Description
Patented May 20, 1941 UNITED STTES TOBACCO CAN ATTACHMENT Walter F. Knox, Montrose, S. Dak.
Application August 15, 1939, Serial No. 290,246
Claims. (c1. arc-4s) This invention relates to tobacco can attachments, and the primary object thereof is to provide an attachment which can be readily applied to, and removed from a tobacco can, and reapplied to a fresh can upon emptying of the original can, and which sustains a package of cigarette papers, and also a match book, for easy and convenient access, and which also provides for display of an advertisement.
Further, the invention aims to provide an attachment of this character, which is of simple and economical construction, devoid of movable parts, and which can be produced from a single length of wire.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the invention applied to a tobacco can;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention,
detached from the can, and on a reduced scale. I
A single length of wire, preferably having spring properties, is employed and fashioned to provide a pair of spaced vertical and parallel outer legs I, the upper ends of which are bent to form a pair of loops 2, which engage the front and side edges of package P of cigarette papers. The loops are continued downwardly to provide an inner pair of spaced parallel legs 3, which are formed of the ends of the wire, and are engaged with the rolled over sides 4 of a metal panel 5, to which advertising matter may be applied, as shown in Fig. 1. The panel is thus supported by the legs and acts to press the package of papers P towards the front face of a tobacco can 0.
A match book M is readily inserted between the front face of the can and the rear face of the paper package P, and is likewise readily removable, by virtue of the yieldable support of the paper package by the attachment.
The legs I are extended outwardly at 6 and bent to form curved jaws 1 which engage over the front, rear and curved sides of the can, and are connected to a central rear jaw 8, through loops 9. Thus the jaws 1 and 8 press against the sides and back respectively of the can and firmly support the attachment in place, while sliding tendency of the attachment relative to the can.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the invention provides a most simple and economical structure, which is readily clamped onto the can and removable therefrom by virtue of the spring action of the clamping jaws, and hence indefinitely reuseable. Due to provision for advertising space, the attachment lends itself to free distribution by advertisers, or sale by the latter at a low attractive price, covering manufacturing costs.
What is claimed is:
1. A tobacco can attachment composed of a spring member having a cigarette paper package holder to yieldably hold the package and. to provide for the insertion of a match book between the package and the front of the can, curved snap spring side jaws connected to the holder and engaged over the front, rear and sides of the can to removably support the attachment on the can, said spring member having a pair of spaced legs, and a panel having its sides provided with rolled portions receiving the legs therein.
2. A tobacco can attachment, including a vertically disposed member formed to overlie one of the faces of the can, and means to removably attach said member to the can, composed of spring jaws connected to the vertical member and formed to snap into and out of engagement with the front, rear, and sides of the can, said member being yieldable and having its upper end freely movable toward and away from said face of the can whereby to enable a package of cigarette papers to be removably held by said member against the said face of the can.
3. A tobacco can attachment in accordance with claim 2, wherein the vertically disposed member has spaced vertical legs, and wherein the jaws are connected to the lower ends of the legs.
4. A tobacco can attachment in accordance with claim 2, wherein all of the parts are made of spring wire; wherein the vertically disposed member has spaced vertical legs and wherein the jaws are connected to the lower ends of the legs.
5. A tobacco can attachment in accordance with claim 2, wherein the vertically disposed member has portions for engagement with each of the side edges of the cigarette paper package.
6. A tobacco can attachment formed of a length of spring wire having its ends arranged in spaced relation, a panel between the legs having its sides formed with rolled portions embracing the legs, to engage and hold a package of cigarette papers against the front of a tobacco can, the wire at the upper ends of the legs being formed with loops which are engageable with the front and side edges of the package of cigarette papers and further formed with other legs which extend downwardly from the loops and have their lower ends formed with curved connected side jaws which latter are engageable with the front, rear and sides of the can.
7. A tobacco can attachment in accordance with claim 6, wherein the part of the wire which connects the jaws is formed with a rear jaw which is engageable with and against the rear face of the can.
8. A tobacco can attachment in accordance with claim 6, wherein the part of the wire which connects the jaws is formed with a rear jaw which is engageable with and against the rear face of the can and wherein the jaws are engageable with the beading of the can bottom, and wherein there are loops between the rear jaw and the side jaws, and which loops are also engageable with the beading of the can.
9. A tobacco can attachment formed of a length of spring wire having its ends arranged in spaced relation, to engage and hold a package of cigarette papers against the front of a tobacco can, the wire at the upper ends of the legs being formed with loops which are engageable with the front and side edges of the package of cigarette papers and further formed with other legs which extend downwardly from the loops and have their lower ends formed with curved connected side jaws which latter are engageable with the front, rear and sides of the y can.
