pec ca i of Batters. Patent Patented Aug. 12,1913.
epplicationzfll ed August 7, I912. fiarial fio. 713,754;
To an whom it may concern:
" Be it known. that I, Gnnnnns E. Dam,
a citizen of the United States, residingin;
without the use of rivets, keys, or similar l t e ferring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horizontal section of a railway raft rigging embodying my invention. Fi vie w of one of the halves of the draft yoke.
In drawings, 4, 4; are the draft or center sills or portions of the car frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 5 an end sill, 6 a bufier block, 7, the draw bar carry iron, 8 the draw bar, 9 the draft yoke, 10 the compression resisting member within the yoke, 11 and 12, the front and rear followers respectively, 13, the tie plate, 14, 1 1 the stop members secured to the'center sills and provided with theshoulders, 15, 15 forming stops for the front follower 11, and the shoulders 16, 16 forming stops for the rear follower 12.
The draw bar 8 is provided with the usual shoulders 17, 17 which are engaged by the shoulders 18, 18 at the forward end of the yoke 9. Yoke 9 consists. of two U members 19 and 19 in parallel arrangement side by side, each of said members consisting of an .upper strap 20 and lower strap 21 joined together at the rear end by the member 22 and at the forward end with the lateral flange 23, The shoulders 18 are formed by the inturning of the forward ends of the straps 2O and 21." The flanges 23 form between them and the forward portions of the straps 20 and 21 a boxlike opening within which the butt 24 of thedraw bar 8 is retained when the gear is in normal position. The flanges 23 are fiaredinwardly as'illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings so that on 2 is a side elevation, and Flg. 3, a plan .,l,ater.al movement of the draw bar the p otal p'oi nt inthednaw. bar s length "5 at the ;forward end of the yoke, as indicated by numeral 25 in Fig. 1. The members 19 and 19 are hinged together at their rear ends. each having a perforated flange 26, the said flanges being fastened together preferably by the bolt 27 provided with the nut 28. In applying the yoke to the draw bar the yoke is opened and slipped over the butt of the draw bar from the sides, the followers and compression resisting member placed within the yoke, and all is then put in position between the center sills and sustained therein by any suitable means, preferably the tie plate 13. When in position between the center sills, the shoulders 15, 15, between which the forward portion of the yoke reciprocates, prevent the spreading of the two members 19 and 19 which thus see cures the draw bar within the hollow boxlike opening of the head of the yoke. On rearward movement of the draw bar the same directly engages the follower 11 and on forward movement of the draw bar, the shoulders 17 of the same engage the shoulders 18 of the yoke.
I claim 1. A separable two-part yoke having a hooded forward end provided with shoulders, a draw bar having co-acting shoulders engaging the shoulders of the yoke, cheek platesat either side of the voke adapted to engage said head and to hold the yoke against displacement from the draw bar.
2. In a device of the class described, a
, said cheek plates being adapted to engage the said lateral plates and hold the yoke against displacement from the draw bar.
3. In a device of the class described, draft sills, stop memberssecured thereto, a draw bar provided with shoulders, a separable two-part draft yoke comprisingtwo U- shaped members, said members ng provided with shoulders engaging the shonl ders of the draw; bar, each U-shaped'inemher being provided at its forward end with a lateral plate'joining the free ends of the separable two-part yoke providedat its forii -shaped member together, the stop members being arranged at either side of said lateral plates and adapted to engage the some to hold the yoke against displacement from the draw bar.
4. In a device of the class described, draft sills, shoulders on said sills, a yoke comprising two lJ-sheped members arranged side by side, said yoke having a hooded for- 10 Ward end provided with shoulders, a draw bar having oo-acting shoulders enghgin the shoulders of the yoke, the shoulders of the sills being adapted to engage the said head to hold the yoke against displacement from the draw bar.
