1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EILERT ALFRED CLEMENTS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
i will hold the hosiery,
UNDERWEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ernnn'r Amman CLEM- ENTS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwear; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to undergarments, being articularly concerned with certain constructions and improvements associated with the cuffs attached at the ends of the legs of undergarments. The primary ob ect and purpose of the invention is to provide a means associated with said cufi's at the ends of the legs of under-garments such that when hosiery of any kind is drawn over said cuffs, an additional frictional means of connection is made between the garment and the hosiery which normally such as socks or the like, from working down, it having been practically necessary heretofore to use some kind of garter or equivalent hose supporting means to hold hosiery, particularly that of short length such as socks, against this downward movement. Specifically, the invention consists in the provision of outstand- I ing spaced apart ribs applied to said ends and passing entirely around the same in substantially horizontal planes, these ribs or ridges serving to make a much greater frictional engagement with the hosiery, such as socks or the like, to hold the same in place.
' For an understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment, my invention being used inconnection therewith.
' Fig. 2 is an elevation of a fabric section from which a cuff may be made, and
3 is a section therethrough.
. L' e reference characters refer to like parts in the different views of the drawing.
There is shown a union suit 1 of underwear, though it is to be understood that the invention is applicable to the lower garment of a divided suit quite as well. To each of the legs 2 of the garment, at the lower end thereof, a cufi 3 is attached which at slightly spaced apart mtervalsis provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting ridges 4 which pass entirely around the cuff, as shown. In practice the cuff portions to be attached at the lower ends of the legs of under-garments are usually knitted in tubular form on a suitable machine which, at intervals, corresponding to the desired length of the cufi, is formed with an outstanding ridge such as indicated at 4: in Fig. 3. By proper adjustment of the cuif knitting machine, these ridges can be made at much closer intervals or as close as desired for the working of my invention. On the inner side the cuff has a smooth surface so that no ridges or projections are brought directly against the wearer. Of course it is to be understood that the formation of these outstanding spaced apart ridges may be made in a great variety of ways, it not being necessarily essential that the same shall be made on a cuff knitting machine, though such manner of knitting is one very practical and convenient. But my invention contemplates the formation of the spaced apart surrounding ridges on the cufis at the lower ends of the legs of underwear garments irrespective of the manner in which the same are formed on the cuffs and in whatever way accomplished. I
The invention is very simple but is particularly effective as has been proven by actual service. The elimination of hose supporters is accomplished thereby and the cost of manufacture of a garment equipped with my invention is practically the same as one made as heretofore, having a smooth outer surface to the leg cuffs.
I claim:
A garment having legs, and a plurality of outstanding ribs located around and one above the other a short distance and positioned in substantially parallel horizontal planes, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
