' whereby the life thereof is lengthened and leakage and decay prevented, or in other words to provide a reinforced concrete vault capable of being hermetically sealed so as to exclude air and moisture whereby the contents of the vaults are protected from deterioration.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a burial vault which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily assembled, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the, foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement .of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s wherein is shown an embodiment of the mvention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims. hereunto appended.

Figure 7 is a cross sectional view ofone of the vertical reinforcements for the body portion. 1 p 7 Referring to the drawings in detail, a burial vault in accordance with this invention, comprises an open top receptacle, referred to generally-by the reference character 1, and a lid or closure for the open top of the receptacle 1 and which is referred to generally by the reference character 2. l
The open top receptacle 1 includes metall-ic body portion formed throughout of sheet steel of the desired gauge and which consists of a bottom 3, a pair of end walls 4, 5 and a pair of side walls 6. 7. The body portion is of the desired width,- length and height and preferably is of rectangular contour. Riveted to the outer face of eachof the walls of the body portion is a set of spaced vertically disposed metallic reinforcing members. The outer members of each; set is positioned in proximity to the ends of that wall with which the set associates and the members of each set are of length to extend from a point in proximity to the top edge and terminate at a point in proximity to the bottom edge of that wall with which the set is associated. Each reinforcing member of each of the sets is indicated at 8 and as the reinforcing members 8 are of like construction, but one will .be described, as the description of one will apply to the other. Each of said reinand 12 are provided; with superposed open-- ings 14: for the passage of rivets 1 5 to fixedly secure the arms 11 and 12 against the outer face of that wall with which the reinforcing member is associated. In cross section each reinforcing member is of T- shapedcontour. Preferably the-arms 9 and are of greater width, in cross section than the arms .11 and '12. 7
Positioned against-the bends 13 of the rcinforcing members of each set is a set of longitudinally extending spaced reinforcing and anchoringbars or rods, preferably of cylindrical cross section. The rods of each set extend froma point in proximity to one end to a point in proximity to the other end of that wall of the body portion which the rods oppose. The rods of each of said sets areindicated at 16 and each rod is connected againstnthe bends 13 by couplingmembers 17 which envelop the rod and extend through apertures 18 formed in the reinforcing members. The number of coupling members correspond to the number ofreinforcing members of the set.

The lathing 21 is co-extensive with the inner face of the bottom 3, but the lathing 21 has its top edge position below the top edge of the walls 4.- to 7. Tie members 23 are provided for connecting the lathing 21 and 22 to the body portion, and the walls and bottom of the body portion are provided with openings 2% for the passage of tie me1n-- hers 23, and these latter are positioned between the reinforcing members 8 and 18.
Arranged against the inner face of the body portion and secured thereagainst by the metallic lathing, is a coating, lining or surfacing of plaster 25 or other suitable'material and which is of the desired thickness, but such surfacing, lining or coating, does not extend to the top edge of the walls of the body portion but terminates a substantial distance below said edge and provides a shoulder 26 which is co-extensive with the body portion.
Arranged against the outer face of the body portion and co-extensive therewith; is a concrete facing 26 of the desired thickness and which extends to the top edge of the walls of the body portion. The facing 26 is of greater thickness than the lining 25.
The cover or closure 2 comprises a metal lic body portion 27 formed from a metallic 'sheet of the desired gauge and provided at its sides and ends with an upturned flange 28 which is continuous. The body portion 27 is of a size, when the lid or closure is mounted in position, to abut against the inner face of the walls i, 5, 6 and 7; The flange 28 engages with the inner face of said walls and its top edge. is flush with the'top edge of the walls. When the lid or closure ismounted in position, the lange 28 and the walls 4, 5, 6 and 7 are soldered together, as indicated at 29 Figure 5 and which provides a sealtight 7 joint. Positioned against the lower face'of the body portion 27 and co-extensive therewith, is a metallic lathing 30, secured in position by tie members 31, which extend through openings 32 formed in the body 'portion 27, and the latter is provided throughoutits inner face with a lining 33, of plaster or other suitable material and of the desired thickness. The lining 33 is connnected with the body portion l7. by the metallic lathing 30 and is flush with 'the outer face of the flange 28. When th-e'hd or closure 1s mounted in position, the lining 33 abuts against the inner faces ofthe walls a, 5, 6 and 7,
below the flange 28 and seats on the shoulder or ledge 26 provided by the top edge of the lining 25 of the body portion of the receptacle. The body portion 27 is reinforced by a facing of concrete, which is indicated at and has its edges spaced from the flange 28. Surrounding the facing 33 and extending on the top edge of the facing 26 as well as interposed between the fiange 28 and the facing 33, is a sealing member 35 consisting of concrete and which is placed in position after the body portion 30 and lining 33 has been arranged in the top of the receptacle. The sealing member 35 is bevelled as indicated at 36.
In lieu of connecting the. rods 16 by coupling members to the reinforcing members 8, the rods 16 may be welded to the reinforcing members as shown in Figure 4. The connectingof the rods to the reinforcing members, by the coupling members is illustratcd in Figures 5 and 6. It is to be understood however, that the reinforcing bars 8'can be set up in any suitable manner with respect to the reinforcing members It is thought the many advantages of a burial vault, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall. within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Ehitt I claim is:
l. A burial vault comprising a metallic reinforced metallic container having an open top, a lining for said container having its top positioned below and in proximity to the top edge of the container,an outer covering for and throughout said container, and a-lid including a "metallic body portion having a non-metallic lining and a non-metallic facing, said non-metallic lining seating on the lining of the container, and said lid further including a non-metallic facing continuation extending and projecting on the covering for the container, said metallic body portion abutting against the inner face of the container and connected therewith and further concealed by its non-metallic facing continuation.
2. A burial vault comprising a metallic reinforced metallic container having an open top, aiming for said'container having its top positioned below and in proximity to the top edge of the container, an outer covering for and throughout said container, a lid including a metallic body portion having a non-metallic lining and a non-metallic facing, said. non-metallic lining seating on the lining of the container, and said lid further including a non-metallic facing continuation extending and projecting on the covering for the container, said metallic body portion abutting against the inner face of the container and connected therewith and further concealed by said non-metallic facing continuation, and metallic lathings connected to said container and metallic body portion and providing means for connecting the linings therewith.
3. A burial vault comprising an open top container provided with metallic reinforcements extending throughout the outer face thereof and concealing said reinforcements, said container further provided with a nonmetallic lining connected therewith and having its top edge positioned below the top of the container, and a lid having a non-metallic lining throughout its inner face seating on the non-metallic lining of the container, said lid further including a non-metallic facing continuation extending and project ing from its upper face and seated on the non-metallic covering for the container, said lid arranged within. abutting against and secured to the container above the non-1netallic lining for the latter.
4. A burial vault comprising an open top metallic container, a metallic lid element arranged within, abutting against and secured to the top of the container, metallic reinforcements on the outer face of said container, a covering of non-metallic material secured to the outer face of the containerand coextensive therewith and concealing said reinforcements, and a covering of nonmetallic material for said lid element extending throughout thereof and a continuatallic intermediate portion and an inner and an outer non-metallic portion, and a lid having its body formed of ametallic intermediate portion and non-metallic inner and outer portions, said metallic portions secured together, the non-metallic inner portion of the lid seating on the non-metallic inner portion of the receptacle, and a nonmetallic facing, forming a continuation of I the outer portion of the lid and seating on the metallic intermediate portion of the receptacle and lid and non-metallic outer portion of said receptacle.
6. A burial vault comprising an open top receptacle having its body formed of a metallic reinforced metallic intermediate portion and an inner and an outer non-metallic portion, said inner non-1netallic portion of less height than said outer non-metallic portion, and a lid having its body formed of a metallic intermediate portion and an outer and an inner non-metallic portion, the metallic portion of said lid arranged within and secured to the metallic portion of said receptacle'at the top thereof, the non-metallic inner portion of the lid seating on the nonmetallic inner portion of the receptacle, and a facing forming a continuation of the nonmetallic outer portion of the lid closing the points of connection between said metallic portions, further seating on these latter and also seating on the nonmetallic outer portion of the receptacle.
