Description
Patented May 18, 1926.
.teatras .starts MICHAEL JAMES KASIAN, OF GfHGAGO, ILLINOIS.
.soon-MARK Ann' oLaMr.
Application filed. July 25, 1925.
My invention relates to improvements in book marks and leaf clamps, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein dcscribedwand claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is intended to holdthe pages of a book, magazine or pamphlet from turning over, while the book is open to a desired page.
A further object o-f my invention is .to provide a device of the character described which without removal from engagement With the leaves of the book may be moved laterally across the page so as to permitthe book to be closed, and which in this capacity serves as a book mark.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is Constructed of yielding material so as not to damage the pages of the book or magazine, and which will conform with books of various thicknesses.
A further object of my invention is to' provide a device o-f the character described which is simple in construction, that is durable and thoroughly practical for lthe purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specitication, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawing fori'ning part of this application, in whichM Figure 1 ,is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention, and
Figure 2 is an elevation of the book with my book mark and leaf clamp applied thereto.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a body member 1, preferably Constructed of relatively thick sheet celluloid. The body member l has a clip portion 2 at the upper end thereof, formed by bending` the body at 8 so that the portion 2 will lie over the body 1.
The portion 2 is curved outwardly at its outermost end il so that the clip may be readily slipped over a plurality of pages, such as shown at 5 of a book 8.
The clip portion 2 has a laterally extend-v ing leaf-engaging portion T which is approximately five inches 1n length, or sutilciently short to he wholly upon one leaf of Serial No. 46,151.
the book (i, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, leaving suiiicient space for the body member 1.
rI'he leaf-engaging portion 7' is curved rearwardly, as viewed in Figure 1, so as to assure its engagement with the uppermost leaf 8 of the book 6 at the opposite side from the group of leaves 5 before mentioned. I
The device is preferably manufactured from heavy sheet celluloid and is stamped therefrom prior to bending the clip portion 2 back over the body member 1. This method of manufacture greatly simplifies and cheapens the cost of production.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the Operation thereof may be readily understood. VVhen the book 6 is closed, the dcvice assumes the position shown in dotted lines in- Figure 2, and permits the person having the book to innnediately open the pages so as to find the page 8, which is presumed to be, together with the opposite page,I the pages sought for, when the device is used as a book marker.
When the pages are being read the entire Vde'vice is shifted laterally to the position shown in full lines of Figure 2 so that the EFI EFI
leaf-engaging portion 7 will contact and engage with the page 8. This construction will maintain the pages against movement in either direction without the necessity of manually holding the book pages in the position desired, which is necessary at present When reading' a book, particularly when there is a marked tendency of the pages to close.
l claim:
1. A book mark and leaf clamp of the character described comprising a body member arranged for frictional engagement with certain of the leaves of a book or the like, and a single laterally extending leaf engaging portion formed integral with the body member and curved slightly intermediate its length toward the rear of the body member.
2. A book mark and `leaf clainp of the character described comprising a body member arranged for frictional engagement with certain of the leaves of a book or the like, and a single laterally extending leaf engaging portion fornied integral with the body member and curved slightly intermediate its length toward the rear of the body member, said body member :md Ienf engaging portion being Constructed of reslent materal.
8. A book mal-k and leaf clamp of the character described comprising a body menr ber arranged for frictional engagement- With certain of the leaves of a book 01' the like, and :L single laterfllly etending leaf engaging` portion formed integrzd with the body member and curved slightlj-,f internedate its length toward the rear of the body member, said body member end said lenf enguging portion being Constructed of trnnsparent celluloid.
