CORSET.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Mrs. CHPISTINE PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corsets, and it has for its object to provide, in connection with a corset, a support for the abdomen of the wearer, which support will remain in correct position and perform its function when the wearers body assumes various attitudes.

A further object of the invention is to provide a support which can be readily fitted to different shapes and which can be adjusted to suit local conditions, and in which the corset can be worn either with or without the supporter.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a front View of a corset provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view of a modification.

Referring specifically to the drawings 6 indicates the corset as a whole, and this may be of any suitable or desired construction, preferably a corset which laces at the front. The back of the corset is provided with two vertical slits indicated at 7. These slits are spaced apart somewhat, and are preferably located at or slightly above the waist line. The edges of the slits may be strengthened by binding pieces 8 and each slit may be divided into upper and lower parts by a cross stay or stitches 9, for the purpose of holding the edges of the slits together or close to each other. The slits are preferably located between two of the steels or stays 10, so as to prevent ripping.

The abdominal supporter consists of two similar parts each part comprising a front piece 11, having several layers of material and lines of vertical stitching to give it the requisite strength, but without making it inflexible. To each section 11 is attached a pair of upper and lower straps 12 and 13 which extend through one of the slits 7, and are connected at the back to an end piece 14, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper strap 12 is attached at the upper rear edge of the front piece 11. The lower strap 13 extends diagonally across the supporter piece 11, to which it is fastened. pose of this is to prevent lateral stretching of the said piece, and by the pull on the strap 13 to cause the lower part of the supporter to fit closely under the abdomen. The two end pieces 14 of the sections are adjustably attached together at the back, and on the outside of the corset, by laces 15. The purpose of this is to permit adjustment of the supporter after the corset is closed, and also to take all direct pressure of the supporter ofi of the back of the wearer, the back part of the corset being interposed between said pieces 1 1 and the back of the wearer, by means of the outside connection. When the connecting stitches 9 are used, the strap 12 may be passed through the slit 7 below said stay or stitches, and the strap 13 above the same, in which case the supporter will be permanently attached to the corset, but by omitting the stay or connection 9 the may be removed from the corset the ends of the sections through the slit 7 The front edges of the supporter pieces 11 are connected by laces l6 engaging appropriate eyelets.

It will be noticed that the straps 12 and 13 cross each other, which gives a direct backward pull on the strap 12, and an inclined upward pull or tension on the straps 13, which insures the correct fitting of the device and the proper support of the abdomen, the tension being along lines which cross each other at an angle.

Each supporter section is or vided with buttons 17, placed on a tab 20 at the 13 under the front part of the other attached to said rear corner thereof, below the strap 13. The ends of the thigh strap 18 are attached to these buttons, for the purpose of holding the supporter in proper position and preventing it from pulling or bulging away from the groin of the wearer.

By means of the structure described, adj ustment of the abdominal supporter is independent of the corset and may be made after the corset is closed. By means of the laces l5 and 16 the supporter can be drawn as tightly as desired against the body, even after the corset is closed, and it will be understood that when the front of the corset is closed it covers the supporter at the front. The construction described does not interfere with the shape and appearance of the ordinary corset and the supporter may he applied to a corset by simply cutting slits as at 7 in the back thereof and then passing the straps 12 and 13 of the supporter through said slits.

This has the advantages due to the crossed straps and the lines of support afforded there y, and will. serve an efficient purpose, even without the back adjustment feature found in the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

T he combination of a corset having vertical slits in the back part thereof, and an abdominal supporter located within the front part of the corset, said supporter having upper and lower straps extending from each end thereof through said slits and adjustably connected together at the hack, the lower straps extending along the lower edge of the supporter, and said up er and lower straps crossing each other at an angle, whereby the lower straps, in front, are uppermost at the back.

The combination of a corset, and an abdominal supporter comprising side pieces connected together at the front, upper and lower crossed straps connected to each of said side pieces and extending rearwardly therefrom, the lower strap extending diagonally across the lower part of each of said pieces, and thigh straps one end of which is connected to the front end of said lower strap and the other end of which is connected to the rear lower corner of said side piece.
