Description
R. W.- WILSON I July 3, 1923.
VANITY BOX 'Filed 001:. 6, 1922 awwento'c 351 Glbtomug Patented July 3, 1923.
RALPH WM.'WILSO1\T, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VANITY Box.
Application filed October 6, 1922. Serial No. 592,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH WV. VVrLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vanity Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of vanity boxes which are designed to contain a much larger quantity of powder than rouge as it is well known that the use of the two are in a proportion of approximately five to one. It is therefore desirable to provide a vanity box in which the powder will exceed the rouge by about that much.
My invention has for itsobject to provide a device of this character which will be both compact in size and inexpensive to manufacture, and has for its further object to provide a convenient means for reventing the small particles of rouge WlllCh fleck off of the compact when used from getting into the powder compartment.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawin which is hereunto annexed and is a part 0 the specification in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved vanity box opened.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box closed.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a top or plan view, showing the rouge compartment open and the powder compartment closed. I
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the device comprises a box 10, the outer wall of which is provided with a shoulder or bead 11. As illustrated, this bead is continuous in form but it is obvious, to persons skilled in the art that any projection which will serve as an abutment for the cover 12 will answer the purpose equally well. 1 a
The cover 12 is provided with a suitable hinge 13 which is secured to the wall of the box 10 in any convenient or suitable manner.
By making the boxes square, I am able to provide a hinge as long as the width of the box, thereby affording a greater degree of strength than can be obtained in a box where the sides are not flat, though obviously the box does not have tobe square. Itcan be formed in any suitable or desired shape, the
form illustrated being merely the preferred embodiment.
The cover 12 is provided with a peripheral wall 14, which is adapted to telescope the outer wall of the box 10 and abut thebead 11. A rouge compact 15 is mounted inside of the cover 12 and a powder compact 16 is mounted in the box 10.
I provide a cover 17 for the compartment containing the powder compact which is provided with a. peripheral wall 18 which telescopes the inside of the box 10.
A mirror 19 is provided on the inside of the cover 17.
In this construction, itwill be apparent that the user has both the powder and rouge compartments open at the same time and the mirror is conveniently arranged for use, at that time. The cover 17 is preferably provided with an outwardly extending flange 20 which exactly fits the inner surface of the peripheral wall 14 of the cover 12, as clearly seen in the sectional view, When this cover 17 is closed as in F1 4 it is apparent that that portion of the Imx Fig. 3.
in which the powder compact 16 is located is entirely closed. A suitable powder pufi 21 is mounted in the box 10 intermediate the powder compact 16 and the mirror 19 and a ters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a box having an inner and outer cover hinged at opposite sides of the box, a powder compact in said box, a powder puff for said powder, a mirror mounted inside of the inner cover, a vertical wall on said cover, adapted to telescope inside the vertical wall of the powder compartment of the box, a flange on said inner cover adapted to engage and abut the upper edge of the side wall of the box, an outer cover having peripheral walls which telescope the outside of the side walls of the box and abut the shoulder formed thereon, the flange on the inner cover being fitted to the inside of the wall of said upper cover, a rouge compact on theinside of said outer 5 cover.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a boX having an inner and outer cover hinged at opposite sides of the box, a powder compact in said box, a 10 powder putt for said powder, a mirror mounted inside of the inner cover, a vertical Wall on said cover, adapted to telescope inside the vertical Wall of the powder compartment of the box, a flange on said inner cover adapted to engage and abut the upper 1 edge of the side Wall of the box, an outer cover having peripheral walls which telescope the outside of the side walls of the box and abut the shoulder formed thereon, the flange on the inner cover being fitted 20 to the inside of the Wall of said upper cover, a rouge compact of smaller size than the powder compact on the inside of said outer cover.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the 0. foregoing specification.
RALPM WM. WILSON.
