STAY BOLT STRUCTURE. APPLICATION FILED MAY3.1918.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.

Specification of Letters Patent.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented lFeb. 4t, 1919.
Application filed May 3. 1918. Serial No. 232,306.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that we, JOHN Rooms FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. DoDDs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain tnew and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following .to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for connecting a double-headed bolt with the boiler sheets,-the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby the testing of the staybolt may be facilitated by affording quick access to its inner threaded end.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the application of our improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 an inner boiler sheet. A bearing sleeve 3 may be passed through or otherwise secured to the outer boiler sheet 1 and provided interiorly with a curved face 4 affording a bearing for a rounded or spherical head 5 at the outer end of a staybolt6. The sleeve 3 is closed by a cap 7, the latter being so disposed as to aiford a suitable clearance 8 for the head 5 of the bolt,-said ca having segmental shoulders 7 to under ie segmental shoulders 7 c on the sleeve 3.
A bearing sleeve or member 7 is screwed through the inner boiler sheet 2 and provided interiorly with a curved face 9 which affords a bearing for a head 10 on the inner end of the staybolt 6. This head 10 is preferably made separate from the body of the bolt and provided with a threaded socket to receive tijhri, threaded inner end of the body of the A removable cap 11 is disposed within the sleeve 7 a and made with a curved or dished inner face 12 which conforms to the contour of the head 10 and approaches the same closely but has not'such engagement with said head as to interfere with the movements of the latter. In order that the cap 11 shall be maintained in proper relation to the head 10 and also tightly close the hearing sleeve 7, the latter is provided with an internal seat 13 on which said cap has a bearing.
The cap 11 is provided with segmental shoulders 14: adapted to move under or behind segmental shoulders 15 in the sleeve 7 and these segmental shoulders are preferably made with co-acting cam faces so that the cap will be pressed tightly against the seat 13 in the sleeve 7.
By turning the cap 11 until its segmental shoulders 14 shall have moved out of line with the segmental shoulders 15 of the sleeve 7, said cap can be removed and the operator, by application of a suitable tool to the head 10, can test the staybolt to determine whether it is whole or broken.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is:
In a staybolt structure, the combination of a staybolt having heads at both ends, a bearing member for connecting one of said heads with an outer boiler sheet, a bearing member for connecting the other head of the bolt with an inner boiler sheet, said last mentioned bearing member having internal segmental shoulders, a cap entering said last mentioned bearing member and seated therein, said cap recessed to conform to and closely embrace the end portion of the head at the inner end of the bolt, and segmental shoulders on said cap to cooperate with the segmental shoulders in said last mentioned bearing member to normally look said cap in place.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY. ETHAN I. DODDS.
