ETHAN I. DODDS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
srAYnoLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN IQDODDS, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to the link type of flexible staybolts for boilers,-the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby flexible staybolts of the type specified may be quickly tested.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 is a View of a modification.
1 represents a bushing adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a conical oritapering bearin face 2 for the accommodation of an en member or head portion 3 of a staybolt. This head or endmember 3 is made conical or tapering exteriorly and is provided at its inner end with an eye 4 to receive an eye or loop 5 at one end of the body portion 6 of the bolt,-the parts 3 and 6 being thus loosely and flexibly connected together. The body portion 6 of the bolt is made in the form of a bar or link which may be threaded at one end, as shown at 7 to engage one of the boiler sheets.
The outer end of the head portion 3 of the staybolt is provided with an angular socket 8 to receive a wrench for facilitating the turning of said head 3 to determine whether the bolt has been broken. The socketed end of the head. or member 3 is covered by a removable cap 9. This cap is made with a bearing face 10 to seat against the bushing 1. and it is also provided with lateral segmental shoulders 11 (preferably having outer cam faces) to engage behind similar segmental shoulders 12 projecting inwardly from the outer end portion of the bushing 1. Thus the cap 9 will be held normally in place and to facilitate turning thereof, said ca may be made with a Wrench socket 13.
Vhen it is desired to test the bolt the op erator will turn the cap 9 until the segmental shoulders 11 shall. have moved out of line with the segmental shoulders 12 and then, after removing said cap, he will apply a wrench to the head member 3 of the bolt and, by turning the same, determine whether the bolt is whole or broken.
In the form ofthe invention shown in Fig. 3, the cap 9 is made with an angular portion .14; to receive a wrench andinstead of providing the head member 3 of the bolt with an angular socket to receive a wrench for turning said member 3, the latter may be provided with a threaded socket 15 to receive a threaded tool, with the use of which the operator may attempt to move the bolt longitudinally for determining whether it has been broken.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member provided with a tapering opening the wall of which is straight longitudinally of said member, of a tapering head seated on the wall of said tapering opening, a bolt body loosely connected with said head, and a closure having interlocking connection with the bearing member over said tapering head.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and having a conical interior bearing face, said face being straight longitudinally of said head, of a flexible staybolt comprising head and link members loosely connected together, said head member having a conical portion conforming to and seated in the conical interior of the bearing member and provided with a wrench engaging part, and a removable closure covering said head member of the bolt and having interlocking relation with the bearing member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
