To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. Roman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, county of Knox, State of Tennessee, have invented an Improvement in Filling Clamping and Parting Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing,representing like parts.
This invention relatesto automatic filling replenishing looms wherein the running filling is replenished prior to complete exhaustion and wherein the old or spent filling is parted between the cloth and the shut tle by partingmeans mounted upon the carrier such as the usual swinging shuttle feeler so as to be moved bodily rearwardly and forwardly or toward and from the lay.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved, simple, and effective means for operating the filling, clamping and parting means when, and only when, a fresh filling carrier is transferred from the hopper or supply to the shuttle 0n the lay.
The invention is an improvement upon, and is similar in its general object and purpose to that shown in, the patent to Davis No. 1,084,557 8 granted January 20, 1914.
The nature and object of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
The drawings illustrate the invention as embodied in the well known Northrop type of automatic filling replenishing looms.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a portion of the automatic filling replenishing loom with the present invention embodied therein.
Fig. 2 is a detail in front elevation of the upper portion of the carrier for the filling clamping and parting means and the parts connected thereto.
The construction and operation of the automatic filling replenishing loom herein illustrated being well known and familiar to those skilled in the art, and the patent to Davis above mentioned showing a construction securing the same broad result as that here secured, it will be necessary to describe in detail only those features and their operation immediately concerned with the present invention.
The loom frame 1 supports the hopper 2 containing the supply of fresh filling carriers lVhen the running filling in the shuttle on the lay has become substantially exhausted, indication of that fact is trans mitted through a well known mechanism to the rod 4 which is thereupon rocked to raise the arm 5 and swing the shuttle feeler 6 rearwardly and at the same time to raise the dog .7 connected to the transferrer 8 into'the path of a'bunter 9 on the lay 10. If the shuttle is properly boxed allowing the shut tle feeler to pass the end of the shuttle, then the hunter 9 striking the dog 7"swings the transferrer 8 downwardly, forcing a fresh filling carrier3 from its position in the hopper down into the shuttle 11 on the lay 'therebeneath, and simultaneously ejects the partially spent shuttle therefrom. When the fresh filling carrier is in the hopper ready for transfer it rests against an abutment 12 and over a support 13 pivoted at 14 so that in order to pass out from the hopper into the shuttle this support 13, must be swung downwardly about its pivot. This support has rigidly connected with it a fin ger 15. A spring 16 is held between a notched or slotted lug 17 projecting from the hopper stand Qand the head 18 of a slide rod 19 connected with the finger15, and. thus acts to hold the pivoted support 13 in, and return it to, its normal posit1on as illustrated in Fig. 1.

A bracket 27 is rigidly secured to and projects upwardly from the shuttle" feeler 6. This bracket is extended rearwardly parallel i with the head of the shuttle feeler to form a shaft or stud 28, and on thisstud is pivotally mounted or fulcrumed a lever. This lever is conveniently made of a single pieceof stiff wire. The central portion is wound in spiral form to form the hub 29 while one end forms an arm 30 extending laterally toward the hopper and theiother end forms an arm 31 l extending in the opposite direction. The arrangement'of the parts is such that when the shuttle feeler with the filling clamping and parting means is moved 'rearwardly into position to clamp andipart the filling thearm 30 will be directly beneath the arm 36. Consequently when the transferrer 8 swings downwardly and 'a filling carrier is present beneath the transferrer the filling carrier support 13 will be rocked downwardly carrying with' it the arm 36 thus depressing the arm 30 raising the arm pressits rearward end to clamp and part the filling.
