Patented June 10, 192
RICHARD, J'. KRAU'IHEIM, F NEWARK, I\T JERSEY.
SALES-CHECK HOLDING AND UNCHING DEVICE;
Application filed. July 19,
To c/ZZ Ur/t0? it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. KnAU'r- HEIM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Sales- C'heclr Holding and Punching Devices, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved ticket or check holder and punch which are adapted to be worn and used as a unitary device, and which can be assembled in different relations to suit the individual preference of the users, all of which relative arrangements, however, permit a ready removal and subsequent punching of the check with but little change-in the positionof the hands.
The invention relates to a device oftliis kind in which a conventional style of punch and a casing or holder for sales checks are combined, so that thetaces of the checks in the holder and the sight opening in the punch iace upward, and coacting-ineans are provided on the punch aiidon the holder so that the punch can be det-acliably secured to the holder. which not only provides for different positions ofthe punch on the holder, but permits-the replacement of one punch by another it the die isto be changed or if repairs are necessary to the punch, the holder in the meantime remaining in use with a different punch.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a sales check holder and a punch v combined according to my invention. Figure 2 is a front view of the device shown in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a vertical section on line 33 in Figure 2, with the means for attaching the holder to a .belt being shown in elevation. Figure 4 is a perspective view of one form of clip for attaching the punch to the holder. Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of clip, and Figure 6 is a fragmentary View showing how the clip shown in Figure 5 is used in the holder.
The holder has a main portion 10 which is box-like, having a closed bottom and top, sides and back, but with an open front to permit the projection of the stubs 11 of the series or pad of sales checks 12, these sales checks being composed of the stubs 11 and the detachable ends 12, the ends 12 be- 1921. Serial No. 485,814.
ing supported on a bottom plate '13 which projects out a material distance from the open end, of the casing and forms part thereof. 1
The device can be attached-to a belt 01' other supporting medium, the form shown comprising a clamp 14: pivoted to one side of the casing, as at 15, and normally compressed by a spring 16 so that its gripping end, usually provided with teeth 17, will securely clamp the device to the belt. The stubs 11 otthe sales checks are held down by a suitable pressing or sealing means, in the form shown this comprising a screw 18 screwing in the lugv or thimble 19 and=having an end 20 adapted to be operated by a suitablekey, the lower end thereof being headed to loosely confine a 'presser plate 21 which, when :t'orced down on the stubs, prevents .a slipping out under the tension causedby the tearing of the free ends 12 of :the sales checks from the stubs.
The punch 22 is made, as usual, with pivoted jaws, one jaw, which I will call the .fixed aw 23, having a slit 21 to receive sales checks, the swinging jaw 25 having adie on its end which passes through the :female part 26 of the die to cut a pertoration in the check. The top 'partof the fixed jaw,
through which the swinging aw moves, is provided with a sight opening 27, this being "formed-by a main opening 28'whicli receives .the die 29 of the swinging aw, anda smaller extension recess 30'whiohpermitsia View of the sales check after it-is inserted, so that the number to be punched can be easily oriented over the opening 26.
Thejaws :have handles, the
under the influence ofthe'spri'ng 33.
The punch is adapted to be secured to various parts of the holder and is therefore detachable and attachable in its relation to the holder. One manner of accomplishing this is to provide the punch with openings 34 in one of the handle portions, such as the handle 31, these openings receiving the screws 35. The bottom plate 13 has openings 36 which are spaced apart to fit the openings in the handle, so that the punch can be secured in position as shown in dotted outline in Figures 1 and 2. In this position the ends of the jaws project a material dis-' fixed ja-wh inga handle 31 and the swingingawhaving' a handle 32, these'bemg, normally kept apart the punching die can be easily seen and the ticket or check easily and quickly positioned in the slit 242.
In order to hold the punch alongside the check holder I provide a clip which is adapted to be held at one end in the pad or stack of checks and at the other end to support the unch. One form of such clip comprises a plate 37 which is proportioned so that it fits inside the casing 10 and has a lip 38 extending upwardly therefrom, and this lip supports the arm 39 which extends laterally and is slightly off-set to the rear. The end of the arm 39 is provided with holes 4:0 which are also spaced apart to register with the openings 34 in the handle 31. Screws 35 can thus be used in this position to fasten the punch to the arm 39, the clip itself being held by reason of the plate 37 being slid in on top of the stack of sales checks so that when the pressing means, as typified by the screw 18, is applied, the clip is securely held in position.
A modified form of clip is shown in Figure 5, this clip consisting of the plate tl similar to the plate 37, which is connected directly with the transverse or laterally extending arm 4-2, the end of the arm 42 having openings d3 spaced apart as are the openings in the handle of the punch, this 'form of clip being adapted to be usedas shown in Figure 6, the plate 41 being adapted to be slid underneath the bottom sales check or to be interposed between checks in the stack, so that the height of the punch can be varied, if desired, to suit the convenience of the user.
I claim:
1. A sales check holding and punching device comprising a holder including a bottom plate and means for pressing stubs of checks in the holder, a punch and a clip secured to the punch and disposed so that the punch is supported alongside the holder when one end of the clip is held with the stubs between the bottom and said pressing means.
'2. A salescheck holding and punching de vice comprising a holder for sales checks, means for pressing the stubs of checks to lock them in the holder, a punch, a clip adapted to support the punch and having a plate to be gripped with the stubs in said pressing means.
3. A sales check holding and punching device comprising a holder for sales checks, means for pressing the stubs of checks to lock them in the holder, a punch, a clip comprising a plate to be placed with said stubs and to be gripped when the stubs are pressed, the clip including anarm to project to the side of said casing and being adapted to support the punch.
4r. A sales check holding and punching device comprising a holder for sales checks, means for pressing the stubs of checks to lock them in the holder, a punch, a clip comprising a plate to be placed with said stubs and to be gripped when the stubs are pressed, the clip including a vertical strip and an arm projecting laterally from the top of said strip and having means thereon for securing the punch thereto.
5. A sales check holding and punching device comprising a holder for a pad or" sales checks, said holder including a bottom plate, a clip comprising a plate to be assembled with the checks, means for pressing the checks and the plate to lock them in position, said clip having a projecting arm, and a punch having a handle adapted to cooperate with the arm or the bottom plate to secure the punch on the holder.
6. A sales check holding and punching device comprising a holder for a pad of sales checks, said holder including a bottom plate, a clip comprising a plate to be assembled with the checks, means for pressing the checks and the plate to lock them in position, said clip having a projecting arm, a punch having screw-threaded openings in the handle, the arm and the bottom plate having openings adapted to register with the openings in the handle, and screws adapted to pass through the openings and secure the handle to the arm or the bottom plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereto set my hand. this 18th day of July, 1921.
RICHARD J. KRAUTHEIM.
