STOP OR CURB BOX.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,102, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed October 30, 1885. Serial No. 181,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER S. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements inStop or Curb Boxes, of which the following is aspecification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to stop or curb boxes arranged to be applied along the curb of street-pavements to cover and connect with the stop-cock which controls the supply of water or gas to each dwelling-house.
An experience of many yearshas enabled me 1 to become acquainted with the disadvantages of the present form of box, which soon fills up not only by stones and dirt from the top, but by mud and water running in and then drying out, so as to leave quite a depth of solid earth in the bottom of the box, making a serious obstruction in the way of getting at the head of the stop-cock when it is desired to turn on or shut ofi' the water.
This objection I overcome by the present improvements, which consist in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the box, showing how it fits over the stopcock. Fig. 2 is a detached view of a portion of the key. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the triangular-headed bolt, and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the handle at the upper end of the valve-rod.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the casing of the stop-box, comprising two sections, B B, the upper one of which has its lower end reduced so as to telescope within the lower section, this arrangement providing for the extension of the sections to correspond with the depth at which the water or gas pipes are laid. The lower section, B, is enlarged 45 or bulged outward at its lower end, as at a, to
receivethe stop-cock O, the water-pipe passing through the opening a,made in the side of the enlarged chamber a. The bottom of the section B is open and provided with a flange,

In the lower end of the upper section, B, is
provided an opening, a, which forms a seat for the valve D, the latter comprising the disks or plate 01, (smaller in diameter than the opening 0,) the body 0 formed with an annular flange, f, and a rubber packing, g, perforated to slip over the flange. The lower end of the valve-rod E is threaded and passes through the body 6 and plate (I, a nut, h, being located on the end of the rod,so as to bind the plated against the flange f and also retain the rubber packing in place. A stop or nut, z, is located on the valve-rod above the body 6, so as to hold the latter from upward movement. The upper end of the valve-rodis headed, and to the same is swiveled the handle G. Arcshaped lugs j are cast on the interior face of the upper section, B, at points diametrically opposite each other, and form stops for the handle when the valve is closed down.
In the top bar of the handle G is provided a circular swell or enlargement, 70, having a central opening for the passage of the bolt H, the latter being threaded on its lower end to screw through a threaded passage of the 7 5 enlargement. Above the enlargement and around its central opening the handle G is formed with a triangular projection, k, which is perforated for the passage of the bolt H, the latter passing through a central opening of the cover I, and having a triangular-shaped head, m, on its upper end. The cover is grooved around its lower edge to receive the upper edge of the section B of the box, and is depressed at the top to receive the hinged supplemental cap J flush within the same. This cap normally closes the depressed portion of the cover over the head at of the bolt, so as to prevent dirt and other foreign matter from accumulating over the head, which would cause 0 the bolt H to become rusty and work hard. The operation of my invention is as follows: The key, a portion of which is shown in Fig. 2, has a triangular recess at its lower end to receive the triangular head m of the bolt H. 5 This recess in the key is also adapted to receive the projection is of the handle and the projection on the stop-cock, and thus the key is to be employed in turning both the bolt H, the handle G, and the stop-cock. The valve D on the lower end of the rod E is made watertight by the packing g, and is held down on its seat by the handle G fitting under the stoplugsj. The bolt H being connected to the cover I, holds the latter down rigidly in place. By turning the bolt H with the key, as described, the bolt may be withdrawn and the cover removed. hen this is done, the key is used to give the handle G a quarter turn until it is thrown out of engagement with the stop-lugsj. The handle G and valve-rod with the valve are then withdrawn, when the workmen can insert the same key (which is adapted to fit the head of the cock) down into the box to open or close the stop-cock O.
In applying the parts the valve is inserted in place, with the handle G on opposite sides of the lugs j, when by giving it a quarter-turn with the key the handle is caused to engage under the lugs, and thereby hold the valve rigidly to its seat. The cover is then applied, and the bolt H passed down and turned by the key until the joint between the box and cover is made tight.
The swiveled connection of the handle with the valve-rod enables the former to be turned independent of the same, as is evident.
By my improvements a clean box is insured to within a few inches of the head of the stopcock. The inside of the box is always dry and clean, and by no manner of means can it become filled up, thus avoiding the objections to the style of boxes now on the market.
Having described my invention, I claim--- 1. The combination, with the casing of the box, provided with stop-lugs, of the valve located in the box above the stop-cock, valverod, and the swiveled handle adapted to engage under the lugs so as to hold the valve on its seat, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the telescoping sections of the box, of the valve located in the bottom of the upper section above the stopcock, and the valve stem or rod provided with locking means for holding the valve on its seat, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the casing of the box, of the valve seated therein above the stop-cock, the valve stem or rod projecting upwardly from the valve, and locking means for the stem or rod to hold the valve on its seat, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the casing of the box, provided with stop lugs, of the valve seated in the casing above the stop-cock, and the rod or stem projecting upwardly from the valve and having its upper end constructed to be held in position by the stop-lugs, as set forth.
5. The combination, with the telescoping sections of the box, of the valve located in the bottom of the upper section above the stopcock, the valve stem or rod projecting upwardly from the valve, and lugs or stops in the top of the upper section to lock the valve stem or rod, as set forth.
6. The combination, with the casing of the box, of the valve located in the box above the stop-cock, valve stem or rod, locking means therefor, the cover, and the bolt holding the cover in place and connecting with the valve stem or rod, as set-forth.
7. The combination, with the casing of the box, of the valve in the casing to close communication with the stopcock, locking means for the valve, the detachable cover closing the top of the casing, locking means for the cover, and a supplemental cap closing over the top of the cover, as set forth.
8. The combination, with the casing of the box, of the cover closing the top of the casing, the securing-bolts for the cover, and the supplemental cap fitting down within the de pressed top of the cover over the heads of the securing-bolts, as set forth.
9. The combination, with the casing of the box,ofthe valvein the casing to close communication with the stop-cock, the valve stem or rod, and locking means therefor, said valve being withdrawn from the box by its stem or rod to allow access to the stop-cock, as set forth.
10. The combination, with the box, of the valve, valve stem or rod, the swiveled handle at the upper end of the said rod, the stops or lugs on the inner side of the box, the cover, and a bolt connecting the cover and handle, as set forth.
, 11. The combination, with the telescoping sections of the box, of the stops or logs on the upper section, the valve seated in the lower end of the upper section, the valve rod or stem, the handle connected with the rod or stem, a projection on the handle, the cover, a bolt securing the cover in place, and the supplemental hinged cap, said .bolt and the pro jection on the handle and stop-cock being capable of turning by the same key, as set forth.
12. The combination, with the box, of the valve, valve rod or stem, swiveled handle at upper end of rod, stops or lugs on the inner side of the box, the cover closing over the top thereof, and a securing-bolt for the cover, the head of the bolt and the handle being adapted to be turned by the same key, as set forth.
13. The combination, with the stopcock, of the inclosing-box, the valve, valve rod or stem, the handle at the upper end of said rod or stem, the cover closing over the top of the box, the securing-bolt for the cover, and the key constructed to turn either the securingbolt, the handle, or the stop-cock, as set forth.
14. The combination, with the stop-cock, of the inclosing-box, the valve, valve rod or stem, locking means therefor, the cover also provided with looking devices, and the key constructed to actuate the locking means of both the cover and valve-stem and also turn the stopcock, as set forth.
