FILLING-END CONTROLLER.

Be it known that I, PATRICK KEEGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-End Controllers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawin s representing like parts.

The object of the present invention is to provide a spent filling end controller of simple construction which will enga e the filling between the shuttle box or bobbin and the ejected filling-carrier when replenishment is effected and efiiciently hold such filling end that it may not be carried into the shed on a subsequent pick of the shuttle.
In accordance with the present invention, the filling end controller is associated with the replenishing mechanism so that normally the filling end controller occupies the inoperative position and is moved to op'er;
ative position when replenishment of filling is called by some form of detecting mechanism.
it has heretofore been proposed to pro vide means for preventing the spent filling 5 end leading from the spent filling carrier or bobbin from being carried into the shed, and some of such devices have been associated with the replenishing mechanism to be called into operation only on replenishment {m of filling, and some of these have been fairly successful in their purpose. The present invention, however, is a further development of this general class of devices and seeks to simplify the mechanical features thereofas well as to efiiciently operate to the desired end.

The loom frame 1 has mounted thereon the bracket 2 for supporting the hopper or battery containing the filling carriers or bobbins to be transferred. Extending from the bracket 2 is the stud or fixed shaft 3 on. which is mounted the usual transferrer 4 for transferring filling carriers or bobbins from the hopper to the shuttle on call for replenishment of filling. The transferrer 4 is mounted upon the stud 3 and has a downwardly extending arm 5 to which is pivoted at 6 the usual dog 7 which is to be actuated by a-bunter 8 on the lay when filling rep enishment is efi'ected. Extending transversely of the loom is the usual transverse shaft 9 normally under the influence of yielding means such as the spring 10 for holding the-transverse shaft in its normal position. The spring 10, as shown, is connected to a hook 11 extending from the transverse shaft and connected, as usual, to the do 7, the construction being such that when t e transverse shaft 9 is rocked counter-clockwise by an form of usual. detecting mechanism, sum as a feeler, the dog 7 will be raised from its position shown in Fig. l to that of Fig. 2, where it may be engaged by the bunter 8 on the lay as the latter moves frontward after a call for replenishment of filling. The hopper or battery for containing the filled bobbins, the transferrer, and other parts described, may be of usual construction and operated in the usual manner to effect the transfer of a full filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle when filling is to be replenished.
The lay 12 is provided with the usual shuttle box 13 having an opening 14 through its bottom wall through which the filling.

Secured to the stud or fixed shaft 3 is the rearwardly extending arm 15 having at its end the yielding support 16 for engaging the tip end portion of the filling carrier in the hopper next to be transferred.
In accordance with the present invention, the filling end controller and its associated parts are adjustably secured to the fixed arm 15 and, as shown in the present instance, the filling end controller frame is connected to the arm 15 by a'bolt 17 which may be adjustably secured to the slot 18 formed in the arm 15.
The filling end controller frame comprises an upper member 19 turned downwardly at 20 and having frontwardly extending arms 21 which are connected by a spacing bar 22. Rotatably mounted in the front end portions of the arms 21 is the rock shaft 23, one end of which is provided with the depending portion 24 connected to the dog 7. In the present instance, this connection is effected by means of a plate 25 secured to the dog 7'by the bolt 26, and having a rocking mem her or disk 27 mounted thereon. Extending outwardly from the disk 27 are the pins 28 between which is engaged the depending portion 24 of the rock shaft 23', the construction being such that should the dog be turned from its normal osition indicated in Fig. 1 to its filling rep enishing position, as indicated in Fig. 2, the rock shaft 23 will be rocked in the arms 21 to position the filling end controller for engagement with 'the spent filling end as the ejected filling carrier-passes downwardly from the shuttle box during replenishment of filling.
The filling end .controller frame is provided with bearings for the movable member pf the filling end controller, and in the present instance such bearings are provided by an adjustablebracket 29 having bearings 30, through which passes the sliding bar 31 carrying the movable member 32 of the filling end controller. The bracket 29, as shown, is adjustably sec'ured to the downwardly extending portion 20 of the filling end controller frame by means of a bolt" 33 which passes through a slot 34 formed in the upper end portion of the bearing bracket 29 the rock shaft and the arm is efli'e'ctedby a telescoping member which, as shown, comprises a sleeve 35 pivotally connected to the arm 31 at 36 and into which extends the telescoping rod 37, a spring 38 being provided between the arm 31 and the frontwardly extending arm 21 of the filling end controller frame to maintain the parts in their yielding telescoping relation.
From one of the bearings 30, the rear one in the present instance, extend the bifurcated guides 39 which arev preferably formed bifurcated with curved rear end portions 40, and between the bifurcations extends the connection between the movable member 32 of the filling end controller and the sliding rod 31, as indicated at 41.
-From theconstruction thus far described it will be apparent that when the transverse shaft 9 is rocked through the detecting mechanism, usually assembled at the opposite side of the loom, the dog 7 will be turned upwardly and into its operative position, the rock shaft 23 will be rocked and the slide 31 carrying the movable member 32 of the filling end controller will be moved rearwardly and be guided in its rearward movement to properly position the movable member 32 of the filling end controller to permit the ejected filling end of the filling carrier or bobbin to pass frontwardly thereof, and as the lay moves frontward on its replenishing beat, the hunter 8 will engage the dog 7, as indicated in Fig. 3, and move the dog frontwardly, as indicated in Fig. 4, as the transferrer 4 transfers a filling carrier or bobbin from the hopper to the shuttle. Thus it will be noted that the movable member 32 of the filling end controller is so connected to the dog 7 that both its rearward and frontward movements are dictated by the movements of the dog, and the rear or movable member 32 of the filling end controller is not struck by the lay to effect its frontward movement.
The rectilinearly movable member 32 of the filling end controller is provided with a series of teeth 42 between which the filling end a leading from the shuttle box to the ejected filling carrier 7) passes when the ejected filling carrier is ejected from the shuttle. This action of course'takes place when the movable member 32 of the filling end controller is in its rear position, as in dicated in Figs. 3 and 4, and as the movable member 32 moves frontwardly during the replenishing beat-up, the filling end a be tween the shuttle and ejected filling carrier is likewise moved frontwardly between the teeth 42 of the movable member 32. v
Cooperating with the movable member 32 of the filling end controller is a fixed member 43 which, as shown, may extend from the rear bearing 30 transversely of the loom. The fixed member 43 is provided with an overhang 44 below which the teeth 42 of the,
movable member 32 extend when the movable member is moved frontwardly by the dog, the effect being that the filling end a is prevented from disengagement with the teeth about which it passes when the teeth of the movable member 32 pass beneath the overhang 44 of the fixed member.
From the construction described as one good form of the present invention, it will be noted that the movable member 32 of the filling end controller is associated with the dog of the replenishing mechanism, so that the movable member 32 will be moved rearwardly to its operative posit-ion to en-' gage the filling end a leading from the shuttle box to the ejected filling carrier when the latter is ejected from the shuttle, and will likewise be moved frontwardly by the dog as the latter is moved front'wardly and turned. by the bunter 8 on the lay during the replenishing beat-up.
\Vhen the detecting mechanism, such as a feeler, indicates or calls for a change of filling, the dog 7 is moved upwardly about its pivotal support 6 forming a connection between the dog and the transferrer, and the movable member 32 of the filling end controller is moved rearwardly a distance prescribed by the turning movement of the dog. When the dog has been engaged by the hunter 8 on the lay, as indicated in Fig. 3, the movable member will extend into the recess of the. lay below the shuttle box, so that the filling carrier to be ejected may pass frontwardly ofthe movable member 32. Since the movable member 32 is under the control of the dog and its movement is limited thereby, it will not engage the lay when in its rearward or filling end engaging position. As the lay continues its frontward movement to effect replenishment of filling. as indicated in Fig. 4, the movable member 32 of the filling end controller will be positively moved frontward by the dog so that it is always controlled in its position by the replenishing mechanism or dog, and when the dog has assumed its normal position after replenishment of filling, as indicated in Fig. l. the filling end leading from the discarded filling carrier to the shuttle will be held by the teeth of the movable member 32 of' the filling end controller under the overhang 44 of the fixed member 43 forming part of the filling end controller, so that all danger of the filling end a being carried into theshed by the shuttle is avoided and the weaving of perfect cloth is insured.
What is claimed is:
1. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a transferrer and a pivoted dog connected thereto, a frame supported from a fixed part of the 'replenishing mechanism, a sliding member mounted on said frame, a rock shaft for actuating said sliding member, and positive connections between the rock shaft and pivoteddog to effect rearward movement of the sliding member by pivotal movement of the dog on call for replenishment of filling and frontward movement of said sliding member on return of the dog to its initial position.
2. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a pivoted dog, a frame supported in front of the lay, a slide having a filling engaging portion and mounted on the frame for movement towards and from the front of the loom for withdrawing the filling end, arock shaft carried by the frame and having two arms, one of which is connected to the slide and the other of which is connected to the dog by which the dog effects the movements of the slide.
3. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a pivoted dog having pins extending therefrom, a rock shaft having an arm engaged by the pins on the dog, a slide having a filling engagin portion, and connections between the rocfi shaft and slide for moving the latter rearwardly and frontwardly on replenishment of filling.
4. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a pivoted dog having pins extending therefrom, a rock shaft having an arm engaged by the pins on the dog, a slide having a filling engaging portion, and connections between the rock shaft and slide including a telescoping member for moving the latter rearwardly and frontwardly on replenishment of filling.
5. In a loom, filling replenishing mechanism including a pivoted dog, a rock shaft mounted for rocking movement above the dog and having a depending arm engaged by a part carried by the dog for rocking the rock shaft through the movement of the (log, a slide having a filling engaging arm, and connections between the rock shaft and slide for effecting movements of the slide towards and from the lay by the dog as it is actuated on call for and during replenishment of filling.
(3. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a dog, a
rock shaft connected to the dog, a slide connected to the rock shaft and havingaspent filling engaging member provided with teeth and positlvely moved towards-and from the lay by the dog and a fixed member of the controller which is engaged by the teeth of the movable member when the latter is moved to its front position.
7. A filling end controller comprising a fixed member having an overhang and a movable member for clamping and holding the filling end, means for moving the mQvable member towards and fromthe fixed member through the replenishing mechanism, and teeth on the movable member which extend frontward of the overhang on the fixed member when said members are moved to clamping relation, and engage the filling and hold itfrom disen agement therefrom so that when the mova le memher is moved into engagement with the fixed member it will clamp the filling between said members.
8. In a filling replenishing loom, the'combination of the transferrer and dog pivotally connected thereto, a filling end controller for engaging the filling between the shuttle and discharged filling carrier, comprising a fixed member having an overhang, a movable member having teeth the points of which extend beyond the rear edge of the overhang as the two members are moved towards clamping position, and connections between the dog and movable member for actuating said member through movement of the dog.
