Be it known that I, WILLARD IRVING.
TW'OMBLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air pumps in which the piston is actuated by foot power. It is the object of the invention to provide a pump of this type in which the cylinder is supported in a horizontal position, and the piston reciprocated by means operable by an upward and downward movement of the foot, and to provide a pump of this character which is simple and cheap in construction and efficient in operation.
Further objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a pump illustrating an embodiment of my invention.

Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughoutthe different views of the drawings.
The embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings comprises a cylinder 5 having standards 6 and 7 at opposite ends to support the same in a horizontal position, said cylinder being open at the rear end and closed at the forwardend by the standard 7. The end 7 has an outlet with an inward closing and outward opening check valve, and provided with means for the attachment of a hose or the'like. A trunk piston 8 is adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder, said piston having suitable packing clamped to the piston head, as at 9, and ports 10 in the head to serve as intake ports for the cylinder, the opening and closing of which ports is controlled by the pistonpacking.
The piston has laterally projecting trunnions 11 at a point between its ends adapt ed to extend through oppositely disposed openings or slots 12 in the side wall of the cylinder, whereby the piston has a bearing in the cylinder forwardly and rearwardly of said trunnions. Pivotally connected to said trunnions is a lever consisting of. a
pair of links 13, these links being preferably of obtuse angle shape, as shown, and connected by a rod or tube 1 1 at a point be tween their ends. Fixed to the free ends of said links to extend between the same is a member 15 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A pair of links 16 are pivotally connected at one end to the rod 1 1, and at the opposite ends pivotally connected in a fixed position to the standard 6, as by a rod 17 jonrnaled in said standard. It willbe noted that the links 13 and 16 constitute what might be termed a double toggle.
In operation the pump is placed on a suitable support, such as the floor, in a horizontal position, the pump being supported by the standards 6 and 7, the bottom of which are preferably provided with serrations or recesses, the parts being assumed to be in the position shown in Fig. 2. By placing the foot on the member 15, which is in the nature of a foot pedal, and exerting a downward pressure thereon in a direction transverse to, the movement of the piston, the links 13 will cause the links 13 and 16 to straighten out, and, as the one end of each of the links 16 is supported in a fixed position, the ends of the. links 13 connected to the piston will move forward and thereby move the piston into the cylinder and cause the air in front of the piston to unseatthe valve in the cylinder outlet and be ejected therethrough. The piston is returned under spring pressure in the present instance through the links 13 and 16 by a spring 22 coiled about the rod 14: with one end connected to one of the links 13, as at 18, and theother connected to one of the links 16, as at 19. During this return movement'of the piston, air will enter into the cylinder through the the position,
'To' retain the'pump parts in as shown in Fig. 2, when the pump is not in use, I provide a latch pivotally carried by the cylinder, in the present instance supported on the rod 17, and adapted to engage over a lug 21 projecting from the lever 13 adjacent to the foot piece 15.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a pump, the combination of a cylinder; a standard connected to and closing one end of the cylinder and having a discharge outlet for the cylinder with a valve opening outward from and closing into the cylinder; a standard connected to the opposite end of the cylinder with said end of piston ports.
7 the cylinder open; oppositely disposed slots in the cylinder; a trunk piston to reciprocate in the cylinder having laterally projecting trunnions to extend through the cylinder slots; packing carried by the piston to seal thepiston in the cylinder when the piston is moved in one direction and eject the air in front of the piston through the outlet in the closed cylinder end and permit entrance of air through the open end of the cylinder to in front of the piston-when the piston is moved in a reverse direction; a toggle pivotally connected at one end to the piston trunnions andthe other end pivotally connected to the standard at the open end of the cylinder, whereby downward pressure on said toggle will impart movement to the piston in one direction; and a spring operable to impart return movement to the piston, substantially as and for the purpose Specified. 7
2; An air pump, comprising in combination a cylinder; a standard connected to and closing one end of the cylinder and having an outlet with a valve opening outward from and closing into the cylinder; a-standardconnected to the opposite endot the cylinder with said end of the cylinder open; said standards being arranged to support the cylinder in a horizontal position; oppositely disposed slots in said cylinder; a trunk piston to reciprocatein the cylinder having laterally projecting trunnions at'a point between its [ends to extend through the cylinder slots; a toggle pivotally connected at one end to the piston trunnions and the other end pivotally connected'to the cylinder standard at the open end of the cylinder, whereby downward pressure on said toggle will move the piston into the,
cylinder; and a spring to retract the toggle and move theipiston out from the cylinder,
substantially as and for the purpose specified. I

An air pump comprising in combination a cylinder closed at one end; an outlet or he cylin er n i o d a p ing pair of levers pivotally connected at one end to the piston trunnions; a pair of links pivotally supported at the open end of the cylinder in a fixed position, and the opposite ends pivotally connected to the levers at a point between the ends of said levers, whereby a downward pressure applied to the tree ends of the levers will impart movement to the piston into the cylinder; and a spring to cooperate with said levers and links to return the piston, substantially as and in the manner set forth. p

A pump comprising in combination a cylinder closed at one end and having ,an outlet therein; standards to support the cylinder in a horizontal position; oppositely disposed slots in the cylinder; a trunk piston to reciprocate inthe cylinder having intake ports in the head to the cylinder, and trunnions projecting laterally. at a point between its ends to extend throughthe oyl vers at a pointbetween their ends; a pair oi linkspivotally supported at one end upon a cylinder standard and the other ends pivotally connected to the rodpassing through the levers whereby downward pressure on the free ends of thelevers will impart movement to thepiston into the oylinder; and a spring coiled about the bar extending through the levers with one end connected to a lever and the other end connected to one of the links to retract the levers and links and move the piston out from the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose 5. 6. An air pump comprising a cylinder arranged to be supported in a horizontal position at opposite ends and having an out lot at one end with an inwardly closing and outwardly opening check valve; a piston to reciprocate in said cylinder; a toggle joint pivotally connected at one end to a fixed part of the pump; means extending from the piston through the lateral wall of the cylinder,to which the other end of the toggle is pivotally connected whereby movement of the toggle toward the cylinder will impart movement to the piston in one direction; and a spring to impart return movement to the toggle and piston.
An air pump comprising a cylinder arranged to be supported in a horizontal position and having a valve controlled outlet; a piston to operate in said cylinder; toggle lever mechanisnnpivotally connected to a fixed part of the pump and with the piston through the wall of the cylinder, and whereby movement of the toggle lever, mechanism toward the cylinder will impart movement to the piston in one direction; and a spring to impart return movement to the toggle lever mechanism and piston.

An air pump comprising a cylinder having a valve controlled outlet at one end andarranged to be supported in a horizon tal position; reciprocable piston mechanism in the cylinder having means to extend through the lateral wall of the cylinder; and a toggle joint, one member of which is pivotally supported at one end from a fixed part of the pump, and the other member of the toggle pivotally connected to the part of the piston mechanism extending through the lateral wall of the cylinder, and said latter toggle member being extended beyond its pivotal connection with theother toggle member and having a pedal secured thereto for the purpose specified.
9. A foot operated tire inflating pump, comprising a cylinder closed at one end and having an outlet with a check valve closing into and opening outward from the cylinder and arranged to be supported at opposite ends of the cylinder in horizontal position; a piston to reciprocate in the cylinder; a toggle joint one member of which is pivotally connected to a fixed part and adjacent one end of the pump, and the other toggle member pivotally connected with the piston through the lateral wall of thecylinder, and said latter toggle member having a part extending beyond the pivotal connection of the toggle members with foot pedal secured adjacent the extremity thereof for the purpose specified.
10. A portable tire inflating pump, comprising a cylinder having a supporting member at opposite ends whereby the cylinder is arranged as the supporting frame of the pump; a piston to reciprocate in said cylinder; a lever pivotally attached at one end to the piston throughthe wall of the cylinder; a link pivotally connected at one end to the lever between its ends and at the other end to a supporting member of the cylinder for the purpose specified.
11. A portable tire inflating pump, comprising a cylinder arranged with a supporting member at opposite ends; a reciprocable piston in the cylinder; a lever to one end of which the piston is pivotally connected through the cylinder wall; a link pivotally connected at one end to the lever between its ends and at the other end pivotally connected to a fixed part of the pump, whereby as the lever is moved in one direction the piston is moved into the cylinder; and a spring to impart return movement to the lever and piston.
