve casing or other rigid part oi the engine, while at their lower ends they rest upon valve spring seats 12 which are formed dish shaped, so as to prevent displacement of the springs there from. The spring seats 12 are slidably mounted on the valve 11 in the ordinary manner, and are limited in their downward movement by a transverse pin 13, and the spring seats 12 hearing against these pins firmly hold the valve on its seat (not shown). The valve lifting rods 1% extend upwardly through the cylindrical sleeve 15. formed in the valve casing in alinement with the valve stem, and the rods are raised and lowered in the ordinary manner by the am shaft 16. An upwardly extending lip or flange 17 is formed on the casing of the motor in the usual manner.
AS stated, the engine as shown forms no part of the invention, but is merely shown to facilitate the understanding of the improved valve spring compressor B, which includes the spring engaging plate C and the operating means D.
The spring engaging member 0 of the improved device B includes a substantially rectangular flat base plate 18 provided at equi-distantly spaced points with relatively large circular apertures 19, which have one side thereof opening out through the inner longitudinal edge of the plate 18. The Wall of each opening is provided adjacent its lower ends wit-h an inwardly extending flange 20,which forms a seat or rest for the spring seat 12. The walls of the openings are curved as at 21, so as to conform to the configuration of the dish shaped spring seats 12. The passage connecting the openings with the inner longitudinal edge of the plate 18 is formed relatively small, so as to form restricted necks or entrances to the openings, so as to prevent lateral movement of the plate 18 in relation to the spring seats 12,
. moval of when the plate 18 is placed in operative position, for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully described. The lower surface oi. the plate 18 is provided adjacent its ends, with pairs of depending ears or bearing brackets 22, which are riveted or otherwise secured, as at 23, to the lower surface of the plate.
The operating means D include a pairof operating cams 24:, having outwardly extending levers 25, the lower terminals of which are bent inwardly at right angles to provide handles 26, to permit the conyenient operation of the cams. The upper terminals of the cams directly opposite to the operating levers 25 are positioned between the ears or hearing brackets 22 and pivotally connected thereto by means of pivot pins 26. The lower faces of the cams 24- adjacent to the lever 25 are each provided with an inwardly extending notch 28 which is adapted to engage the rib or flange formed on the motor casing for a purpose which will here matter-more fully appear.
*ln operation of the improved device, the plate 18 is forced inwardly into engagement with the valve stems 10, and under the spring seats 12, which fit into the openings 19 and rest upon the flange 21. Owing to the shape of the opening 18 and the spring seat 12,
relative lateral movement of the plate 18 is prevented. After the plate is placed in position on the valve stems and in engagement with the spring seats, the operatinglevers 25 are thrown downwardly, which owing to the shape of the cams 24 raises the plate 18 in a vertical plane and compresses the springs 11. Nhen the levers 25 have been moved to their extreme downward position, the flange or rib 17 on the casingioi the mo tor will ride into the notch 28 and frictionally engage thewalls thereofand prevent accidental upward movement of the lever, thereby locking the lever in its adjusted lowered position and the springs 11 compressed. The pins 14 are then removed from the valvestems, which p rmits the removal of thevalvc in the ordinary manner. From the foregoing description it can be seen that an approved device is provided for quickly andreadilysupporting a plurality of valve springs for permitting the convenient rethe valve for regrinding and the like.
