To all wh m it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. DONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sea- Cock's, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to supply or inlet sea cocks.
The essential objects of my invention are to clean and clear the strainer plate of obstructions and accumulations; to effect this end from the interior of the boat rather than from a position outside the hull; and to effect these objects in a simple, effective, and inexpensive structure.
To the above and related ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,

Fig. 4, a section of the retaining plate and adjacent parts on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5, a section on line 55 of Fig. 2. Like reference characters indicate like parts through the views.
Herein the sea cock is shown applied to a submerged portion of the hull or skin 6 of'a ship. The shown structure of the skin is not exclusive, as the hull may be of any usual detailed construction. The inletopening 7 through the skin has the usual lead lining sleeve or thimble 8 with .outturned en'd flanges 9. Resting on the skin is the base or attaching flange 10 of a valve casing 11 having in the present instance a slightly conical inner face or valve seat 12. The casing wall has an opening 13 whence extends an in clined branch or outlet 14 provided with an external thread 15 to engage the thread 16 of a union 17 which in turn engages a cou pling 18 for the remainder ofthe supply pipe, not shown. The supply pipe, of which the parts 14 and 18 constitute a portion, leads to the pump. Rotatable in the seat '12 is a hollow conical valve 19 with a lateral opening 20 adapted to register with the opening 13. Upon the top of the body 19 is Specification of Letters Patent. a hub 23 provided with an axial bore 24. The diameter of the hub atits bottom is less than that of the body 19 forming shoulder 26 upon which rests a retaining plate 27 having lugs 28 registering with lugs 29 on the casing. The lugs 28 and 29 are provided re spectively with holes 30 and threaded perforations 31. Screws 33 loose in the holes 30 engage in the threaded perforations. The hub is provided intermediate its length with a polygonal face 35, and its upper end or stem has an external thread 36 to engage an internal thread 37 on a hollow nut 38 which retains packing material 39 and forms a stufling box. A box wrench has a handle 41 and head 42 whosepolygonal opening 43 receives the face 35. This wrench is employed to oscillate the valve 19.
Rotatably mounted in the bore 24 of the hub 23lis a spindle 45 extending through the opening 7 and of reduced diameter near its lower end, as at 46, to form a shoulder'47. Fast to the lower end of the spindle is a radial arm 49 provided with beveled lateral faces 50 to form cutting edges v51 at each side of its broad bearing face 52. The portion 46 of the spindle is loose in a central opening 54 in a strainer plate 55 against which the shoulder 47 slidably abuts; This plate has circular series of perforations 57, which series, are concentric with the opening 54. These perforations are frustoconical, so that their ends at, the outer face of the plate are of less diameter than their inner ends.
Upon the top of the spindle is a hand wheel or handle 58 by means of which the operator within the boat may rotate the spindle and thus swing the scraper blade 4-9 in a circular path over and in contact with the outer face of the plate 55, whereby edges 51 sever and remove therefrom all adhesions and accumulations.
The plate 55 may be fixed to'the skin 6 in any convenient manner. In the present instance a plurality of holes 59 inthe flange 10 correspond with countersunk holes 60 in the plate 55. In the holes 60 are the tapered heads 61 of bolts 62 which traverse passages 64 in the skin and the holes'59, and which carry the nuts 65. The plate 55 is furthermore seated in cavity 66 in the skin in order that its outer face may be flush with the latter. V
The use of the handle 58 for rotating the spindle is obviously not imperative, as a wrench may be employed for that purpose, but is less convenient.
The stuffing box renders the device water tight.
I claim 1. In a sea cock, the combination with the valve and valve casing of a rotatable spindlemounted in the valve within the casing, a strainer plate loose on the spindle, and a scraper arm fast on the spindle slidably engaging the plate.
2. In a sea cook, the combination of a valve casing, a rotary valve seated in the casing, a hub on the valve, a'spindle rotatably mounted in the hub, means on the hub for rotating the valve independently of the spindle, a strainer plate loose on the spindle, and a scraper arm fast on the spindle slidably engaging the plate.
3. In a sea cock,'the combination of a valve casing, a valve seated in the casing, a
hub on the valve, a spindle rotatably mount-.
ed in the hub, a stuffing box on the hub around the spindle, a strainer plate loosely engaging the spindle, and a scraper arm fast on the spindle engaging the plate.
4. In a sea cook, the combination of a valve casing, a valve seated in casing, a hub on the valve, a spindle rotatably mounted in the hub extending below the valve casing, a strainer plate rotatably mounted on the spindle, a shoulder on the spindle abutting against the plate, and a scraper arm fast to the spindle engaging the strainer plate opposite the shoulder.
5. In a sea cook, the combination of a valve casing, a valve seated. in the casing, a hub on the valve, a retaining plate loose on the hub above the casing, screws in the plate engaging the casing, a spindle rotatably mounted in the hub, a strainer plate on the spindle below the casing, and a scraper arm on the spindle engaging the strainer plate.
6. In a sea cock, the combination of a valve casing, a rotary valve seated in the casing, a hub on the valve, a polygonal shoulder 011 the hub adapted to receive a wrench, a spindle rotatably mounted in the hub, a strainer plate on the spindle below the casing and a scraper arm on the spindle adjacent the plate.

9. In a sea cook, the combination of a valve casing, a valve in the casing, a rotatable spindle mounted in thev valve, a
strainer plate loose on the spindle below the casing provided w1th frustoconical perforations whose lesser diameters are at the lower face of the plate, and a scraper arm fast to the spindle provided with a cutting edge slidably engaging the lower face of the plate.-
10. In a sea cook, the combination of a valve casing, a flange on the bottom of the casing provided withfholes, a valve in the casing, a rotatable spindle in the valve extending below the casing, a strainer plate loosely mounted on the spindle provided with marginal holes in alinement with the first holes, a scraper arm on the spindle ,adjacent' the plate, and bolts in the holesof both plates. r
11. In combination with a skin of a ship provided with a hole below the water line, a strainer plate fast to the exterior of the skin-over the hole, a valve casing fast to the interior of the skin and inclosing the hole,
a rotary spindle mounted within the casing and journaled in the plate, and a scraper arm fast to the spindle slidably engaging the strainer plate.
