Be it known-that 1, Jonas Non'rnnor, a citizen of the United States, and a resident Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Thread Clearing and Parting Mechanism for Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description; in connection with the accompany ing drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts. i
This invention relates more particularly to looms wherein the running filling is replenished automatically, as for instance in the type of loom forming the subject matter of United States Patent No. 529940 granted to J. H. Northrop November 27 1894, a fresh supply of filling being inserted automatically in the running shuttle to take the place of the more or less exhausted filling-carrier then in the shuttle. When the latter filling-carrier is ejected it drops from the shuttle, and if there be any trailing filling it is neces sary to draw it completely out of the shuttle to prevent it from being carried back into the cloth or from fouling the fresh filling. v
A trailing filling-end will always be present in a ioeler loom, wherein filling replenishment is effected prior to complete exhaustion of the running filling, means being provided in such looms to part the old filling-end between the cloth and shuttle upon replenishment. Such a filling-end may also be present when the running filling breaks at some distance from the,
..plotcly draw the old filling-end out of the shuttle when filling is replenished, so that there will be no possibility of the old filling-end, or any part thereof,
remaining in the shuttle. l have also provided novel means to part the old filling-end in an absolutely certain and positive manner when replenishment is called for. The parting means is also heroin constructed and arranged to operate a second time to part the new fill ing-end, that is, the length of filling leading from the lilling-ieederor hopper to the cloth when the replenished shuttle has made its'first' shot after replenishment. It will be obvious that if the apparatus be used on a loom which is not of the fcclcr type thefirst operation of the parting means may not act upon the old filling-end, but the second operation of such means will act upon and part the new filling-end, which is always present after the operation of the filling-replenishing mechanism. These and other novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoincd specification and particularly pointed out-in ing-replenishing loom of the Northrop type, the fillingfeeder being shown in section, and with the replenishing mechanism and one practical embodiment of my present invention in normal position; Fig. 1 is a detail of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig.- 1, to be referred to; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the replenishing mechanism just about to effect a transfer of filling, the corresponding position of the mechanism embodying my present invention being shown; Figs. 3 and 4 are diagrammatic views showing the position of certain portions'of my novel threadcatching mechanism in successive positions, to be referred to; Fig. 5-is a front elevation of a portion of such thread-catching mechanism; Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the lay and shuttle-box at the replenishing side of the loom, with one member of the thread-catching mechanism in connection therewith; Fig. 7 is anenlarged detail in top plan view, at the replenishing side of'the 100111, and showing the novel thread-parting mechanism forming a part of this invention; Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view on the line 8--8, Fig. 7,

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the filling-feeder F to hold the reserve filling-carriers or bobbins b, the transferrer f mounted to rock on the fixed stud f to remove the filling-carriers one by one, and transfer them to the running shuttle, (of the automatically self-threading type), the controlling rock-shaft d having an attached arm d normally held depressed as Fig. l

The notcheddog m" attached to the blockm and pivotally connected at 2 with the downturned bifurcated extension f of the transierrer, 'see alsoFig. 5, the hunter 0 onthe lay to cooperate with thedog when filling-replenishment is to be effected, theshuttle feeler y fulcrumed on a short rocker-shaft y. mounted on the loom-side, and havinga lugy with which coiiperates the arm d as most clearlyifshown in Fig; 5 and the arm 3/ having a cam-slot g to cooperate with the lug m on the dog m are herein shown as substantially the same as in United States patent to Stiinpson No. 718587, dated January 13, 1903. In the present case, however, the shuttle feeler y has no other function than to feel for and ascertain whether the shuttle is or is not properly boxed in the box B when replenishment of filling is to be effected. Herein the lower end of the arm g is bent at y and loosely mounted on the rocker-shaft y, the latter having rigidly secured to it a short arm 3 adjacent and parallel to the bent end 3 referred to.
Referring to Fig. 1, the short arm 3 is adjustably secured to the arm y by a clamping bolt 4, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which can be adjusted in a segmental slot 5 in the arm y-, to adjust such arm when necessary to slightly change the movement of the dog m. A bracket 6 is provided with a hub 7 loosely mounted on the outer end of the rocker-shaft y and is adjustably connected with the bent end 3; of the arm g by a short foot S-extended from the hub 7 and clamped to the bent end y by a clamping-bolt 9, the shank of the bolt passing through an elongated slot 11, see dotted lines Fig. 1, in the bent end 3 The upper end of the bracket 6 is laterally extended at 12, see particularly Fig. 5, and at the inner end of such lateral extension is an upturned enlarged portion 13, Figs. 1 and 2, which is movable toward and from the lay in substantially a vertical plane, the top of the bracket being provided with ears 14 for a purpose to be described, and with a depending and forwardly extended part or guard 15, the relative position of the guard with relation to the ends of the extension 12 being clearly shown in Fig. 5.
When filling replenishment is to be effected and the rock-shaft d is turned in the direction of the arrow d Fig. 1, the bracket 6 and the parts carried thereby assume the position shown in Fig 2, if the shuttle is properly boxed in the box B and at such time the guard 15 forms the top of a chute or conduit through which the ejected filling-carrier is discharged toward the front of the loom, and the upright portion 13 of the bracket forms an end-guard to prevent any possibility of the ejected filling-carrier being moved in that direction toward the interior of the loom. The bottom of the chute is formed by a guide 16, secured to the casting 17' attached to the lay at the cut-out portion A thereof, suchv casting 17 corresponding substantially to the casting b in the Northrop patent No. 596448, dated December 28, 1897, and towhich reference may be had, it being understood that when a filling-carrier is ejected from the shuttle in the replenishing shuttlebox, the guide 16 will be positioned as shown in-Fig. 2.
The casting 17 is herein shown as provided at its outer end with atubular bearing 18, see Fig. 6, in which is mounted a clearer member 19, said member being shown as an elongated rod parallel to the lay, and located somewhat below the race-plate a thereof, the clearer member being bent downward at its outer end and then laterally at 20, the part 20 being extended loosely through the bearing 18. A coiled spring 21 attached at one end to the said bearing and at its other end to the portion 20 of the clearer member is so wound as to normally hold the clearer member 19 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, its outer end resting against the adjacent portion of the casting 17.. A second clearer member 22 is bent forward at each end and then at its outer end downturned at 23 to pass freely through the outer one of the ears 14 on the bracket extension 12, and the inner end of the clearer member is downturned at 24, and loosely passes through the inner ear 14, and thence downward, the part 24 at its lower end being fulcrumed at 25 in an ear 26, fixedly secured to the loom side, so that when the bracket 6 is rocked on the rocker-shaft y, (as has been described) into operative position as shown in Fig. 2, the clearer member 22 will be moved rearwardlyin a path above the clearer member 19 and into position beneath the bottom of the shuttle-box B and behind the path taken by an ejected filling-carrier. At such time, the clearer member 19 is in front of the path of the ejected filling-carrier, and this condition of affairs is shown in the diagrammatic view Fig. 3, where the ejected filling-carrier is shown at M and the old filling-end is indicated at f". The two clearer members assume the position shown in Fig. 2 just before the cooperation of the bunter O and the dog m operate the transferrer f, and as the fresh filling-carrier is inserted into the shuttle, the filling-carrier then in the shuttle is ejected through the open bottom 10 of the shuttle-box, and drops downward between the clearer members 19 and 22, and is discharged through the chute formed by the guide 16, and the overhanging guard 15. The arrows in Fig. 3 show the next movement of the clearer members, which movement obviously is in an opposite direction, so that as the lay moves back after filling-replenishment, the clearer members engage the old filling-end between the shuttie and the ejected filling-carrier at a plurality of points, and form a plurality of guides or open loops in this filling-end. The opposite movement of the clearer members after replenishment rapidly increases the length 100 of the bights, as shown in Fig.4, and the old filling-end is thereby quickly, positively and completely drawn out of the shuttle. By the formation of the oppositely pulled and increasingly lengthened bights, it will be manifest that an old filling-end of a very considerable 105 length can be effectually cleared from the shuttle, so
that there will be no chance of the filling-end being carried back and woven into the cloth or fouling with the fresh filling-end.
In afilling-replenishing loom of the feeler type, 110 the oid iilling-end is parted between the cloth. and the shuttle at the replenishing side of the loom, and I have herein shown novel parting means for that purpose, but it will beunderstood that if the filling breaks and leaves a considerable trailing length, even though the 115 loom be of the non-feeler type, the clearer mechanism herein shown will as effectually clear such old fillingend as if it is parted by means designed for thatpurpose.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I'have not attempted to illustrate 120 any portion of the thread-parting device per sr, as it would tend to confuse the drawing, but a portion of the controlling or operating connections between the replenishing mechanism and the parting means is shown in said figures and will be hereinafter referred to.
Referring now to Figs, 7, 8 and 9, I have shown a temple '1 of any suitable construction mounted on the breast-beam of the loom, the shank of the temple having the usual depending heel t to be engaged by the lay on the forward beat, and the temple shank in my 130 see,o51
free'end upon the blade 30 and maintains it yieldingly I against the cooperating blade 29, to insure the proper cutting action. The blade-carrier is provided with a depending heel 33, and is forwardly extended to present a flattened and elongated extension 34 longitudinally slotted at 35 to receive a guide-lug 36 extended laterally from the temple stand, the extension having an upturned shoulder 37 and a rigidly connected rod 38 slidable in an apertured ear 39 extended laterally from the temple stand. A spring 40 is coiled around the rod 38 between the shoulder 37 and the ear 39 to force the blade-carrier in the direction of the arrow 41, Fig. 9, when free to act. When the blade-carrier is in normal position, as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, and in full lines Fig. 10, the two blades are retracted within the housing, and are open, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the opening the blades being caused by the lug 31 striking the front end of the slot 28 in the housing. When the blade-carrier is movedrearwardly in the direction of the arrow 41, the blades will move out of the housing and in their open position, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 10, until the lug 31 strikes the rear end of the slot 28, whereupon the blade'30 will be swung upward on its pivot 30 into closed position, as shown in Fig, 11, and if the filling is caught between the open blades, the positive closing of the blades, as described will part the filling at such point. If now, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 11, and the lay beats up, apart of the latter will strike the heel 33 and will move the blade-carrier forward against the action of its spring 40,- retracting the closed blades into the housing and causing them to be opened by the cooperation of the finger 31 with the frontend of the slot 28, so that the parts will thereby be restored to the position shown in full lines Fig. 10, or as shown in Fig. 9.
1 have provided detent means to normally retain the parting means in the position shown in Figs. 7, 8, S) and 10, the detent in the present embodiment of my invention being withdrawn from operative position by or through the actuation of the replenishing mechanism. The temple stand T has a rigid, laterallyextended pin 42, behind the shoulder 37, and upon the pin is slidably mounted a detent shown as a block 43-, rigidly attached to an adjustablelink 44, 45, the
overlapped ends of the two link members being adjustably connected by clamping bolts 43, see Fig. 7, the link extending to the right from the temple stand to the bell-crank 47, 48 mounted to swing in a substantially horizontal plane, on a post 49 fixedly mount ed adjacent the filling-feeder stand, a suitable spring 49 acting upon'the bell-crank to normally maintain it in the position shown in Fig. 7, with the-detent 43 against the shoulder 37 of the-blade-carrier'.
The forward and outer end of the bell-crank 4811s dewriturned at 49 adjacent to and in front of the depending extension f a of the transierrer, see l and 2, so that when the transferrer is rocked to effect fillingreplenishment, the bell-crank will be turned in the direction of the arrow 50, Fig. 7, to pull the link 44, 45 to the right, and thereby to withdraw the detent 43 from engagement with the shoulder 37. Such withdrawal of the detent immediately releases the bladecarrier and theactuating spring 40 moves the latter from normal position to operative position, to first position the blades as in dotted lines Fig. 10, to receive between them the old filling-end, (that is the part of the filling extending from the cloth to llte shuttle in the shuttle-box B and thereafter to close the blades upon and part such filling-end as the lay goes back after replenishment. It will be understood that when replenishment is actually effected the lay is forward, and by cooperation with the heel 33 prevents the operation of the parting means until the backward swing of the lay following replenishment. The old fillingend thus parted is cleared from the shuttle by the clearing means hereinbefore described, and after replenishment the shuttle is shot across the lay, and on such first shot lays the fresh filling, and the new filling-end, viz: that part of the fresh filling extending from the hopper to the nearer edge of the cloth, is left, and I have provided means whereby on the next forward beat of the lay, .a second operation of the parting means will be effected to part this new or fresh fillingend. It will be understood by reference to the drawings that if nothing were provided to prevent it, the next forward beat of the lay would cause the bladecarrier to be moved forward, and the spring 49 would thereupon return the bell-crank 47, 48, to normal position, acting throughthe link .to return the detent 43 into position, so that there could not be two successive operations of the parting means. By means new to be described, however, .I retard the restoration of the parting means to normal or inoperative position, and
during such retarded period the lay acts to-cause a second parting operation, which operates to part the fresh filling-end. An upturned and rearwardly extended finger 51 is formed on a slotted plate 51 which rests upon the member 44 of the link, and is clamped thereto by bolts 46, and the said finger is normally at the left of a retarding member 52, see Fig. 7, and in the present embodiment of my invention, I have shown this retarding member as a prolongation of the upper end of the vibrating actuator or weft-hammer.W of the filling-detector or fork w at the right hand side of the loom, the. usual filling detector at the left hand side not being shown. The vibrator W is at its extreme rea ward position, and is just about to move forward when theshuttle is picked across to'the replenishing side of the loom, so that if the fork to detects filling absence on that pick, the fork tailwill cooperate with the hook w and a predetermined change in the operationof the loomwill be effected-inwell-known manner common to double-fork looms.
When the vibrator orweft-hammer is in its rearmost position, the retarding device 52 is-beyond the rear end of the finger 51, sothat the operation of the replenishing mechanism is free to withdraw the detent 43 and thereupon the finger 51 is moved to the right of the path of movement of the retarding device 52, viewing.
Fig. 7 and the retarding device will be moved llQlWal'd' site side, before the return'of the replenishing mechanism to normal position has released the bell-crank 47, 48, and consequently as the weft-hammer W moveslforward, it will wipe over the left-hand face of the finger 5 and will thereby prevent the return of the detent'43 to operative position for the time being. Now the fresh .filling having been shot across, the fresh filling-end is present between the cloth and the filling-feeder, and as the lay beats up, it engages the heel 33 of the blade-carrier, the parts thenbeing in the position shown in Fig. 11, and restores the partingmechanism to the condition shown in full lines Fig. 10. The fresh filling is heater in, and as the lay thereafter swings back, the spring operates to project the blades in open position, see dotted lines Fig. 1G, to receive between them the fresh filling-end, and as the .lug 31 hits the rear end of the slot 38, the blades will be closed upon and will part the fresh filling-end. By this time, however, the vibrator or weft-hammer W has again assumed its rearmost position, releasing the finger 5l'and the detent, which latter by theaction of the spring 49 will press against the side of the shoulder 37. When, however, the next forward beat of the layengages the heel 33,- the blade-carrier and shoulder 37 will be moved forward, carrying the shoulder beyond the detent and the latter snaps into place in operative position, shown in Fig 7, and as the lay swings back, the shoulder 37 brings up against the detent, and the parting mechanism is retained in inoperative position with the blades retracted, until the next replenishment of filling'is called for. When the partingmechanism is in its normal position, the two heels 33 and t are so positioned with relation to each other as to be practically engaged simultaneously on the beat up of the lay, so that the temple is moved forward, and
- the parting means bodily with'it, the temple shank sliding inthe stand T in usual manner, but as the parting means moves forward with the temple, the blades remain retracted within the housing, andhence ,cannot interfere with the filling, when the shuttle is boxed at the replenishing side of the loom and the loom is r unning properly. The adjustment of the two part link 44, 45, is provided to permit sidewise adjustment of the temple according to the width of the cloth, and for adjustment of the finger'5 1 which cooperates with the retarding device 52.
So far as the device 52 is concerned, it is manifest that it need riot be a part of the weft-hammer, as any vibrating member timed to vibrate properly. will operate in the same manner, but in the case of a doublefork loom, the weft-hammer of the'right-hand fork affords at once a proper and very convenient retarding device to operate as has been described.
When the detent is withdrawn to permit the spring 40 to operate the parting means, the rearward movement of the blade-carrier 34;is limited by engagement of the shoulder 37 with the pin 42 on the temple stand.
In looms wherein the shuttle-feeler is provided with a thread-cutter a peculiar operation sometimes occurs, and'gives rise to a blemish in the cloth technically termed an Aiimann stripe.
The feeler thread-cutter sometimes operates to cut the filling at a time-when the shuttle is not fully boxed at the replenishing sideof the loom, the engagement of the shuttle by the feeler at the same time preventing a change of filling. As a result the shuttle is picked to the shipper side of' the loom, the trailing thread catches on at that side and the weaving goes on as before, leaving a miss-pick nearly the entire width of the cloth.
It will be seen that in the present invention there is only one thread-cutting device, and as it can only operate after a transfer of filling is effected there is no possibility of such a stripe as referred to being made in the cloth. Should a change of filling be called for and engagement of the shuttle-feeler with the improperly boxed shuttle prevents the change then there is no operation of the thread-cutter, and there can be none until the change of filling is effected.
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement herein shown and described, as the same may be modified or varied in many particulars by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a loom, a lay, and mechanism to automatically replenish the filling in the running shuttle, combined with means to engage and draw the old filling-end out of the shuttle, said means including a member movable with the the lay and a member independent of the lay temporarily positioned back of the path of the ejected filling-carrier andbelow the shuttle, said members oppositely engaging the old filllng-end and forming a plurality of bights therein as saidmembers move in opposite directions upon backward movement of the lay following filling replenishment.
2. In a loom, a lay, and mechanism to automatically replenish the filling in the running shuttle, combined with means to engage and draw the old filling-end out of the shuttle, said means including a'member movable with the lay, and in front of the path of an ejected filling-carrier, a second member temporarily moved into position back of such path when filling is to be replenished, said members engaging the old filling-end at a plurality of points between the shuttle and the ejected filling-carrier, and means to govern the movement of the second member, relative movement of said members following a change of fillin pulling the filling-end in opposite directions and thereby drawing it out of the shuttle.
3. In a loom, a lay, and mechanism to automatically replenish the filling in the running shuttle, combined with means to engage and draw the old filling-end out of the shuttle, said means including two members oppositely movable after filling replenishment and temporarily positioned to permit the ejected filling-carrier to pass between them, and mechanism to thereafter cause said members to form. a plurality of bights in and thereby 'draw the old filling-end out of the shuttle.
4. In a loom, a lay, and mechanism to automatically replenish the filling in the running shuttle, combined with means to engage and draw -the old filling-end out of the shuttle, said means including a member movable with the lay, and in'front of the path of an ejected filling-carrier, a second member temporarily moved into position back of such path when filling is to be replenished, said members engaging the old filling-end at a plurality of points between the shuttle and the ejected filling-carrier, and means actuated by the replenishing mechanism uponoperation thereof to govern the movement of the second member into and out of operative position.

7: In a loom,'in combination, a lay, automatic filling replenishing mechanism, and means governed thereby to clear the shuttle of the old filling-end, saidmeans inclnd ing a clearer member mounted on the lay in front of the path of the ejected filling-carrier, a second clearer member movable toward and from the lay and into position, when filling is replenished, back of the path of the ejected fillingcarrier, and a fixed fulcrumon which said second member ismounted.
8. In a loom, in combination, 'a lay, automatic fillingrepienishing mechanism, and means to automatically clear the shuttle of the old filling-end, said means including a member movable toward the lay in a path below the shuttie and across the path of an ejected filling-carrier to a point behind the latter during filling replenishment, to engage the oldfilling end behind the same, and a second member mounted independently of the first-named member to engage the old filling-end in front of the same;
9. In aloom, in combination, a layJngtomatic'filling-replenishing mechanism, a normally quiescent clearer member, a substantially horizontal, fixed fulcrum on which said member is movable into operative position below the shuttie and back of the path of an ejected filling-carrier, a second clearer member mounted on the lay in front of the path of the ejected filling-carrier and movable in a path below that of the first-named member, and operating connections between the latter and 'the replenishing mechanism, whereby the said first-named member is caused to engage the old filling-end between the shuttle and the ejected filling-carrier and draw a bight thereof forward as the second member engages and draws a second bight in the filling-end rearward as the lay moves back after filling requiescent clearer member, to cause the latter to engage the old filling-end between the shuttle and the ejected fillingcarrier and thereafter draw the filling-end forward over the clearer member on the lay and. also to position the' guard above the guide, to form a directing chute for the discharge of the ejected filling-carrier.
1l. In a: loom,- in combination,, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, and automatic means to engage the old filling-end simultaneously at a plurality of separated points between the ejected filling-carrier and the shuttle and draw the filling-end out of the shuttle.
-12. In a. loom, in combination, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, and automatic means to engage and form a plurality of bights in the old filling-end between the ejected filling-carrier and the shuttle, to draw the filling-end out of the shuttle.
14. Ina loom, in c0mblnati0n, automatic filling-revpienishing mechanism, and means actuatedby said mech- V .anlsm upon operation thereof to engage the old filling-end at a plurality of points between the shuttle and the ejected filling-carrier and rapidly separate the points of engagement t0, draw the filling'-end-out of the shuttle.
15. In a loom, in combination, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, and means actuated by said mech- "anism upon operation thereof to engage and form apinrality of bights in the old filling-end between the shuttle ,and the ejected filling-carrier and rapidly increase :the length of thelbights to draw suchfllling end out-of the shuttle. 16. In a'loom, in combination, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, means to part the old filling-between the cloth'and shuttle upon filling replenishment, ,and automatic means to, engage and form a plnrality of bights in the sparted filling'end'between the ejected fillingcarrier and the shuttlefto drawthe filling-end quickly and positively out of the shnttle.
-17. In a loom automatic' filling-replenishing mechanism, and a lay having a shuttle-box provided with a dis chargeopening for an ejected filling-carrier, combined with an elongated clearer member mounted on the lay below and in front of said opening, and means operated by action of the"; replenishing mechanism'to engage the old filling-end between the shuttle and the ejected fillingcarrier and draw the same forward over the clearer memher and opt of the shuttle.
' 18 In a loom, automatic. filling-replenishing mechanism, and a lay having a shuttle-box provided with a dis charge opening for an ejected filling-carrier, combined with. an elongated clearer member mounted on the lay below' and in frontof said opening, a second elongated clearer member independent of the lay and movable in parallellism' tothe member on. the lay, and means to *move the second member into operative position upon filllug replenishment, to permit the ejected filling-carrier to pass between the clearer members, movement of the latter thereafter engaging and pulling the old filling-end in op- .posite directions to draw it quickly and positively out of ing-endat a. plurality of points between the sl1uttle and the ejected filling-carrier and clear the filling-end from the shuttle, and operating connections between the replenishing mechanism and said parting and clearing means.
20. In a loom, in combination, automatic filling-replenlshing mechanism, means to engage the old filling-end between the shuttle and the ejected filling-carrier and draw it out of the shuttle, a lay, and means modnted independently of the lay and controlled by the operation of the lay and by the replenishing mechanism to part the old filling-end adjacent the cloth upon filling-replenish ment and to part the new filling-end immediately after the new fillinghas been laid.
21. In a'loom, in combination, mechanism to replenish automatically-the runningshuttle with filling, a shuttlefeeler to prevent theoperation of said mechanism when the shuttleis improperly positioned for replenishment, a device mounted independently of the shuttle-feeler to part the filling at'th'e replenishing side of the loom, and means to cause said device to act only when the shuttle is replenished with filling.
