METAL REINFORCEMENT AND SUPPORT FOR CONCRETE TANKS.

T 0 all to hem it may concern Be it known that I, AXEL F. HoLMEERe, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Mateo, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Reinforcements and Supports for Concrete Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a metal reinforcement and support forconcrete tanks and the like.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple substantial cheaply manufactured concrete tank, such as a toilet flushing tank, a wash tray or the like, and especially to provide a metal reinforcing structure and support for the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal reinforcing structure which permits the tank to be bolted to a suitable support and without danger of fracturing the concrete when the bolts are tightened; further to provide a structure which not only protects andreinforces the upper edge of the tank, but which also serves as a spacer and a support for interior reinforcing rods and the like both before and after the concrete is poured.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed. having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tank.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the metal reinforcing member.
Fig. 3 is a central cross section of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail. A indicates in general a toilet flushing tank, consisting of side portions 2, end portions 3, and a bottom portion 4. The upper end of the tank is open and the edge is covered and reinforced by a continuous metal strip 5. The edges of this strip are hook-shaped as at 6 and are embedded in the concrete, thereby forming a tie between the concrete structure of the tank and the covering or reinforcing strip which prevents removal of the same once the concrete has become set.
Formed integral with the covering or reinforcing strip 5 is a downwardly extending plate 7 This plate is positioned interior of the tank and extends from end to end thereof as shown in Fig. 1. Formed in the plate is a plurality of oblong openings 8 which are produced by a punching operation, that is the metal is out along the edges 9 and 10, and the metal is then bent inwardly to form hook-shaped members 11, which serve two main functions: First that of a spacer and tie for a plurality of interior reinforcing rods 12, and secondly that of a tie between the plate 7 and the interior reinforcing rods.
In actual operation when the tank is constructed, it can be seen that the metal frame or reinforcing member, generally shown in Fig. 2, is placed in a mold. The reinforcing rods 12 are next positioned and are tied and spaced with relation to the plate 7 by means of the inwardly bent hook-shaped members 11. Chicken wire netting or other similar reinforcing means is then inserted and the concrete is finally poured, the mold being removed when this has become sufficiently set. A tank is in this manner produced which is thoroughly reinforced; the upper edge being reinforced by the strip 5, the inner face by the plate 7, and the tank as a whole by the rods 12 and the wire netting 14c. Cores are placed in the mold in alinement with the openings 8, formed in the plate 7 so that a plurality of alined openings are formed on the inner side of the tank through which bolts may be inserted to secure the tank when it is placed in position. Ordinary lag bolts or screws 15 maybe employed as shown in Fig. 3 and danger of fracturing the concrete structure of the tank is entirely avoided when the bolts are tightened due to the provision of the plate 7 as this prevents the bolt heads from contacting with the concrete portion of the tank.
The important feature of the present invention is the provision of the reinforcing member shown in Fig. 2. It serves several functions: first that of a support for the tank; second that of a spacer and securing means for the reinforcing rods, etc; third that of a support for the edge reinforcing strip 5; and fourth, that of a cover or plate which prevents fracture of the concrete when the securing bolts are drawn up or tightened.
Any suitable reinforcing means may be employed for the interior of the-tank, such as wire netting or the like, and the lower ends of the rods 12 are preferably bent at right angles as at 16 to further insure proper spacing and positioning of the same with relation to the exterior and interior surfaces of the tank, and while the tank as here described is constructed of concrete, it is obvious that any othersuitable composition may be employed; similarly that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be such "as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate or varying conditions may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a concrete tank of a metal reinforcing membertherefor, said member comprising a covering strip for the upper edge of thc'tank, a plate formed intogral therewith extending downwardly into the tank along one side thereof, and a p1urality of openings struck in the plateto form projections by which the plate may be .tied to reinforcing rods within the wall in spaced relation therewith, and also to provide openings for the reception of securing bolts.
2. The combination with a concrete tank of a metal reinforcing membertherefor, said member comprising a covering strip for the upper edge of the tank, meansron the strip tying it to the concrete, a plate formed integral with the strip extending downwardly into the tank along the inner side thereof, and a plurality of openings struck in the plate to form means for securing the plate to reinforcing means within the walls of the tank and also to provide openings for the reception of securing bolts.
3; The combination with a concrete tank of a metal reinforcing member therefor, said member comprising a covering upper edge of the tank, means on the strip for tying it to the concrete, a plate formed integral with the strip extending downwardly into the tank along the rear interior side thereof, reinforcing means in the concrete, n1eans on the plate serving as a spacer for said reinforcing means, and tying the plate thereto, and a plurality of openings formed in the plate and inthe tank for the reception of securing bolts. 7
