AIR-PUMP.
emme.
To all whom it may concern: a
' Be it known that we, PARIS L. SAVAGE and HERBERT E. MORTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Pumps, of which the following is a specification. a i
This invention relateslto hand pumpsespecially adapted for use in connection with inflated automobile tires and the like and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient hand pump which may be very conveniently folded for the purpose of permitting the 8311116130 be carried within atool box without taking up a considerable amount of space and also without fear of injury to the delicate portions of the pump.
7 Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for inflating an automobile tire. which is provided with a means for determining the amount of pressure placed within the tire.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pump, certain portions being shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the tray of the pump, a portion of the body of the pump being shown in side elevation.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the pump cylinder which is provided with the usual reciprocating piston rod 2, the piston rod 2 carrying laterally extending handles 3. A frame 4 is formed upon the lower end of the pump cylinder 1 and this frame 4 comprises a substantially flat body merging into the pump cylinder upon the rear face thereof as shown in Figs. 2 and A nipple or elbow 5 is secured to the frame 4 and commu- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 15, 1918. SeriaINo. 234,734.
raceof the frame 4 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1. and 3 of the drawing. A pressure gage 15 is supported within the tray 10 as shown in Fig. 3 and this pressure gage 15 is connected to a suitable check valve 12, the check valve 12 being in turn connected to the flexible hose 6 by means of a suitable nipple 9. The air gage or pressure gage 15 is connected to a suitable pipe 18, which pipe 13 is connected to a flexible hose 16 at the outer end thereof for the purpose of permitting the same to be readily attached to a tire or other means to be inflated. The pipe 13 is provided with a bowed portion 14 extending around one side of the gage 15 as shown clearly in Fig. 2 and this bowed portion is connected to the gage for the purpose of supplying air thereto and permitting the presure of the air to be readily determined by the operator.
A suitable latch 20 is carried by the tray 10 and this latch 20 is adapted to fit in the notch formed in the securing means 21 carriedupon the upper end of the frame 4, in this way facilitating the holding of the tray 10 in a closed position upon the frame.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient means has been produced for the purpose of permitting the gage of the pump to be folded within the frame 4 and hold the same against injury while the pump is placed in the tool box or other place of storage. I It should be further understood that the device illustrated is very cheap in construction and can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
It of course should be understood that certain detail mechanical changes may be made in the invention, without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
'What is claimed is:
1. A pump of the class described comprising a pump cylinder, a frame supporting said pump cylinder, a tray hingedly secured to the lower end of said frame, an air supply pipe carried by said tray and communi eating with said pump cylinder, and a pressure gage carried by said tray.
2. A pump of the class described compris ing a pump cylinder, a frame supporting said pump cylinder, a tray hingedly secured to the lower end of said frame and provided with upwardly extending side flanges, an air supply pipe carried by said tray and communicatlng with said pump cylinder, said tray adapted to be swung in a closed position upon said frame, and means for holding said tray in a closed position upon said frame.
3. A pump of the class described comprising a pump cylinder, a frame supporting said pump cylinder provided with a pair of upwardly extending flanges secured to said pump cylinder, said frame provided with a plurality of side flanges, a tray pivotally secured to the lower end of said frame, a gage carried by said tray, a pipe connected to said gage and extending longitudinally of said tray, a supply pipe extending vertically of said frame and connected to said pump cylinder, and flexible means connected to said last mentionedpipe for facilitating the folding of said tray relative to said frame.
4. A pump of the class described comprising a frame, a pump cylinder carried thereby, a tray secured to said frame, said tray capable of being folded within said frame, a pipe secured to said pump cylinder and extending vertically of said frame in the rear thereof, said pipe provlded with an inwardly turned discharge end, a pipe carried by said tray, a gage carried by said tray,
hinge for connecting said tray with said frame, a supply pipe carried by said tray,
a check valve carried by the inner end of said supply pipe, a pressure gage connected to said supply plate in front of said check valve, a flexible tube connected to the inner end of said pipe, anda second pipe connected to said pump cylinder and also connected to said flexible pipe for supplying air thereto.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
