l. KLINGENBERG.
SHOE. APPLICATION FILED JAN.16,1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

anon.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRVIN KLINenNBnne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and neatly appearing combination, whereby a shoe upper and a shoe bottom are detachably connected together so that when an upper is worn out or destroyed by acids or the like, it may be expeditiously and easily removed from the shoe bottom, and a new upper may be as readily connected with the bottom with a view to prolonging the usefulness of the bottom, and thereby contributing to economy. Likewise when the sole and heel of a shoe out before the upper, the upper may besupplied with a new bottom, and in that way the usefulness of the upper may be prolonged.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig.
same.
Fig. 3 is atransverse section through the shoe.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 5 an enlarged detail view of a portion of the rim comprised in the bottom.
6 is a detail view of the retainlng loop of the improvement.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of 2 is a detail rear elevation of the the drawings.
In accordance with my invention, the sole 1 of the shoe bottom is provided adjacent to its rear end with an aperture 2, and con nected to and extending entirely around the sole is a rim 3, best shown in Fig. 5. The said rim 3 may be nailed or otherwise connected to the sole 1, and when deemed e2 pedient it may be lined with rubber, indicated by 4, or equivalent material, with a view to rendering the shoe water and dustproof.
At 5 is a retaining loop or band that is Specification of Letters me and State of that when the parts bottom are worn cross-section, and
including a sole Patented Nov. .23 1920.
Applicatitm filed January 10, 1920. Serial in. 351,755.
preferabl formed of spring-metal in the general-s ape of a shoe bottom, and is provided at its ends with hooks 6, designed to normally rest in the aperture 20f the sole 1, with a view to securely detachably connecting the retaining loop to the sole.
At 7 is the upper of the shoe, and at 8 is a sole that is preferably laid in the shoe and on the sole 1 when the connection of the upper to the sole 1 is completed.
It will be manifest from the foregoing are connected in the manner described, and it is desirable for any reason to connect the sole to a new upper or the upper to a new sole, it is simply necessary to remove the hooks taining loop 5 from the aperture 2, when the sole 1 and the upper 7 may be expeditiously and easily separated subsequently to the displacement of the loop 5, which latter manifestly may be expeditiously and easily accomplished. -Again when it is desired to fasten an upper 7 to a sole or shoe bottom equipped with my improvement, it will be apparent that the same may be accomplished with facility by arranging the edge portion of the upper against the rim 3, placing the retaining loop 5 around the edge portion of the upper, and springing the hooks 6 of the loop 5 into the aperture 2 of the sole.
, My improvement is advantageous'from an economical standpoint, not only because of the fact that old uppers maybe inexpensively provided with new bottoms, and vice versa, but also because of the fact that a shoe bottom may be equipped with a low or'high or a thick or thin upper, as the prevailing weather conditions make necessary.
It is to be understood that the rim 3 is preferably formed of sheet-metal, with its extended portion. of concavo-convex form in slitted at intervals, as in dicated by 3.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. The combination in a shoe, of a bottom in the rear end portion of which is an aperture, a rim connected to and extending around the sole, an upper arranged with its edge portion against the 6 of the rep 2. The combination in a shoe, of a sole, a rim attached to and extending around the sole, an upper arranged with its edge portion alongside said rim, and a retaining or binding 100p extending around the edge pop tion of the upper to hold the same to the rim; the sole and the retaining or binding loop having cooperating devices whereby the latter is detaehably connected-rte the :t'ormen "3. A shoe bottom including a sole, a rim 10 rconnected to and extending around the sole and ,a retaining or binding loop to hold an upper to said run; Said sole and retaining or binding 100 having cooperating means invin KLiNenNBnno.
