To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I'IENRY E. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moro, in the county of Lee and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation Hasp- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hasp locks.

The object of this invention is to provide a combination hasp lock especially adapted for barns, houses, doors on freight cars, cellars and the like and is so constructed as to provide a lock which will prevent the door being opened by unauthorized persons.

A further object of the invention is to provide a permutation hasp lock which is provided with a pivoted locking member, a casing secured to the hasp inclosing a portion of the locking member and means slidable in the casing and engaging the locking member whereby the locking member can be held in locked or unlocked position.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a hasp upon which is pivoted a locking member, a casing inclosing a portion of the locking member, means extending through the casing and cooperating with the locking member for holding the same in operative or inoperative position and means carried by the casing for alining the first named means with the cooperating means in the locking member.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a hasp of this character which will be simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figuresof the drawing.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a hasp of the usual construction made of metal or other suitable material and is pivotally connected to a door or like in the usual manner by a fastening member 2 and is adapted to cooperate with the staple 3 which is secured to a door jamb or other member 4.

The hasp l is elongated and is provided at its free end with a staple receiving opening 5 as is usual in this type of hasp. A locking member 6 is pivotally secured intermediate of its ends as at 7 to one face of the hasp 1 and has its forward end terminating into a hook 8 which is adapted to extend transversely across the staple receiving opening 5 in the hasp 1.

The locking member 6 is provided in its upper and lower longitudinal edges with openings 8 which openings have curved side walls 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The opening 8 in the lower longitudinal edge of the member 6 is located near the rear end there of and the opening 8 in the upper longitudinal edge of the member 6 is located adjacent the pivot thereof.

A substantially rectangular casing 10 is secured to the face of the hasp 1 by screws 11 or any other suitable fastening means partially inclosing the locking member 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

The rear face of the casing 10 is provided near its upper and lower longitudinal edges adjacent the opposite ends with rectangular recesses 12. The walls of the recesses are provided with elongated slots 13. The front face of the casing 10 is provided with a plurality of character marks 14 which are located at relatively spaced distances apart and have one end terminating along one edge of the slots 13. The character marks are designated 1, 2, and 3 and may be numbered in any other suitable manner, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.

A pair of locking blocks 15 comprising rectangular heads 16 having reduced shanks 17 formed integrally with one face thereof, and secured to the free ends of the shanks 17 are the rectangular slide blocks 18, which slide blocks 18 are slidably mounted in recesses 12 on the rear face of the casing 10. The shanks 17 of the members 15 are eX- tended through the slots 13 positioning the rectangular heads on the outer face of the casing 10. One face of the rectangular head 16 is tapered to a point as at 19 which point is-adapted to aline with the character marks 14 on the face of the casing 10 thus designating the position of the slide blocks in the recesses 12.

A pair of lugs 20 are removably secured to the face of the rectangular slide blocks 18 by pins 20 or other suitable fastening means, which are adapted to aline with the openings 8 in the locking member 6 thus permitting the locking member to be raised out of the staple 3 and permit the hasp to be removed therefrom.

In use, the hasp is placed over the staple 3 in the usual manner and the locking member is forced downwardly into the staple and the slide members 15 are moved to bring the lugs 20 out of registration with the openings 8 and thus the locking member is held against movement preventing the door from being opened by unauthorized persons. If it is desired to open the door, the point 19 carried by the head 16 is slid moving the blocks 18 in the recesses 12 until the lugs 20 aline with the openings in the locking member, permitting the locking member to be moved upwardly out of the staple.

What is claimed is 1. The combination with a hasp of a locking member pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends to one face of the hasp, said looking member provided in its upper and lower longitudinal edges with recesses, the side walls of which are curved, a casing secured to the hasp and partially inclosing said locking member, said casing provided in its inner face with a pair of recesses, said front wall of the casingbeing provided with slots communicating with the recesses, sliding blocks mounted in the recesses, removable lugs carried by the sliding blocks and adapted to aline with the openings in the locking member and means extending through the slots of the casing and connected to the sliding blocks for moving the lugs into and out of registration with the openings in the locking member.

2. The combination with a hasp of a looking member pivotally secured to one face of the hasp, said locking member provided in its upper and lower longitudinal edges with recesses, the walls of the recesses being curved, a casing secured to the face of the hasp and partially covering the locking member, the rear face of the casing being provided near its upper and lower longitudinal edges adjacent its opposite ends with recesses, said casing being provided with slots connnunicating with the recesses, slide blocks slidably mounted in the recesses, removable lugs carried by the slide blocks and adapted to aline with the recesses in the locking member, sliding members extending through the slots of the casing movable on the outer face of the casing and connected to the slide blocks for moving the lugs into and out of registration with the recesses in the locking members and characters on the face of the casing.
