Description

Sept. 16 1924.
1,508,687 s. E. GILLEY PLIERS Filed March 6. 1923 Patented Sept. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES .SCOTCH E. GILLEY, OF WARREN, ARKANSAS.
PLIERS.
Application filed March 6, 1923.
To all w from it may cmicern- Be it known that I, SCOTCH E. GILLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Bradley, State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper- 1 tains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to pliers, of the crossed handle type, and has for its object to provide the inner sides of the jaws with removable plates, said plates being provided with transverse ribs, whereby a piece of wire or metal may be corrugated, and with registering cutter edges, whereby material may be cut. Y
A further object is to provide the inner faces of the jaws with longitudinally disposed dovetailed channels for the reception of similarly shaped ribs carried by the removable plates. Also to provide the jaws with transversely disposed apertures having removable pins therein, which pins pass through channels in the ribs of the removable plates and hold said plates against displacement.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pliers;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View through the jaws of the pliers;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the removable plates;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective viewof the outer end of one of the jaws, showing a pin in position to be inserted therein; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the removable plates.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates crossed handle members, which members are pivotally connected together at 2, and are provided with aws 3. The aws 3 are provided with longitudinally disposed Serial No. 623,136.
wedge-shaped channels 4; on their inner sides, which channels receive the dovetailed ribs 5 of the removable plates 6, thereby preventing lateral displacement of the plates 6. To prevent longitudinal displacement of the plates 6, transversely disposed pins 7 are provided, which pins extend through apertures 8 in the jaws 3, and through transversely disposed grooves 9 in the ribs 5, and consequently the plates are rigidly held against longitudinal movement. The pins 7 fit closely in the apertures 8 and are preferably spread at their ends for preventing displacement. lVhen it is desired to remove the pins they may be driven out in any suitable manner- The removable plates 6 at their outer ends are provided with transversely disposed teeth 10, which teeth in the opposite plates are out of registration with each other, therefore it will be seen that when the plates are forced together, a piece of metal or wire disposed between the jaws will be crimped or corrugated. The inner ends of the. plates 6 are cutaway as at 11 and have their outer edges provided with cutters 12, extending towards each other, which cutters may be utilized for cutting wire or other material. By providing the removable plates 6, it will be seen that when the cutters become dull or worn, it will be necessary only to provide a new plate, or if the crimping teeth become worn so as not to properly function, it will not be necessary to obtain an entirely new set of pliers, but only new plates.
From the above it will be seen that removable members are provided on the jaws of pliers which will obviate the necessity of obtaining a new set of pliers when the cutter or teeth become worn, and it will also be seen that the plates 6 may be easily and quickly attached or detached.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with oppositely disposed jaws of a pair of pliers, of removable plates carried by said jaws, said plates being provided with transversely disposed crimping ribs, the ribs of one plate being out of registration with the ribs of the other plate, cutters carried by the inner ends of the plates and adjacent one side thereof, said plates being provided with dovetail-shaped name to this specification in the presence of ribs longitudinally disposed and iri similarly two subscribing witnesses. s1a ed ciannels in tie jaws anc ins ex- 1 w tending through registering a perturs in the SL071 CH '(JILLLY' 5 jaws and registering channels in the outer \Vitnesses:

In testimony whereof I have signed my HELEN N. HARRIS.
