Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application filed March 14,1917. Serial No. 154,659.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH LERNOWITZ, a citizen of Rumania, and a resident of the borough of the Bronx, city of New York, county of the Bronx, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Front-Lace Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to front lace corsets.
The object of the invention is the provision of a tongue for closing the opening in a front lace corset and means whereby the said tongue may be prevented from wrinkling or whereby if wrinkled the wrinkles may be straightened out.
In the accompanyingdrawings which form a part of this application I have illustrated two forms of my invention, but it is to be understood that the drawings are for illustration only in order that the invention may be the more readily comprehended and that the invention is by no means confined to the two forms shown.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of the forms chosen for illustration showing the corset laced and as it is worn;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly broken away of the corset shown in Fig. 1 illustrating the means for fastening the tongue to the corset body; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation partly broken away illustrating a different form of means for fastening the tongue to the corset body.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the body of the corset 1 is opened in front and is provided with a tongue 2 for closing the opening. Eyes 3 3 are secured to one side of the corset body in front in the usual way and buttons or hooks 4 4: for engagement therewith are secured to a reinforced strip 5 to which the tongue is attached. On the other side of the corset opening is a series of eyelets 6 6 which together with a similar series of evelets 7 7 in strip 5 are used for lac ing the corset by means of an ordinary corset lace 8. A second strip 10 is provided on by means of a lace 13. A hore illustrated this lace is fastened at the top and bottom of the tongue and loops through two pairs of eyelets 15 15 which are located in the corset body above the strip 10. 7 V
In the form illustrated in Fig. 3 the strip 10 is omitted and two pairs of eyelets 18 18 replace the series of eyelets 12 12 in the tongue, the lace 13 extending through these eyelets and looping through the eyelets 15 15 in the corset body. Aside from this the two illustrated forms are identical.
The tongue is preferably made of gauze and reinforced by a steel 16. It is of a width such that when the corset is put on and laced it will cover the opening between the sides of the front of the corset body and when perfectly smooth it eyelets 12 12 of Figs. 1 and 2 will not be overlapped by eyelets 11 11 0f the strip 10 and in Fig. 3 the eyelets 18 18 will not be overlapped by the eyelets 15 15 of the corset body.
In considering the use of this invention it should be borne in mind that in the ordinary putting on and adjusting of a corset the buttons or hooks and eyes along the front steels of the corset are fastened together before the corset is laced. The corset when thus fastened together preferably fits the figure easily. The corset is then laced and the figure drawn to the desired contour as far as conditions permit. In this lacing of the corset the opening between the sides of the corset provided with the lacing eyelets is considerably decreased.
The same method is pursued in putting on a corset embodying my invention but as the corset is a front lace corset in lacing the corset after the buttons or hooks 4 4 and the eyes 3 3 have been fastened together it is apparent that unles means are provided whereby the looseness of the tongue can be taken up the tongue will become wrinkled and be a source not only of discomfort but of faulty appearance. To obviate this difficulty either the wearer while lacing the corset by means of the lace 8 can keep the lacing 13 taut or after the corset has been laced can straighten the tongue by means of the said lacing.
The corset is taken off in the usual mannor by loosening the lace 8 and unclasping' the buttons or hooks 4 4 and the eyes 3 3.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding 1. In a corset, thecombi-nation ofa corset body" opening in front, a tongue for closing the opening, means for lacing the corset,
means for removably connecting the tongue with one side of the corset bodyin fixedrelation-therewith; and -means for movably connecting the-tongue with the other side of thecorsetbodywhereby the tongue may bel'aterally extendedh'substantially its full width-when the corsetjs laced, substantially as described; "1 Y 2. Ina corset, the "combinationof a corset I v fiopiet' of this patentgmay be obtained for five, cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents;
and means for connecting the tongue with body opening in front, tongue for closing the, opening, eclasps having one set. of members attached :to the corset body andthe'cooperating set of members'atta'ched to the tongue, means for lacing the corset operating between the tongue and the corset body,
the corsetvbody whereby the tongue may be'laterally extended substantially its full Width When the corset is laced, substantially as described.
