UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK GOERTZ, OF NEWARK, AND RUSSELL WHITCOMB, 0F ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORS IO AUGUST GOERTZ AND COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Applicationfiled June 6, 1919. Serial No.-302 ,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and RUSSELL WHITCOMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of- New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. V I This invention relates, generally, to improvements in cases or boxes adapted to contain face-powders; and, the present invention has reference, more partlcularly, to a novel construction of toilet article in the A: form of a double-compartment powder-box ing means and for the purposes above stated, providor case, adapted to contain powders, in the form of compacts or cakes, or otherwise,
and of different colors, one compact being,
red or pink rouge, and the other compact being a white face-powder, the box or case being provided with means for keeping the variously colored rouge and face-powder separate from each other, and, furthermore, to provide a box or case with a cake-retainwhich can be readily detached and separated from above the compartments of the box or case, for the removal from or replacing withinthe said compartments of the usual compacts or cakes of rouge and face-powder. v
The invention has for its principal ob: ject to provide a novel and" simply-constructed powder-box or case of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth,
ing a. box or casing, in. which variously colored rouge and face-powder, as compacts or in cake-form or otherwise, may be placed for use, and may be removed therefrom, if desired, without any possibil ty of the powder of one colorbecoming mlxedor intermingling with the 7 powder of another color, orof the color of the rouge spoil ng the color of the face-powder.
The present invention has for its further Specification of Letters Patent.

object to provide a powder-box or casing dividing or separating wall which serves as a carrier with which said guard or retaining means is adaptedto be brought into frictional holding or retaining engagement, but maybereadily detached for removal from the'box or case, when necessary.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention conslsts, primarily, in the novel powder-box hereinafter set forth; and, the presentinvention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the va rious devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of theclaims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said Specification.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is aplanview of a powder-box or case showing one embodiment of the principles ofthe present invention, the box or case being represented with its lid opened, and illustrating in connection with the main body of the'box or case, the compact or powder-cake retaining means in its position for retaining the rouge and powder-cakes in place.
Fig. 2- is a'longitudinal vertical sectional representation of the several parts represented in said Fig. 1, but showing the lid in its closed position. I
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the device, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2; and Fig.- 4 is a similar vention, the main body thereof comprislng a base 2 and side-walls 3, forming a box or case which is preferably of elongated configuration, the same being centrally divided by a laterally extending wall-member 4,
suitably secured in position in any manner, the said wall-member with the base and sidewalls of the main body of the box or case, providing two compartments, as 5 and 6,. in which the rouge-compact 7 and the facepowder compact 8 are adapted to be placed,
substantially as shown in the several figures of the drawings. v
' As shown, at the rear, the side-walls of the said body are provided with suitably constructed pintle-receiving ears or. lugs 9,
between which is disposed a pintle-receiving ear or lug 12, extending from a portion of the surrounding rim or flange 11 of the cover or lid 10, a pin or pintle 13 being inserted in said registering ears or lugs, in the usual manner, thus providing a desirable hingeconnection for closing the said cover or lid down over the main body of the box or case,
as represented in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the drawings. At its forward or front edge the said lid or cover is made with a suitably formed catch, as 14, which is adapted to be forced over and sprung into separable holding engagement with a retaining lug or projection, as 15, located in the proper place and extending outwardly from the'front of the side-wall 3, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1, 5 and 7 of the drawings. Suitably secured within the inner space with which the said cover or lid 10 is provided, isa correspondingly formed inlay16, the same being provided with openings 17 and 18, back of which are placed mirrors 19 and 20, corresponding to the compartments 5 and 6, the said inlay'being also formed with a centrally disposed and laterally extending channel or groove 21, substantially as shown and for the purposes'tobe presently set forth.
Inorder to properly retain the rouge and face powder compacts 7 and8 within the respective compartments 5 and 6 of the device,
and, furthermore, when removing some of the portions of the compacts by rubbing, to prevent some of the contents or mixture of V the one compact getting upon the other compact, and thereby spoil the color thereof, a
the main body of the box or case, and espea cially with the dividing wall-member 4. This retaining member consists, essentially, of a pair of side- flanges 22 and 23,'which are connected with and extend in opposite di I r rections from a supporting element or member 24, said element or member 24 being suitably channeled, as at 25, so'as to be fitted in frictional contact uponthe upper edge of the said wall-member 4, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The said side or being provided with the arc-shaped edgeportions 26, which are turned down slightly,
as at 27, so as to avoid sharp edges and the possibility of cutting or tearing the skin of the fingers, when in the act of rubbing off some of the rouge or face-powder from the compacts Within the compartments 5 and 6 and held in place by said flanges 22 and 23 which extend slightly over portions of the respective compacts, substantially as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Other supporting members, a's'28 and 29, may be pro-' vided, said members '28 and 29 extending at right angles, downwardly from the marginal end-portions of the respective guard- .flanges. These members 28 and 29 prevent any possible tilting of the retaining member or guard, when supported upon the upper edge of the wall-member 4, but said members 28 and 29 are not absolutely necessary, and
they may be omitted, if desired-. When the lid or cover is closed down upon the main body of the powder-box, the supporting element or member '24 and the channel or groove 21' are brought into registratiom as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that the closing down of the lid orcover upon the main body of the box or case will not be interfered with. r 1
The objects and purposes, as Well as theproper manipulation, of the device will be clearly understood from the foregoing description of the invention, and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
Of course we are aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts aswell as in the details of the con-' tails of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying draw- 1. A powder-box comprising a main box or casehaving side-walls and a dividing wall-member arranged to provide a plurality of compact-receiving compartments, and a retaining member within said box or case comprising oppositely. extending sideflanges and a centrally disposed and channeled supporting member adapted to be mounted upon the upper edge of said Wallmember, combined with a lid or cover for said box or case, said lid or cover being provided with a channel with which the said supporting member is adapted to be brought into registration when said lid or cover is closed.
2. A powder-box comprising a main box or case having side-walls and av dividing wall-member arranged to provide, a plurality of compact-receiving compartments, and a retaining member within said box or case comprising oppositely extending sideflanges and a centrally disposed and channeled supporting member adapted to be mounted upon the upper edge of said wallmember, combined with a 11d or cover for said box or case, and an inlaysecured within said lid or cover, said inlay being provided with a channel with which the said supporting member is adapted to be brought into registration when said lid or cover is closed. 7
3. A powder-box comprising a main box or case having side-walls and compact-receiving compartments, and a retaining member within said box or case comprlsing a pair of laterally extending and concavely arc-shaped side-flanges, said arc-shaped flanges being bounded by downwardly extending marginal projections, and a cen-- into registration when said lid or cover is closed. r
4:. A powder-box comprising a main box or case having side-walls and a dividing wall-member arranged to provide a plurality of compact-receiving compartments, and a retaining member within said box or case comprising a pair of laterally extending and concavely arc-shaped side flanges, said arc-shaped flanges being bounded by downwardly extending marginal projections, and a centrally disposed and channeled supporting member between said sideflanges adapted to be mounted upon the upper edge of said wall-member, combined with a lid or cover for said box or case,
and an inlay secured within said lid or cover, I i
