A TTHNEYS PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. CRATE, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application lefl October 20, 1919. Serial No. 331,946.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES S. CRATE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi' Houston, in the county oi Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in envelops, and more particularly to envelops designed for interotlice use, an obj ect of the invention being to provide an envelop having improved means for indicating the destination of the envelop to any of a series of persons or locations.
A further object is to provide an envelop of the character stated having a series of spaces thereon with a separable or removable indicator adapted to be located in any of said spaces to indicate the destination ot the envelop.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of my improved envelop.
l represents my improved envelop which may be of any size and of any suitable ma` terial. The envelop 1 is provided in its front preferably, although not essentially, near one end with a transparent portion 2. A pocket is formed back of the transparent portion by means of a backing sheet 4 which is secured at its side and lower edge to the envelop, lines of stitching 5 being illust-rated for this purpose, although, of course, the backing sheet may be secured in any way desired.
The upper end of the pocket formed by the backing sheet 4 is open for the admis` sion of a card 6 which is divided into a series of spaces 7 adapted to contain the names or locations. To one side of the transparent section 2 a column of spaces 8 is provided and these spaces 8 register with the spaces 7 of the card 6. Each space 8 is provided with a retaining device 9, andi-ing with the a removable indicator 10 is adapted to be connected to any ot said retaining devices.
A convenient form of retaining device is the ordinary stud member oi" a snap iastener and the ordinary indicator may constitute the button or socket member of the snap fastener, and I have illustrated these devices in the drawings, but, of course, the invention is not limited to the particular censtruction of indicator or retaining device.
-In operation the envelop with its contents is carried to the person or location indicated by the position of the indicator 10 and from this person or location the envelop can be transferred to any other person or location on the card by simply changing the indicator 10 to the proper space 8 registering With the person or location to which the envelop is destined.
Such a construction of envelop facilitates the carrying on of business as it prevents miscarriage oi' important papers from one person or department to another and the envelop can be utilized for a long time as the spaces can be ample to provide for all persons or stations within an oiiice or department where such transfers of the papers are made. Also in case of changes in the ollice personnel, it is evident that the card can be removed and names substituted or added, or if necessary a new card can be used, which operations could not be effected if the names were printed upon the envelop.
Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangements of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An envelop having on its outer face adjacent one end vertical and horizontal lines forming a vertical column of spaces, retaining devices located centrally in said spaces, said envelop adjacent said column or' spaces having a transparent portion and a pocket formed back of the transparent portion and adapted to receive a card containing a column of destination spaces register- ,first-mentioned column of spaces, vand a removable indicator adapted to be connected to any of said retaining dej vices. v Y
2. An envelop having' on its outer face at one end vertical and horizontal lines form-` `horizontal lines registering With the hori- Zontal lines of the rstLmentioned spaces and containing above said lines printed -Inati' ter indicating destinations for said envelop.
8. An envelop having a transparent 1portion, a backing sheet secured in rear of the ytransparent portion and forming a pocket, a removable card located 1n the pocket and containin'g a column of envelop destination spaces, said envelop having beside the trans parent portion a c'olurnn of indicator spaces registering With the spaces Von thecard, a retaining device in each of the last-mentioned spaces, and an indicator adapted to be removably connected to any of said retaining devices. y
Y JAMES S. CRATE.
