This, invention relates to a combined thread clamp and cutter. for weft replenish# ing looms and? an object of the invention is to provideaV device of this character wherein the cutting motion is derived from the lay but under control of the transferrer mechanism, the cutter operating by the joint action of the lay and transferrer.
In weft replenishing` looms it is desirable to cut the thread of theoutgoing bobbin at thetime of transfer and to. clamp the same to prevent it from being drawn into the cloth. Under normal conditions the cutter ispreferably outof the range of the shuttle soi thatY should the latter.. be improperly boxed it will not strike the cutter on the forward beat: of the lay. In the type of replenishing mechanism` shown in Patent No. 1,030,748v the transferrer latclr is `lifted into.- engaging. position with the bunter on thel lay when` the indicating shuttle ap* proaches the replenishing mechanismf but should theV shuttle be improperly boxed the replenishingI mechanism is revoked to pre vent transfer and under such conditions it is desirable to prevent operationof the cutter;
Accordingly, it is a more particular object of my invention to provide a= cutter and clamp normally out of the path-of the shut-- tle and moved tofopen position by. the replenishing mechanism but depending for movement to cutting position upon the transferrery mechanism so that should the replenishing mechanism be revoked after the cutter jaws are opened the cutter will not move rearwardly tosever the thread. Itis a further object of my invention to provide an angularly movable cutter Vblade which will serve also as one of the clamping elements, this construction requiring that the cutter be normally closed and opened only prior to transfer.
lVith ,these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combinationi and arrangement. of parts hereinafter described and set` forth in the claims.`

l have shown my invention as appliedft'o a multi-color weft replenishing mechanism having a frame 10 in the upper portion of which is mounted for angular motion a shaft 1l the forward end of' which is provided with a lever 12. An arm 13 extends from the lever and is connected with the upper arm 14 of a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 onthe frame 10. Depending from lever 1.5 is a connector 17 the lower endof whichis bent upwardly toform a loop 13 whiclrsurrounds the transferrer latch 19. pending from the hub 21. of the transferrer arm 22 which is pivotally mounted on fixed stud 23. At the time of transfer the shaft 11 is given a clockwise rotation as viewed in Fig'. 2 which results in raising connector 17 so that latch 19 willv be lifted into the path of thebunter 24 onv the lay 25. The matter thus far describedis of the usual construction and. forms no part of, my present lnventi on.
In carrying out my improvements I. pro.- vide the lever 12 with a connector 30 the lower end, of which is connected toan arm 31 secured to rod 32, saidy rod.l extending between bearings 33 on the breast beam 34 and being bent rearwardly and having a curved end as at 35. Y
Secured to the breast beanrisa frame 36 which is slotted to receive a slide 37, said slot being closed at the upper portion thereof by a plate` 33 which prevents.displacement of the slide 37. rlhe rear end ofthe slide 37 is formed as a cutter 39 and has-pivoted thereto an angularly movable cutterfblade 40 whichmoves pivotally about the bolt 11 carried by the slide. Saidblade-AO. has depending therefrom` a foot 42 positioned to engageA the lay when the cutter isin operative position. A flexible clampingplate 43 is secured tothe slide and engagesithat part of the cutter 40 opposite the cutter 39. A pin /14 carried by cutter 40 limitsthe closing movement of the cutter.
The forward portion ofthe slide; 37` has upstanding;therefrom-a pin tzwhich passes through a slot 46 formedvin theend of?l lever 47.. The lever A7 is-pivoted on-an upright fixed stud 48 and has threaded therein a push rod 49 the forward end of which is threaded to receive loch nuts 50 and the rearward end of which is offset as at 51 to provide a shoe for engagement with one of the arms 20. A coil spring 52 surrounds the stud 48 and has the lower end thereof secured in fixed position and has its upper end in engagement with lever 47, said spring normally holding the lever in the position shown in Fig. 3 with the shoe 51 in contact with one of the arms 20. The shoe is angularly adjustable on the lever to vary the point at which the lever and shoe contact with each other.
Under normal conditions the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 3 with the 'cutter and clamp closed and in forward position so as to be out of the path of a misplaced shuttle. The parts will remain in this position until a transfer is about to take place, at which time the latch 19 and connector 30 `will be raised, the former to set the transferrer latch and the latter to move the bent end 35 of the rod to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. As end 35 swings on its ivot it will enga-ge foot 42 and move memer 40 about the pivot thereof. rEhe cutter will remain in this open but inoperative position until the bunter 24 engages the latch 19, at which time the transferrer arm will be lowered and the arms 2O moved forwardly. As said arms move toward the front the shoe 51 will rock lever 47 about its axis against the action of spring 52 and the slide 37 will be moved rearwardly, the motion being derived from the transferrer mechanism and timed so as to move rearwardly as the lay moves forwardly. fis the lay approaches front center it will engage the foot 42 to cause the pivoted cutter to co-act with cutter 39 to sever the thread, the latter being clamped between flexible blade 43 and cutter 40 to prevent the same from being drawn into the shed.
It will be seen that the relative motion of the cutter with respect to the lay is approximately double the motion of the lay itself so that the time for starting the cutter on its rearward movement can be delayed to give the shuttle more time to enter the boX. ln moving the cutter rearwardly at a rate which is approximately proportional to the forward advance of the lay 1 am enabled to cut the filling at a faster rate than would be possible if the motion were derived from the lay along and l [ind this to be an advantage in certain classes of yarn where a quick motion of the cutter is more likely to sever the thread than a slower movement. Also, although the cutter is moved to open position by the replenishing mechanism it is not moved to operative position except on a transferring beat, revocation of the replenishing mechanism being effective to prevent movement of the cutter to cutting position.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modilications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and 1 do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what l claim is:
in a Vweit replenishing loom, transferrcr mechanism, a lay, thread cutting mechanism, and means having a portion to be erw fred and moved forwardly by the transfer er mechanism on a transferring beat of the lay, said means having another portion to move rearwardly and move the cutting mechanism toward the lay.
2. 1n a weft replenishing loom, a transferrer, a lay to actuate the same, a thread cutter normally in forward inoperative position, and connections between the cutter and the transferrer to move the cutter toward the lay to operative position as the transferrer is actuated by the lay, the cutter being controlled in all of its movements toward the lay by the transferrer mechanism.
3. In a weft replenishing loom, a lay, a thread cutter normally in inoperative position, and means to derive motion from the lay and impart said motion to the cutter' to move the same bodily to operative position toward the lay as the latter' advances, said cutter being under positive control of the means and lay during the movement of said cutter toward the lay.
4. In a weft replenishing loom, a lay, a transferrer mechanism operable by the lay, a thread cutter and clamp combined normally in closed inoperative position, means to open the cutter and clamp by the replenishing mechanism, means to move the cutter and clamp bodily to operative position by the transferring mechanism when the latter is operated by the lay, and means operable by the lay to close said cutter and clamp as the latter advances, said cutter and clamp being under positive control of the lay on the movement of said cutter and clamp toward the lay.
5. ln a weft replenishing loom, a lay, a transferrer mechanism operable by the lay, a cutter slidable toward and from the lay and normally in inoperative closed position, a lever operatively connected to said thread cutter and ac-tuable by the transferrer mechanism when the latter is operated by the lay to move said slide positively throughout mov-ement thereof toward the lay.
6. ln a weft replenishing loom, a lay, a transferrer mechanism operable by the lay, a thread cutter slidable toward and from the lay and normally in forward closed position, a lever operatively connected to the thread cutter, an angularly adjustable pusher lOO carried by the lever and normally in engagement with a portion of the transferrer mechanism, and resilient means to position said lever to hold the thread cutter in forward position, said pusher being moved forwardly by the transferrer mechanism when the latter is operated by the lay to oseillate the lever and move said cutter rearwardly.
7. In a weft replenishingl mechanism, a transferrer mechanism operable thereby, a
combined thread cutter and clamp normallyy in closed inoperative position, means to open the cutter and clamp by the replemshing mechanism, means to move the cutter and clamp toward the lay to operative position by the transferrer mechanism as the latter is operated by the lay, means to close the cutter and clamp by the lay, and means to move the cutter and clamp'forward to inoperative position as the lay recedes from its forward position, Said cutter and clamp being controlled as to position by the transferrer mechanism in all positions occupied thereby when moving toward and from operative position.
