HINGED Box.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application led April 6, 1920. Serial No. 371,636.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK S. HYATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinged Boxes, of which the following is a speciication.
My present invention relates to the construction of sheet metal boxes or cases and is particularly applicable to small vanity boxes in which powder, rouge or other substances may be carried.
The object of the invention is to provide a round, oval or other box of continuous curved contour with a hinged cover in such manner that the hinge will not materially project from or mar the continuity of the curved appearance of the box as a whole.
The invention consists in the improved construction of box hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a box constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section taken on the line 2 2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical cross-section taken on the line 3 3 Fig. 1.
The box is made of sheet metal and comprises two parts, a body and a cover, each preferably stamped or pressed to the desired form. The body portion consists of the usual bottom 1 and vertical side walls 2 preferably integral. The top or cover consists of the closure plate 3 and vertical walls or skirt 4 preferably adapted to telescope over the walls 2 of the body portion, all as is common in the art.
In the form of box illustrated the vertical walls have an oval contour, the cover being provided with a bead 5 preferably near or at the closure plate 3 and the body is provided with a bead 6 preferably at the bottom 1. These beads define the contour of the box and form a continuously curved periphery.
The body and cover are hinged together by any suitable form of hinge but preferably the hinge is formed of the material of the side walls 2 and 4. The side walls 2 and 4 are provided with a flat portion 7 be tween the beads 5 and 6 which flat portion i'n the case of an oval box is preferably on one of the long sides.
8 indicates the hinge joining the cover and body, the hinge pin being indicated at 9. The hinge is formed by suitably bending parts of the material of the side walls around the pin 9 as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The hinge is located in the fiat portion 7 of the side walls so that it does not project beyond or substantially beyond the periphery of the beads 5 and 6, thereby preventing the hinge from marring the contour line of the box as well as keeping it from catching other objects. By forming the hinge from the material of the box it can be readily made substantially flush with the side walls.
That l claim as my invention is 1. A box having curved walls and comprising a body and a cover, a bead around the periphery of the body, a bead around the periphery of the cover, said beads forming the continuous curved shape of the box, a iiat wall on one side of the box between said beads and a hinge disposed in said Hat wall.
2. An oval box comprising a body and a cover, beads around the body and cover maintaining a continuous oval contour to the box, a flat wall on the long side of the box between said beads and a hinge formed on the flat wall.
3. An oval box comprising a body and a cover, beads around the body and cover maintaining a continuous oval contour to the box, a lat wall on the long side of the box between said beads and a hinge formed on the iat wall, said hinge being substantially flush with the wall within the periphery of said beads. t
4. An oval box comprising a body and a cover, beads around the body and cover maintaining a continuous oval contour to the box, a flat wall on the long side of the box between said beads and a hinge securing the body and cover and disposed on the fiat wall, said hinge being formed of the material of the walls and within the periphery of said beads.
Signed at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, this 30th day of March, A. D. 1920.
FRANK S. HYATT.
