Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ll une lli, lidi@ Application filed December 4, 1917. Serial No. 205,400.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES HOWDEN HUME, a subject of the King of the United. Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closures or Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved closure or door, such for example as a smoke box door, and has for its primary object to provide a construction which insures a tight tting of the door at the margin of the seating surface, more particularly adjacent to that edge at which the door hinge is located, whether the door be hinged at either of the sides or at the top or bottom.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a front elevation showing a side-hinged door according to the invention, Fig. 2 a part sectional plan, and Fig. 3 a detail view in part elevation part section at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a top-hinged door.
Referring to the drawings, there is or are bolted or otherwise secured to the stile plate l or other fixed structure an angle bracket or brackets 2 forming or each forming a stationary hinge element with which cooperates a movable hinge element 3 bolted or otherwise secured to the door 4.
Between the cooperating hinge elements 2, 3 is tted so as to be slidable in a direction parallel with the axis of the hinge a wedge device constituted, for example, by
an angle bar 5 to which is or are riveted or otherwise secured a wedge or wedges proper shown at 6, one end of the wedge or of one of the wedges being exposed so as to be capable of being conveniently struck by a hammer in order to bring such wedge into or out of bearing engagement with a seating face presented by the hinged element 2.
As shown, the hinge element 3 is formed with a reduced portion 7 preferably of rectangular section fitting a slot formed in the angle bar, so as to permit longitudinal Inovement only of the wedge device.
What I claimris 1. In combination, a door hinged along one edge and a slidable wedge device fitted adjacent to the hinged edge and movable in a plane parallel to the pintle of the hinge so as to coperate with the hinge to eEeot a tight fitting of the door at its hinged edge.
2. In combination, a door, a stationary hinge element secured to one edge of said door, a pivoted hinge element cooperating with said irst-mentioned hinge element, and a slidable wedge device located between said hinge elements and slidable in a direction parallel with said edge, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses.
