MOSES D. KINKADE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,442, dated March 12, 1872; antedated February 22, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES D. KINKADE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking-Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bolt as attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the boltcase, showing the supplementary locking-bolt and its reactingspriug.
My invention rel ates to certain improvements in locking-bolts, which will be fully described hereafter, whereby the knob or handle of the bolt may be securely fastened when the door is bolted, thus preventing the knob from being rotated to bring it in line with the longitudinal slot at the top of the casing, which guides the bolt. This invention consists in combining a sliding supplemental bolt with a slotted rotatin g bolt-knob, as will more fully hereinafter be set forth.
A represents the casin g, in which works the bolt B, both of which may be constructed in any suitable manner. 0 is the base-plate, which is formed with a slot or recess, m, extending at right angles to the casing A. The bolt B is formed with a knob or handle, to, having a lateral projection or extension, 1), formed with a slot or recess, 0. This projection b is somewhat thinner than the main portion of the knob a to enable it to enter the recess 0 in the base-plate, where a supplementary bolt engages with it, as described hereafter. D represents a supplementary bolt, which, in the present instance, is arranged on the under side of the base-plate O, and is provided with a shank, e, and knob cl, the shank c of which is guided by and slides in a longitudinal slot, m, in the base-plate O, the knob (l serving as a means for operating the bolt. This bolt works snugly in projecting lugs f f extending from the base-plate, the lugs being formed with slots h h, which support and guide the bolt D. A reacting, coiled, or
other spring, i, is arranged between the two lugs f f, one end of said spring bearing against a shoulder, 1, formed on the bolt D, and the opposite end bearing against the lug f, thus forcing the bolt back to its original position when drawn forward to release or look the knob or handle a.
It will be seen that it is not necessary to draw back the supplementary bolt D when it is desired to lockthe knob a, as it may be formed with a beveled edge, acting somewhat similar to the latch of a door-knob, so that, by pressing the knob a, it will force back the bolt D until it coincides with the slot 0 in the lateral extension I), when it will return to its .former position through the medium of the spring 2'.
A rubber or other spring may be located in the rear of the supplementary bolt and accomplish the same result; but I prefer the first described.
It will be evident that the spring i-may be dispensed with, as the supplementary bolt D may be operated by lockin g and unlocking the bolt B. It will also be evident that the supplementary bolt and its appurtenances may be arranged on the outside of the base-p] ate in a raised case, or in any other suitable manner, without departing from the essential features of my invention.
By my improvement it is impossible for the knob or handle of the bolt B to be rotated to bring it in line with the slot in the top of the casing A, which guides and permits the same to be slided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A sliding supplemental bolt, in combination with the slotted rotating bolt-knob, substantially as described.
To the above I have signed my name this 30th day of June, 1871.
MOSES D. KINKADE.
