VALVE-SPRING (.lOlllIPlEEiESSOlEt.k
Applieation filed May 5, 1921. serial No. 467,165.
To all whom z'z may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED BRUNO Sure MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing; at Lake Crystal, in the county of Blue lilarth, State of Minnesota, have in vented a new and useful Valve-Spring;` Uompressor; and l do hereby declare the follow,- ing` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. .y
The invention relates to valve spring compressors and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is disposed on a bench and so constructed that a cylinder head may be disposed adjacent the same, and the valve springs carried thereby easily compressed, thereby lallowing the cotter pin and valve stem to be easily removed and the valve disassembled.
A further object is to provide a valve spring compressor for benches, which compressor comprises a horizontally disposed rod carried by the bench on which rod is lonnitudinally movable a clevis which may swing vertically, said clevis having pivoted thereto a yoke which may swing 1n a horizontal plane, 'thereby in connection with the clevis forming a traveler having a universal movement, slidably mounted in the yoke and operating; lever which operating; lever is provided with a downwardly extending valve stem washer engaging arm.l which may be positioned in various positions for forcing downwardly a washer of the valve stem and compressing;i the valve spring.
A further object is to provide means whereby the valve spring compressor may be utilized for stretching the spring, thereby restoring the tension necessary in the spring.
With the above and other objects in View the invention resides inthe combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being` understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawingst- Figure l is a front elevation of the valve spring compressor.
Figure 2 is a top plan View'.
y Figure 3 is a detail perspective view showing the device used as a valve spring stretcher.
Referringr to' the drawings, the numeral l designates a portion of a work bench and 2 a cylinder head ofthe type wherein the valvesirare carried. by the cylinder head. Extendingl upwardly from the bench l and secured thereto is a U-shaped bracket 3, which bracket supports and forms a traveler y for the valve stem compressor hereinafter set forth. y
Slidably mounted on the horizontal portion 3 of the Ushaped bracket 3 is a clevis 4, which clevis pivots in a vertical plane as well as moves longitudinallyA on the portion 3a of the bracket 3. lDivotally connected at `5 to the clevis 4land adapted to swing in a horizontal plane is a guide yoke 6, in which yoke is slidably mounted the end 7 oit an operating lever 8. lt will be seen that the operating lever is universally supported to any position desired for positioning' the downwardly extending arm 9, which is securet to the operating lever by means of a bolt l0 over any particular valve of the cylinder head 2 without removing; the cylinder head from its position on the bench l, or moving the cylinder head 2 to a particular position for positioning the valve stem ll, which would be necessary if the operating lever 8 were not slidably mounted in a men ber which has longitudinal movement and a universal movement.
The lower end of the downwardly entending arm 9 terminates in a horizontally disposed bifurcated member l2, the arms of which portion are adapted to be disposed on the upper surface of the washer 13 in such a manner that when said washer is forced downwardly for compressing the valve spring 14, the cotter key l5 will pass upwardly through the bifurcation to a point where it can be easily and quickly removed with any suitable tool. lt will be seen that the valve springs may be quickly compressed and the valve disassembled and the danger of bending the valve stem 11 which is common where the valve is disassembled by ordinary tools.
After the valve spring 14 has been removed and it is found necessary to stretch the s ring for restoring its normal tension, the yevice may be utilized for this purpose.
To accomplish the stretching` operation the U-shaped spring holder l5a is removed from the downwardly extending' bracket '16 and is placed through 'the aperture Tfr' in the operating` lever 8 with its hooked arm extend ing' downwardly. `The arnispl o'tvthe U'- sha-ped member l5 are then 4forced into the end oit the coiled spring' 4l untiltheir hooks 19 engage over receive the upper convo lution ot the spring. iter'the upper end the spring` has beenmsecured, the lower end oit ythe spring is similarly connected to a similarlyshaped lai-shaped spring` clamp Q0, carried bythe bracket 16. Spring ,holding member l5 and 2O being of the same construction the same numerals apply thereto. .fitter the spring' le is so positioned and held, it will be seen that upon an upward Vmovement of the lever 8 that the spring will be stretched in such a manner that its tension maybe restored. 4
From the above. it will be seen that .a valve springv compressor is provided, which compressor is particularly `adapted for use in connection with benches whereon the entire cylinder head or' an internal combustion engine is disposedfer repairirur` and overvhauling or assembling` the valve carried by said cylinder head. lt will also be seen that it will not be necessary to accurately dispose the cylinder4 head in relation to the device, it being only necessary to place the cylinder head adjacent the device and after which any i eener of the valve stems may be quickly reached by the horizontal portion l2 or the arm 9. R The invention having been set "forth what is claimed as new and useful is l. A valve spring compressor comprising` a supporting bracket, said bracket havinp`l` slidably and rockably mounted thereon a clevis., a yoke horizontally pivoted on said clevis, an operating` lever slidably mounted in said yoke and a downwardly extending valve spring` engaging arm carried by said lever.
A valve spring compressor comprising;` a supporting` brackeh a slidable member elirlably mounted lon said bracket and rockably mounted thereon, ayoke carried by said slidable and rockable member and horizon- Vtally pivoted to said member, an operating lever slidably mounted in said yoke, a downwardly extending arm carried by said operating lever and a valve stern washer engaging member carrie-d by Said downwardly eX- tending armand adapted to engage a washer 'for forcing the same downwardly and compressing a valve spring.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specilcationin the presence ol two subscribing witnesses. y
