ELMER E. CORNELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PUNCHING-SHEARS.
Application filed May 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Emma E. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching- Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to shears and more particularly to punching shears, my object being the provision of a simple, economical and effective hand implement for slotting paper, card board, sheet metal and the like, as well as one capable of ready adjustment in respect to the length of the slot to be cut.
VVith the above in mind therefore, I propose a device of the nature stated having the following characteristics and structure, this description referring to the accompanying drawing, in which, 7
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the implement closed,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the implement open,
Fig. 8 is an end View, and v Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on line ll of Fig. 1.
Referring now to these figures, my invention comprises a. slotting punch consisting of opposed jaws 15 and 16, the former of which is in a single piece having a square cut extremity 17 and equaling in thickness the slot to be cut. The jaw 15 is moreover provided with an inner concave face which, being in breadth the full thickness of the jaw as seen in Fig. 4, forms inner side cutting edges as well as a cutting edge along the inner portion of its square outer face.
As thus constructed, the jaw 15 is movable into the inner side of the conformable opening of jaw 16, the latter formed of side plates 18 and 19 as seen in Fig. 4E coimected at their outer end by a spacing block 20. These side plates 18 and 19, as well as the spacing block 20, having beveled inner edge faces forming inner cutting edges around three sides of the jaw opening so as to cooperate with the cutting edges of jaw 15 formed as above, when the latter aw enters jaw 16.
The jaw 15 is preferably formed integral with, and at one end of, its shank 21 which is preferably in the form of a plate dlsposed and extending between the side plates 22 and 23 forming the shank of jaw 16, and pivoted by a pivot screw 24 so that the shanks of the Specification of Letters Patent.
' two jaws cross one another.
Patented June 22, 1920.
Serial No. 296,225.
The side plates 22 and 23 of the shank of j av 16 are preferably integral continuations of side plates 18 and 19, lying in the planes of said side plates 18 and 19.
The shank plate 21 has at its opposite end side plates 25 secured to its side face and provided with slotted openings 26 in alinement with a similar opening of plate 21, so as to form a handle. The outer surfaces of the side plates 25 are preferably in the plane of the outer surfaces of side plates 22 and 23 of the shank of jaw 16, so that the shanks of the jaws when the latter are closed present plane unbroken side surfaces. The inner edges of these side plates 25 are cut away to conform to the inner edges of the slde plates 22 and 23 of the shank of jaw 16 and the end of the plate 21 is similarly cut away to conform to the inner edge of spacing handle block 27 of the shank of jaw 16 which has a slotted opening in alinement with similar openings of said side plates 22 and 23 to form the handle of jaw 16.
It is thus apparent that, working as it does into the opening of jaw 16, the jaw 15 has a shearing action in view of the angular rela-,
tionship of the crossed shanks, and may be effectively used for slotting purposes cup to the full lengths of the aws.
I preferably utilize a slot depth gage however in the form of a slotted gage bar 28 having a longitudinal slot 29 and provided at its inner end with an angular proj ection 30 which extends slightly beyond the inner face of jaw 16 so as to act as an abutment to receive the edge of a plate or sheet inserted between the jaws. This bar 28 is disposed along one of the side plates of the jaw 16 and is adjustably secured by screws 31 passin through its slot 29, either special screws for this purpose or the screws used to secure these side plates in connection with the jaw spacing block 20.
I claim:
1. A. slotting punch having a pair of mov able jaws one of which is formed with side and end cutting edges, the other jaw comprising spaced side plates forming cutting edges receiving the first jaw, crossed shanks, one consisting of a single plate at one end of which the first jaw is integral, and the other shank consisting of spaced plates between which the first shank extends and at one end of which the side plates of the sec ond jaw are integral, said shank plates having handle openings in their opposite ends, handle pieces secured to opposite sides of said opposite end of said first mentioned shank plate and a handle piece secured between the spaced plates at said opposite end of, the second shank, said handle pieces being apertured in registry with said handle openings in said plates, and a working pivot extending through the shank'plates intermediate their ends.
V QIA slotting.punchflhzving a pair of movable jaws one of which is formed with side andendlcutting edges,'the other jaw comprising spaced side plates forming cutting edgesreceiving the first jaw, crossed shanks one consisting of a single plate at one end of which the firstj aw is integral and the other shank consisting of spaced plates between which the first shank extends and at one end of which the side plates of thesecond jaw are integral, said shank plates havingfhandle openings in their opposite ends, handle pieces secured to opposite sides of said oppositeend of said first mentioned shank plate and a handle piece secured between the spaced plates-at said opposite end of the second shank, the edges of said handle pieces of the first shank plate being cut away to conform to the edges of the spaced plates of the second shank and the edge'of the first shank plate being cut away to conform to the *dge of the handle piece of the second shank, said handle pieces being apertured lIllBglStQl WltllSiLlCl handle openings in said plates and a working pivot extending through the shank plates intermediate of their ends. 7 s V s r a 3.
