Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed March 23,1917. Serial No. 153,919.
To all whom it may concern: v
Beit known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of C ok and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Yokes for 1s a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
My invention relates toimprovements in draft yokes for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a dimple and strong connection between the draft yoke and the draw bar.
In the drawings forming a part of this. specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is across section, taken on line 22 of Fig. 3 is a cross section, taken on tive view of the lower cap.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral indicates a'goke strap of a usual. U-shaped form and a a ted to urround a draft gear, as will be rea ily understood, The numeral 11 indicates a draw bar, the same being pic vided with the usual pp r and lower shoulders 13 and 14, respectively. The yoke strap in its u er and lower limbs 15 and 16, respectively, is vertically perforated near its forward ends with the usual rivet holes 17-17. 'An upper cap 18 is associated with the upper limb 16, the said upper cap comprisin a plate 19 provided on either side with t e angular flanges 20-20 adapted to extend along the, sides of the forward end of the yoke limb 15. .The said plate,19 forms a head. for the referably integral bolt '22, or, if preferred {bolts 22-22, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the said bolts extending at their opposite ends through the perforations 17 in the lower limb 16 of the yoke strap and through suitable perforations 24*24 provided n the lower cap 25. The said lower cap 25 comrises a plate'26 with the angular side plates 57, and each of said caps, the upper and lower, is providedsne'ar its forward ends with the inturnedflanges 30.
3 The said flanges 30. are, except as hereinafter described, spaced apart from the for-- ward-ends of the, yoke limbs 15 and 16,]as,
indicated at the numerals 3131 in Fig. 1 of the drawmgs. This spacing is provided in order that roughened yoke ends or irregular spacing of the perforations in the yoke in reference to said ends may not prevent the 1 easy assembling of the draw'bar yoke and 36],) near their yoke caps. The saidflanges inner ends, are provided with a utments or shoulders 37 which are adaptedto engage the draw bar shoulders 13. By reason of the spacing, as indicated at 31, and as above described, a direct abutment betwen'the said shoulders 37 and the draw bar shoulders is insured.
It will also be noted that by, reason of the construction of the caps having shoulders engaging the draw bar shoulders along the nner faces of the yoke limbs and plates along the outer faces of the yoke limbs, the bolts, or any equivalents thereof that may be employed, are placed in double shear at each end thereof.
The said bolts as shown in' the drawings, are provided with suitable threads 39' at their ends andnuts 40 and with means, as
for instance, the cotters 41, to prevent their accidental displacement from the bolts.
ing shoulders and a yoke strap, of connecting means passing through same, and ca s engaging said connecting means along t e outer faces of the yoke. strap and engaging the shoulders of the draw bar along the inner faces of the yoke strap, the said caps be ulg spaced apart from the ends of the yoke 5 ape '3. The combination withadraw her hav ing u perand'lower transversely extendin shoul ers and provided with rivet holes, 0 -a;yoke 'havin rivet; holesjalined with the rivet holes of e draw but", u per and lower caps 'fitting'over theeiids of t e arms of the c, said caps having shouldered engagfment with the transverse shoulders o t e draw bar, and means, extending through the alined holes of the yoke and draw bar, detaohably clamping said caps in position.
a. The combination with a shouldered draw bar and yoke strap having the usual alined rivet receiving holes, of devices for detachably eonneotin the draw bar and yoke, said devices inc uding a pair of caps, each cap having a horizontal wall, a vertical transverse wall, and spaced vertical side 10 walls, and means extendin from one cap to the other cap through sal alined rivet reeeiving holes, said means detachably holding I said caps in position.
In witness that I claim the fore oing L15 JOHN 'F. OCONNOR.
