Be it known that I, LOY H. lVALn-ion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Battery-Card Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved card holder, being particularly designed for use in holding the identification cards of storage batteries whereby the card of each battery may not become separated therefrom.
The invention has as one of its principal objects to provide a holder which may be readily connected to the handle of substantially any conventional type of storage battery and which will be adapted to firmly support a card thereon in such position that a view of the card may be easily had.
The invention hasas a further object to provide a device so constructed that a card cannot easily become displaced therefrom.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a device which will be structurally simple and which may be economically produced.

In carrying the invention into efiect, I employ an attaching clamp which is formed of companion members 10 and 11 respectively, the lower end portions of these members providing coacting jaws 12. Pivotally connecting these members is a spring 13. The spring iscoiled intermediate of its ends and the members are mounted to rock upon the coil. From one end of the coil extends a spring arm 14 provided with a laterally directed terminal 15 seating within a transverse channel in the outer face of the jaw of the member 10. From the opposite end of the coil extends a spring arm 16 provided with a laterally directed terminal 17 seating within a transverse channel in the outer face of the jaw of the member 11. Thus, the spring will act to normally clamp the jaws together while by shifting the upper ends of the members toward each other,

the jaws may be readily separated. The clamp carries a body plate 18. This plate is preferably formed of suitable sheet metal and is oblong in general contour. At its upper margin, the plate is notched in medially to define a lug 19 which is bent over rearwardly about the upper end of the member 10 of the clamp. A second notch is formed in the lower margin of the plate opposite to the first notch to provide a lug 20 which is bent rearwardly about the terminal 15 of the spring arm 14, the lug being curved to seat within the channel of said terminal. Thus, the body plate and clamp are rigidly connected. Secured to the lower margin of the body plate at its rear side are spring arms 21 arranged at opposite sides of the plane of the clamp. These spring arms are bent about the lower edge of the plate and thence extend upwardly to normally engage at their free end portions with the front face of the plate. As shown in the drawings, a. length of suitable resilient wire may be employed in forming each of the spring arms, said length of wire being bent to provide spaced parallel strands soldered or otherwise secured at their ends to the rear face of the plate, the strands being looped about the lower edge of the plate.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 have shown my improved card holder in use upon a conventional type of storage battery 22. As is usual, this battery is provided at its ends with upstanding handles 23. In using my improved device a card, as conventionally shown at 24:, is first engaged with the holder, the card being rested against the body plate 18 and held by the spring arms 21. The holder may then, as shown'in this figure, be connected to the battery by simply engaging the jaws of the attachingclamp with one of the battery handles. The holder will thus upstand from said handle of the battery to support the card in such position that a view thereof may be easily obtained. The card, of course, carries suitable data identifying the battery. Consequently, at any place, such as a repair shop where a large number of batteries are brought together, a particular battery may be easily located. Furthermore, it will be seen that the spring arms of the holder will support the identifying card thereon in such manner that the card cannot easily become displaced from the holder while the attaching clamp will, in turn, firmly connect the holder with the battery. Possibility of the loss of the identity of the battery will thus 'be reduced to a minimum. After the identifying card for a battery has served its purpose, the card may be readily slipped from the holder and the holder detached from the battery. I accordingly provide a particularly eiiective device for the purpose set forth and, as will now be appreciated in View of the preceding description, a device which is, at the same time, of particularIlIy simple construction.
aving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, an attaching clamp including companion clamp members, a spring actuating the members, a body plate secured to one of said members and to said spring, and card holding means carried by the plate.
2. In a device of the character described, an attaching clamp including companion clamp members providing jaws, a spring pivotally connecting said members and acting tonormally hold the jaws together, a body plate provided with lugs engaged one with one of said members and the other with said spring for connecting the plate to the clamp, and card holding means carried by the plate.
3. In a device of the character described, an attaching clamp including companion clamp members providing jaws, a spring pivotally connecting said members and having spring arms provided with terminals engaging said jaws whereby to normally hold the jaws together, a body plate having spaced lugs formed therefrom, one of said lugs being engaged with the upper end of one of said members and the other of said lugs being engaged with the terminal of one of said spring arms for connecting the body plate to the clamp, and card holding means carried by the plate. 4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body plate, a clamp secured against one side of the plate and including coacting pivoted spring pressed clamp members one fixed to the plate and the other tree for pivotal movement, and a spring arm fixed to the plate and resiliently bearing against the oppositeside thereof.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body plate having spaced rearwardly directed lugs formed therefrom, coacting clamp members one seated against the'rear side of said plate and engaged at its upper end beneath one of said lugs, and a spring 'pivotally connecting said members to form an attaching clamp and actuating the members, the spring being engaged by the other of said lugs whereby to connect the clamp to the body. plate.
