J. L. STENGEL BELT PUNCH PLIERS Filed April 23 1923 Patented June 3, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH L. STENGEL, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BELT PUNCH PLIERS.
Application filed April 23, 1923. Serial No. 634,016.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. S'rnNcnn, a citizen of the United States residing at Cincinnati, in the county of" amilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Belt Punch Pliers, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to belt punch pliers or tools used when coupling the ends of round leather beltin The particular object of this type'or p ier is to square off the end of a piece of belting and pierce a hole near the end thereof in such a manner that two squared ends of belting can be neatly arid readily secured together by means of a wire coupling.
Various types of pliers have been constructed to attain this object, but hereto-fore great diiiiculty has been experienced in constructing a tool that would punch or pierce a hole in the center of the squared end at every operation, and it will readily be seen that if the belting is punched anywhere but in the center of the end, the joint will be materially weakened thereby.
The principal object of my invention is to construct a handy, com act and eflicient belt punch plier that can e relied upon at all times to punch or pierce a hole in the center of the beltin and to attain this object I construct my elt punch plier in such a manner that the belting to be punched will be firmly gripped within the jaws of the pliers before attempting to pierce a hole in the belting.
In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a common type pair of pliers embodying my invention, the jaws of the pliers shown open, ready to receive a piece of belting.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my complete device showing the final position of the lever D, and punch E, after the belting has been squared and punched, the belting not being shown,
Fig. 4 is a detail showing the cutter C and extension 0 Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the slot d and method of securing the piercing means therein, and
Fig. 6 is a detail showing the preferred form of piercing member.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 1. A pair of handle levers A and B are crossed and fulcrumed at a the extended portion a of the lever A is secured to the upper jaw a by the rivet a and the extended portion b of the lever B is secured to the lower aw by the rivet 6 thereby forming a pair of pliers.
In order to maintain the jaws a and b in parallel relation to each other when the pliers are in either open or shut position said jaws are provided with longitudinal slots a and b, in whichslide the studs at and 35, secured to the handle levers A and B respectively.
A cutter C is secured to one side of the upper jaw a by screws 0 and is extended at 0 so as to coact with a supporting bracket strip 0 on the opposite side of said jaw, in forming a bracket to which is secured the piercing lever D, by means of the stud d. A punch or piercing member E, constructed with circumferential heads 6 and e at the upper end thereof is loosely secured within a slot (1 formed in the piercing lever D, and prevented from displacement therefrom by means of said beads. The lower cutting portion of said piercing member is adapted to operate thru the hole a in the upper jaw a said hole opening into the jaw of the pliers in the center of the angular cut away portion a. The lower jaw 12 is provided with a corresponding an lar cut away I) and hole I) which coact with said upper 'aw in holding and punching the leather belting.
A spring 03 is secured between the upper side of the upper jaw a and the under side of the piercing lever D to hold said lever in position and to assist the piercing lever to return to its normal position as shown in Fig. 1, after having punched a hole as indicated in Fig. 3.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The leather belting is inserted between the jaws a and 5 preferably resting in the angular cut away portion 6, the handle members A and B are then gripped together thereby squaring the end of the belting by means of the cutter C and securely gripping the belting between the cut away portions a and b in the jaws a and 5 The piercing lever D is then gripped or pressed to ward the handle B, thereby carrying the punch or piercin member E thrg the center of the belting. n releasing thelever D the spring d operates to assist in disengaging the punch from the belting.
In the particular embodiment of my invention, selected for illustration, 1 have shown angular cut away portions on each jaw, which combine to make a diamond shape opening when the jaws are closed, it will be seen that this construction enables me to hold the belting at all times firmly and in alignment with the piercing means.
My improved piercing means is preferably constructed, dagger shaped or oval in cross section, the lower end being gradually ta ered to a oint, so as to pierce an oval ho e in the elting rather than punch a round hole therein.
I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction as shown but claim within the scope of my invention all modifications readable on the claims that will be finally allowed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 0f the United States:
1. In combination with a pair of pliers, a
lever fulcrumed to said pliers and punching means carried by said lever ada erate thru fthe jaws of h 2. In a belt punching'instrument comprising a pair of pliers provided with a belt receiving in the jaws thereof, a lever secured to one of said jaws, punching means carried by said lever, and a hole thru one of said jaws openipg into said recess and adapted to receive said punching means.
In a belt punching instrument con-p rising a pair of pliers provided with a receiving recess in the jaws thereof, a ever fulcrumed to one of Bald, jaws, a slot in s, lever, and a punch oosely seen'r wi said slot, adapted operate thru said. ans.
4. In a be tp se ing ins mms rising a pair-0f pliers pro-Yid with a belt receiving recess n the jaws hergo ia le er f l r d to one of sa d j ws, caching means ar d by s d e means %Q we metically releasing sa d p nching m ans and S d lever on th eomp stie 0f the punchin operation. i
In tesgimeny ere 0i I here hereunt set my hand. I
