Be it known .that l, WILLIAM E. UrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and Stateot New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Writing-Tablets, of which the following is a specication. p

My invention relates to a telephone writing tablet, and more particularly to a tablet adapted for attachment to what is generally termed a desk telephone.

The object of my invention is the provision of an attachment for telephones of this type whereby a roll of paper may be carried by the attachment and drawn over a support or table provided with means for severing portions of the paper having memorandum or notations thereon.

Another object of my invention is the provision oi' a tablet of simple construction, which is inexpensive' and durable and which 'can be quickly attached tothe pedestal of a telephone and be retained thereonv without in any manner offering inconvenience in the use of the telephone. p

The invention consists in the novel Jfeatures of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.

The tablet proper isA and comprises a flat desk portion 8 having depending flanges 9 at opposite marginal portions, said flanges being extended beyond one end of said desk portion inthe form of curved arms l0. Secured to one end of the spindle is a cir cular casing 14: in which a cord 15 is yieldingly held, said cord being secured to a spring-wound object similar to eye-glass cords used as guards, and this cord has a pencil 16 fastened thereto so that upon drawing the cord' outwardly, the necessary length is exposed topermit of making notation of conversations had over the telephone.

The desk portion 8 of the tablet has two pairs of transverse incisions formed therein between each pair of which the metal is stamped upwardly into a plane above the upper surface of said desk portion, as at 17, thus providing paper grooves underneath these upwardly stamped portions through which the paper may be passed, and with this object in view a roll of paper 18 is rotatably mounted upon the spindle 12, with a portion of the paper guided underneath the upwardly stamped portions 17, which may be said to serve/as guide members for the paper. By reason of the notches 13 openin upwardly and rearwardly and the spind e 1ying within said notches in the plane of the top surface of the desk portion 8 of said tablet, the unrolled portion` of the pa er may be taken hold of and drawn forwa'r ly at all timesl irrespective of the amount of paper remaining in rolled condition without the possibility of the rollvbecoming loosened from. its supportingarms. Moreover, rolls of paper may be quickly placed in position on the tablet, and when consumed the usual paper sleeve or core of the roll remaining after consuming the paper may be quickly and conveniently removed.

39 designates a U-shaped securing clip which straddles the pedestal of the telephonev and extends through alined openings 19 in the opposite flanges 9 of the tablet, the extremities of said U-shaped clip being threaded and extending outwardly beyond the outer flange 9 and having nuts 20 threaded thereon, said nuts being preferably thumb nuts so that the tablet can be easily removed from a telephone and again applied when desired.

In order that the flanges are not drawn toward each other when tightening the nuts 20, spacing sleeves 21 are placed between said flanges through which parallel members of said U-shaped clip are passed. This also greatly stiffens' the tablet so that a certain amount of pressure can be applied thereto while making notations on the paper passing thereover.

It is to be noted that the depending flanges 9 are each provided with a depending lug 40, these lugs being directly opposite and having a pair of the alined o enings 19 formed therein. Broadly consi ered, these depending lugs 40 form part of the flanges 19, and by arranging a pair of openings 19 in the flanges 7 through these lugs and a pair of openings 19 a distance forward of theseV lugs, one pair is spaced a greater distance from the top of the desk portion 8 than the other, and when the U-shaped securing clip 39 is passed through the two pairs of openings and embraces the pedestal of the telephone, the desk portion is inclined while the securing clip is in horizontal position, in which position it most effectively serves to secure the tablet to the pedestal of the telephone.

22'designates an index device on which the names of parties may be written who are frequently spoken to over the telephone. Said index device comprises` a casing 23 having a top wall 24, a bottom wall 25, and three edge walls 26, 27, 28. The casing thus constructed has one edge portion open and in the casing arranged to be drawn out of said open side are index cards or sheets 29 which are attached to the casing near one corner thereof by means of a pivot 30, and the successive pages or leaves are spaced apart by separators 31. Secured to the exterior of the casing by means of the pivot 30 is a spring-retained card guard 32, said guard having two members 33, 34, lying respectively against the upper and lower walls of the casing and having their outer ends connected by a cross member 35. vSurrounding lthe pivot 30 is a spring 36, one end of which is secured to one wall of the casing and its other end to the card guard, as at 37, the cards or sheets 29 and the separators therebetween having their pivot openings of a size suiiiciently large to receive said spring. Each of the cards or' sheets has finger and index tabs 38 by meansv of which they may be drawn outwardly to expose the name and telephone number of the party desired, such names being arranged according to alphabet noted upon said tabs.

The casing 23 is soldered or otherwise fastened to the flanges 9 of thetablet. Upon drawing a card or sheet out of the casing 23, the guard 32 is compelled to swing on the pivot 30 against the action of the coll spring 34, and upon releasing said card or sheet the spring compels the guard, which is in contact with the card, to force said card inwardly int'o the casing.

The separators 31 are formed of strips of metal arranged diagonally from one corner of the casing to another, as best shown in Fig. 5. In this manner the leaves are se arated from one another throughout their greatest length and freedom in action is therefore assured, there being no possibility of the edge of one leaf coming in contact with the edge or tab of another.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,-

1. A telephone tablet havin a dat desk portion provided with longitu inal dependingflanges having portions extending beyond one end of said desk portion to provide a pair of arms, said arms being notched at their outer ends, a spindle also notched near opposite ends and having its notched portions fitted into the notched outer ends of said arms to prevent lengthwise movement of said spindle, a roll of paper mounted on said spindle adapted to be unrolled over said desk portion, means to retain said unrolled portion iat against said desk portion, and means to'secure said desk portion to the pedestal of a telephone.

2. A telephone tablet adapted to be secured to the pedestal of a desk telephone and having a fiat desk portion provided with longitudinal depending anges having ortions extending beyond one end of said esk portion to provide a pair of arms, 'said flanges having two pairs of alined openings with the pair of openings nearer said arms a greater distancmfrom the top surface of said desk portion than the other pair, a spindle carried by said arms, a roll of paper mounted on said spindle and adapted to be unrolled over said desk portion, a U-shaped clip 'adapted to embrace the pedestal of the telephone and passed through said two pairs of alined openings, and nuts threaded onto the ends of said U-shaped clip.
