TANDEM SPRING DBAFT-RIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CABS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,513.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OCennon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tandem Sprmg Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tandem spring draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide an (-flicient means for securing follower supporting plates to tandem draft rigging side plates.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevatioi i of a draft rigging embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a. cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets; Fig. l is a view taken at the center post of a tandem draft rigging side plate showing a modification.
in the drawings forming a part of this specification, the numeral 5 indicates center sills or stop members, being the part of the car underframe to which the draft rigging is applied. The side plates (sometimes called side castings, or stop castings, or check plates) 6 6 are secured to the draft members by suitable means, as, for instance, the rivets i'--T. Each side casting comprises a plate having the front post 8 forming the front stop shoulder D, the middle post 10 forming the front middle stop shoulder 11 and rear middle stop shoulder 12, a rear post 13 forming the rear stop shoulder let. The plate is also provided with the front and rear limiting stops 15 and .16, respectively. Mounted between the side plates are the front and rear compression resisting devices 18 and 19. respectively, each compris ing a pair of followers JO-20 and the interposed springs 21. The yoke 22 secures the compression resisting devices to the drawbar Eacl. casting is provided with an upper guide flange 25 and a lower follower supporting plate 26. Each stop casting is provided along its lower portion with a horizontal flange 27, the said flanges being provided at the main posts 9, 10 and 13 with vertical perforations 28, each for the passage of the shank 29 of a bracket 30. The
said vertical perforations 28 open laterally as at 3l-31, each to permit the lateral insertion of a bracket 30. The said lateral openings are constricted at their lower portions 32, and are wider at their upper portions the said upper portions being adapted to permit the lateral insertion and removal of the head 34 of the bracket 30, and the lower constricted portion is adapted for the lateral passage of the shank 2.) of the bracket 30. Each of said brackets is provided with a .lougihulinal perforation 35 for the passage of the follower supporting plate :26. The upper or wider portion 33 of each of said lateral openings is snlli- (iicntly extended vertically to permit the transverse insertion of the head 34 of the bracket 30, and when inserted the said bracket is adapted to be forced downwardly until the shoulder 36 thereof is engaged against the shoulder 37 provided upon the casting. and when in this position the upper edge 37 of the slot 35 in the bracket is substantially in alinemenl with the lower faces of the posts 8, 10 and 14 of the side casting. The said brackets when inserted are adapted to receive the follower supporting [)lilll' 26 which is threaded through all of said brackets, and when in its follower supporting position is prevented against accidental displacement by means of the head 39 pro vided on one end thereof, and securing means, as, for instance, the cotter ll) provided in the other end thereof.
It will be observed that the use of those brackets dispenses with the necessity of long bolts extending through the side plate vertically, which tends to weaken the same. permits the ready and easy removal of the follower supporting plales and of the braokets, and permits such removal and replacclnont when the other parts of the draft. rigging, including the springs and l'ollowers, are in thcir assembled posilion in the draft rigging.
It will also he observed that the space between the transverse flanges 4-1 of the side casting and the lower flange 27 is very small, and that my device permits the securing of the follower supporting straps to the casting without cutting or otherwise weakening the flange 41.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, a modified form of means for securing the follower supporting strap in the brackets is shown.
In @aid figure the ninneral 42 indicates the i-vntrrl nri -in'pni-it. qt aa r tHliilt Qcfl i tlMi upper flange. -t-l the? reat iiil inhner iaiit' fl'i-ll tl'wflf 4 the front intrrnnaliatn t'nllower, 46 the t'nllnwer nu purtving strap, 47 the d0w l ia rd ly and limtiirally tipen i'iig Slot in the bet-- lnni iii the post 42, and 48 a tapered key, the follower supporting xtrap 4t, pagieing thrnngh the prrl'nration 49 in the at, and, is at an adjacent point (if its passage prnvidi-d aith an oblique face 50 against \\'lii('ll the edge 51 01' the tapered key 48 en pages. The said tapered key is employed at'tefi the fellower supporting strapiisin place in the perforation 49 in the bracket fur dririiig the follower supporting plate intn uluso engagement with the bottom of the pimt and for holding the said strap within the bracket, The tapered key is htt'tllt'ti against accidental removal h tllt tranxvt-rsv (Uttt'iw U1 pin 3'3 pained tlit't'tthrough.
