Be i known that I, JAMES F. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitinsville, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Weft- Parter Devices for Weft- Replenishing Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is designed for use in those looms, for instance feeler looms, in which prior to complete exhaustion of the supply of weft upon the Weft-carrier contained in the shuttle on the lay of a loom such weftcarrier is replaced automatically by a loaded or filled reserve weft-carrier. It has relation to the weft-parter devices which are employed in such looms to part the length of old weft that extends from the selvage of the cloth through the delivery-eye of the shuttle to the old weft-carrier, so that as the said Weft-carrier falls it may clear from the shuttle the portion of the said old weft which remains connected with the old weftcarrier.
The invention, more particularly, is an improvement in weft-parter devices of a type in which the. parting-members are arranged and caused to enter the shuttle and to sever or part therein the old weft at a point between the old weft-carrier and the outside of the shuttle. especially, novel and improved means of producing the parting action of the partingmembers. Briefly stated, the invention resides in the combination with a movably mounted weft-parter device of the said type, of a cam or actuator that is mounted independently of the lay upon a convenient support in convenient proximity to the lay, and arranged and adapted to produce the parting action of the weft-parting members within an opening in the shuttle. Also, in a construction providing for certain adjustments. Also, in certain features of construction whereby during the closing of the parting-members they are caused to bear closely against each other so as to insure a proper parting action.

The weft-parting devices with which the features of the present invention are associated in the drawings are, in general, not of my invention. The said devices, therefore, will be described but briefly, except as may be required for a proper explanation of myv own invention. They are shown located at the outer side of the-disk 20forming a.
part of the rotary magazine or feeder of the replenishing mechanism and serving in practice to support the tips of a series of weftcarriers applied to the said magazine or feeder, and between the said disk 20 and the flaring disk 21 and weft-end attaching hub 22, Fig. 2. The parts 21 and 22, and a portion of the disk 20, are omitted from Fig. 1 in order that the Weft-parter details may appear more clearly in the latter. The parting members 2, 3, of the said devices normally occupy a position above that assumed by the shuttle 1 when the lay 9 is at front center with the shuttle in the shuttle-box at the replenishing side of the loom. They'are constructed, arranged, and operated to cause their lower portions to enter by a movement downward,'in an open or spread-apart condition as in Fig.1 into an opening, cavity, or chamber in the shuttle adjacent the deliveryeye of the shuttle, and in thus entering to pass down at opposite sides of the weft on its way from the weft-carrier that is contained in the shuttle to the said delivery eye, and to then close upon the said weft and part or sever the same, andto' then withdrawfrom the shuttle. In the present case, the said members are shaped as blades and adapted to be opened and closed like apair of shears. One of them is fixedly attached to their common support or carrier 4: and the other is pivoted thereto at 5. Member 3 is held normally in open position relative to member 2 by means of a contracting spiral spring 18 having one end thereof engaged with tail 3 of member 3 and the other end thereof engaged with support or carrier 4:. Their lower ends are caused to enter the shuttle between the Weft-carrier therein and the delivery-eye in time to part the old weft substantially as the old weft-carrier is ejected, preferably just a trifle ahead therebetween the old weft-carrier and the delivery-eye of the shuttle, the falling weft-carrier may take with it the free end of the old weft. The entry of the weft-parter into the shuttle cavity should take place, in other words, substantially at the same time, but usually with a slight lead in time, that the transferrer transfers a reserve weft-carrier into the shuttle and ejects from the latter the old weft-carrier previously contained therein. In the construction shown in the drawingsthe transferrer and its movements up and down again'are'utilized for the support and actuation of the weft-parter. Thus, the support or carrier 4 is shown provided with an arm or extension which is made fast by a bolt 4 and a suitable nut and washers to an arm 6, projecting from a hub 6 mounted upon an outwardly projecting sleeve-like extension of the hub 7 of the transferrer 7 The hub 6 is made fast to the said sleevelike extension of the transferrer hub by means of a clamping screw 6", so that when the transferrer is rocked downward through the engagement of the bunter 8 carried by the lay 9 with the dog or latch 10 hung to the depending transferrer arm at 11 the spent weft-parter will descend in unison with the transferrer; 1 The weft-parter' will also be raised by and with the transferrer when the latter is swung upward again through the action of the operating spring 12, surrounding the sleeve-like extension of the transferrer-hub and having one end thereof engaged with the collar '12 made fast by a clamping screw 12 upon the said extension and the other end thereof engaged with the arm 13 carrying the usual tip-support and projecting inwardly and rearwardly from the hub 13 mounted upon the outer extremity of the transferrer-supporting stud 14 and made fast upon the said stud by means of a clamping screw 15.
Referring now to my im roved means for operating the movable mem er 3 of the weft parter in proper time-relations with respect to its entranceinto the shuttle-opening, and to the ejection of the old weft-carrier so as to effect the parting of the old weft prior to the descent of the said weft-carrier: I provide an abutment or cam 16 relative to which the weft-parter members are moved in their descent and subsequent rise, and through the action of which the movable member is closed relative to the other member. The said cam 16 has an acting face which by its action, during the descent of the weft-parter, against a roll 17 mounted on a stud 17 projecting from the tail 3* of movable parting-member 3, causes the movable member to turn around its pivot 5 and thereby close relative to the opposing member 2. Spring 18 opens the movable member 3 away from the fixed member 2 as l6 having a hub 16 that is fitted upon the said stud 14 and made fast thereto by a. clamping screw 16 Fig. 1. Through mounting the arms 16 by means of a hub and clamping screw upon the stud ll, and through mounting the arm 6 by means of its hub and the clamping screw 6 upon the sleeve-like extension of the transferrer hub, convenient provision is made for adjustment to cause the weft parter members to descend to the proper extent within the shuttle-opening, and to provide-for proper clearance between the stationary upraised weft-parter members 2 and v3 and the top of the shuttle and that of the shuttlebox front as the lay swings forward and rearward, as well as for adjustment of the timing of the closing action of the weft parter members; To provide for proper clearance between the working ends of the weft-parter members 2 and 8 and the front 7 v and rear walls of the shuttle-throat,-the hole that 1s provided in the arm of weft-parter support or carrier at for the stem of the bolt ing-members they are caused to bear closely against each other so as to insure a proper partmg act1on:For the purpose of causing the parting-members to bear closely against each other during their closing, so as to in- 7 sure a proper parting action, I make provision for cramping the working portion or blade of the part-erqnember 3 toward and against the working portion orblade'of the member 2 as they closing action takes place.
To such end, the roll 17 is mounted upon the supporting stud 1'? at a point located at some distance laterally from the member 2,"at
the side of the latter opposite that at which" the member 3 is located. Hence, as roll 17 encounters and travels over the acting p'or tion of the cam 16, there is a tendency to cant or tip the member 3 transversely relative to the member 2 upon the pivotal mounting 5, so as to press the. member 3 sidewi'se against the adjacent side of the member 2, thereby insuring an efficient shearing cut.
As a feature of the general construction towhich the'invention hereinabove described is applied the extent of the opening movement of the member 3 away from the member 2'is determined by means of a stop-screw 19 applied to the support or carrier 4 and having one end of the same arranged in positionto be encountered by the backof the parter-member 3 as it opens away from the member 2. By means of the said stop-screw the proper clearance between the free extremity of member 3 and the rear wall of the shuttle-throat as the weft-parter blades or members descend into the said throat is provided for. The drawings show provisions whereby the front blade 2 may be adjusted with reference to the front wall of the shuttle-throat, the said blade being hung by its upper end upon the pivot 5, and having a forward extension that is slotted at 2 for the stem of the bolt or screw 2 which shown in Fig. 1, the lower portion of the member or blade 3 stands in such position that the starting-end extending from the leading weft-carrier in the magazine or feeder across the edges of the disks 20, 21, to the attaching hub 22, such weft-carrier being in contact with the usual fixed endstop 23, lies against the back of the said member 3, which is recurved slightly as shown in Fig. 1. Thereby the said startingend is detained and prevented from entering between the weft-parter members, so as to prevent it from being acted upon and parted or severed by the weft-parter when the latter is called into action. As the weftparter and transferrer together with the said wcft-carrier descend in unison for the purposes of the transferring and welt-parting operations, the said starting end of weft remains at the back of the member 3 while the parting of the spent weft connected with the weft-carrier previously contained in the shuttle is effected. The rise of the transferrer and weft-parter to their normal elevated position withdraws the weft parter member 3 from the said starting end, so that the latter is left free between the attaching hub 22 and the weft-carrier just inserted into the shuttle.
The point at which the old weft is severed within the shuttle may vary in practice moreor less with relation to the delivery eye. The said point may be located in the eye itself or at a point a short distance from the eye proper. In either case so small a portion of weft will extend from the out side of the shuttle into the said eye or into andthrough such eye that such portion will escape or be discharged readily from the shuttle-eye, without danger of being detained therein and carried into the shed by the next flight of the shuttle across to the other side of the loom.
In practice, means usually will be provided for insuring the clearing of the free end of the old weft from the shuttle-eye, such for instance as the swinging arm 24, Fig. 2, which in practice at the proper time is actuated so as to swing or rotate rearwardly into position to engage with the portion of old weft extending outward from the selvage of the cloth being woven to the shuttle, and then swing or rotate forwardly so' as to withdraw the outer extremity of such portion of weft from the delivery-eye of the shuttle. The arm 24 is shown as toothed or notched, to enable it to engage with the old weft with more certainty and prevent the latter from slipping downward along the said arm as it swings or rotates forwardly. This action of the arm 24 may 'be and ordinarily will be utilized to draw the said weft into the range of action of a selvage weft-parter in connection with the adjacent temple 33.
The actuation of the transferrer and weftparting device is controlled in practice by shuttle-feeler devices. The drawings show one arrangement of such devices, which, however, form no part of the present invention. They comprise a shuttle-feeler 51 that is pivoted at 52 upon the inner side of the upper portion of the fixed stand 53 of the magazine or feeder. The said shuttle-feeler is actuated through connections with the breast-beam rockshaft 34 and has the usual function of detecting failure of the shuttle to enter fully into the shuttlebox and of preventing the actuation of the transferrer in case of such failure. In addition it performs the duty, as will be apparent, of preventing the described weftparter device from being actuated in case the shuttle is out of its proper position. Thereby injury to the weft-parter blades or members, or other parts of the weftparter device, as a result of the ends of the said blades or members being caused to a branch 57 of the arm 57, the said lower arm 55 is held normally in contact with an adjustable stop constituted by a setscrew 60 carried by the'arm 57. Arm 55 is slotted at 55 and receives in its slot a projection or stud 10 from the holder of the dog or latch 10 of the transferrer. Thereby the position of the said dog or latch is controlled. Through the connections described, the shuttle-feeler and the dog or latch 10 are combined operatively with the breast-beam rockshaft 34, so that whenv the said rockshaft is rocked for the purpose of calling a transfer, the acting end of the shuttle-feeler is moved rearward ,into feeling position, and simultaneously therewith the dog or latch 10 is raised into the path of the engaging portion of the hunter 8 carried by the lay, so that as the lay comes forward the hunter may engage the dog or latch and actuate the transferrerthe shuttle-feeler will be forced forward and through the connection of the shuttle feeler with the lever 55 the latter will be turned on its pivotal connection 56 with the arm 57 so as to swing the dog or-latch 10 down out of the path of the engaging portion of the'bunter 8. Thereby the actuation of the transferrer and of the weftparter will be prevented, thus safeguarding as usual against the'bad results following from the attempt toeffect the transfer with the shuttle ,in improper position, and in addition avoiding injury to the weft-parter.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a loom, the combination with a movably-mounted weft-parter device that'is operated to cause the same to enter an opening in the shuttle, of a cam mounted independently of the lay and by which the said weftparter device is caused to part the old weft within the said opening and a support adjacent the lay for the said cam.
2. In a loom, the combination with a movably mounted weft-parter device that is 0perated to cause the same to enter an opening in the shuttle, of a fixed cam that is mounted upon the lO0m-frame and by which the said weft-parter'device is caused to part the old weft within the said opening;
8. In a weft-replenishing loom, the combination with a transferrer, and a weftparter device that is connected with said transferrer and movedin unison therewith to cause it toenter an opening in rthe shuttle, of

In a loom, the combination with a weftparter' device comprising relatively movable members adapted to cooperate in parting the old weft, and operated to cause the said members to enter an opening inthe shuttle, of a cam mounted independently of the lay and by which relative movement of the'said membersu within the said opening is produced and the old weft thereby parted and a support adjacent the lay for theusaid cam;

In a weft-replenishing loom, the combination with a transferrer, and a. weftparter device thatis actuated thereby, comprising-- relatively movable members'that are caused to enter an opening in the shuttle through the actuation by the transferrer, of. a cam mounted independently of the lay and by which relative movement of the said members within the said opening is pro duced and the old weft thereby parted and a 7 support adjacent the lay for the said cam. 90
6. In a loom, the combination with a weft-parter device comprising relatively movable members adapted to cooperate in parting the old weft, and operated to cause such members to enter an opening in the shuttle, of a spring by which said members normally are held open, a cam mounted 1ndependently of the lay and by which the said members are closed within the said opening to part the old weft therein and a support adjacent the lay for the said cam.
7. In a loom, the combination with a movably mounted weft-parter device comprising cooperating relatively movable blades and operated to cause such blades to enter an opening in the shuttle to engage with the old weft therein, of a cam engaging a laterally off-set follower with which one of said blades is provided, whereby relative movement of the blades while within the opening is produced and such blade is caused to bear closely against the opposite member during the parting action;

In a loom, the combination with a weft-parter device comprising relatively movable blades or members and a support or carrier therefor normally occupying a re tracted position with said blades or members withdrawn from the shuttle, movable to causethem to enter an opening in the shuttle tocngage and act upon the weft therein, and adjustable to provide for clearance of the blades or members within such opening,of a cam that is mounted independently of the lay, and by which relativemovement of said I blades or members is produced to part the old weft within theopening, and a support adj acent'the lay for the said cam, said cam adjustable in acc'ord with the adjustment of the" support or carriers 9. In a loom, the combination with a weftparter device comprising relatively movable parting members and a swinging arm constituting a support or carrier therefor, normally occupying a retracted position away from the shuttle and movable to cause said members to enter an opening in the shuttle and engage the weft therein, said members adjustable lengthwise of the arm to provide for proper entry and clearance within the opening, of a cam'mounted independently of the lay and by which relative movement within the opening of said members is produced to part the old weft, and a support adjacent the lay for the said cam, said cam adjustable in accord with the adjustment of the support or carrier.
10. In a weftn'eplenishing loom, the combination with the transferrer, and a weftparter device comprising an arm connected with the transferrer and relatively movable parting members carried by the said arm, movement of said arm with the transferrer at the time of a transfer causing said members to enter an opening in the shuttle and engage the weft therein, said parting members adjustable lengthwise of the arm to provide for proper entry and clearance within the opening, of a cam mounted independently of the lay and by which relative movement of said members within the opening to part the old weft is produced, and a support adjacent the lay for the said cam, said cam adjustable in accord with the adjustment of the support or carrier.
11. In a weft-replenishing loom, the combination with the transferrer and its supporting-stud, of a weft-parter device comprising relatively movable blades or members and a support or carrier therefor connected with the transferrer upon said supporting-stud and normally occupying an elevated position with said blades or members withdrawn from the shuttle, movement of the support or carrier at time of atransfer causing said blades or members to enter an opening in the shuttle, and a cam that is mounted upon a support in connection with said supporting-stud and by which relative movement of said blades or members is pro- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature f Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the commissioner of Patenti, Washington, D. 0.
