- H.B.CARTUDGE VALVE LIFTER FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION MOTORS Filed Sept. 28. 1921 Patented Oct. 30, 1923.
HARRY B. OARTLIDGE, OF OREGON CITY, OREGON.
VALVE LIFTER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTORS.
Application filed September 28. 1921. Serial No. 503,726.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. (himn'non, a citizen of the limited States, residing at Oregon City, county of (llackamas, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Litters for Internal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valve litters in general, and particularly to such litters as are used upon internal combustion motors of certain types for lifting the valves and holding the valve springs and washers in place while grinding the valves.
The object of my invention is to provide such a device that is easily applied to the motor, easily operable to compress the valve spring, applicable to several valves simultaneously, and adapted to remain in place supporting the several valve springs while the valves are being ground.
I accomplish the above object by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application tor Letters Patent, like characters of reference indicatin like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a. perspective view of the operating cam.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation of an internal combustion motor with my device in place thereon.
in general my device consists of a notched plate, the notches in which are adapted to allow of the plate being slipped upon several valve stems simultaneously beneath the spring washers thereon, a member adapted to be seated upon the bottom of the valve spring chamber of the motor, and camlike means for separating said plate and said member to compress the several valve springs and to hold the same so compressed While the valves are being ground.
The plate 4 is provided with suitable notches 5 in one edge thereof. said notches being so spaced as to fit over several valve stems of the motor. Said plate is also provided with an inverted U shaped central portion 6 adapted to fit over the stud 7 of the motor which stud holds the spring chamber cover in place. A member 8 is provided beneath the plate 4. said member being provided with feet suitable for contacting with the bottom 9 and lip 10 of the valve spring chamber of the motor. The feet 11 contact with said bottom 9, as shown in Fig.3, while the feet 12 are adapted to contact with the lip 10 and are provided with lugs 13 adapted to engage said lip and thus to prevent the device from slipping out of place while in use.
Secured to the plate 4 are dowels 14 which are slidably mounted within orifices therefor in the member 8, thus mountin the plate 4; upon the member 8 in a vertical y slidable aliued manner.
A camlike member 15 is journaled upon the member 8 and is adapted to raise the plate 4 and to hold said plate so raised.
in operation my device is placed within the spring chamber of the motor with each valve stem contained within its respective orifice or notch 5 and with the plate 4 benca :h the valve spring washers, shown in Fig. 3. \Vhen so placing the device the two cauilikc members 15 are placed in the posilion shown in dotted lines at 15 in Fig. 1, resting upon lugs 16 provided therefor, thus allowing the plate 4. to rest upon the member 8. Vhen the device is in place the two camlike members 15 are rotated by means of their respective levers 15 thus raising the plate l into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. and compressing the springs of the several valves. Said camlike members will then hold the scverzl springs compressed, and the valve stem pins may be easily removed and the valves ground in the usual manner. \Vhen the several valves have been ground and the valve stem pins replaced the device may be removed. thus allowing the washers to again be seated upon the pins.
lViy device may be made of any size, and constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in ma.- terializing my invention, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a valve lift-er: a plate having notches therein adapted to embrace valve stems beneath the valve stem springs, and
having a depressed central portion adapted to receive a stud; a plate substanially parallel to said notched plate; feet upon said latter plate adapted to contact with the bottom of the valve spring chamber; dowels secured to said notched plate and slidable within orifices in said parallel plate; and cams mounted upon said parallel plate and coactinp with said notched plate.
2; n a valve lifter: relatively slidably connected parallel plates adapted to be inserted beneath the valve springs of a plurality of valve stems, one of said plates being notched to receive said valve stems, and the other of said plates being adapted to contact with the bottom of the valve spring chamber; and cams upon one 01. said plates adapted to separate said plates.
3. A plate having therein notches adapted to embrace valve stems beneath the valve stem springs; a second plate parallel to said notched plate adapted to be seated Within the chamber of said valve stems; feet upon said second plate for securing the latter in place; slidable guides connecting said notched plate and said second plate; and earns mounted upon said second plate for separating said plates.
4. In a valve lifter: a pair of parallel plates, one adapted to engage a plurality of valve stems and the other adapted to con tact with the bottom of the valve spring chamber; guides between said plates to C()1lstrain them to a relatively parallel motion; and cams between said plates to cause them to separate.
In Witness whereof I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, this 22nd day of Sept. 1921.
