REVOLVER-SWORD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1918.
Application filed December 29, 1917. Serial No. 209,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LENARDIFJ, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolver- Swords, of which the following is a specification' The primary object of the invention is the provision offa combined fire arm and knife adapted for use either as a revolver for shootin the enemy or as a sword, the elements being easily and quickly adjusted for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a -revolver having a blade attachment adapted for normally folded inoperative position, automatic shifting means being arranged for the blade for positioning the same in operative locked arrangement.
A still further object of the device is the provision of a fire arm havin a cutting portion adapted for folding w en not in use, the structure being strong and serviceable as well as compact in arrangement and easy to manufacture.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device v'ith a portion of the revolver removed.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same with the blade folded and with parts shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken upon line IVIV of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a bottom. plan. View thereof.
It: is often desirable for soldiers to be provided with both a revolver and a sword and my invention makes provision for such need in a single implement of warfare, the same broadly consisting of a fire arm 10 in the nature of a revolver having a blade sword member 11 adjustably carried thereby.
The blade 11 has a base 12 hinged to the barrel 13 of the revolver as at 14 and whereby the blade is swin ingly mounted upon the revolver adapted or assuming its folded position with the cutting edge 15 of the blade positioned within a longitudinal groove 16 upon the to whenever desired to ren er the blade inoperative as shown in 3 and 4 of the drawof the barrel 13 ing. .Opposite spring clips 17 are carried by the barrel 13 adjacent the groove 16 for seating within notches 18 on opposite sides of the blade 11 when the latter is closed while a spring 19 is arranged within the groove 16 for automatically opening the blade upon releasing the clip 17.
A cylindrical lug 20 is centrally carried by the base 12 adapted for reception Within the flared muzzle 21 of the barrel 13 when the blade 11 is in its operative position longitudinally of the barrel. A locking spring 22 is secured beneath the barrel 13 having a keeper opening 23 therein adapted for the automatic reception of a projectin finger 24 upon the base 12 when the blade is opened, it being understood that a beveled side 25 of the finger engages the slightly open free end 26 of the spring 22, thereby depressing the spring and permittin the finger to enter the opening 23 thereo From this detailed description of the invention, it will be readily understood that when the blade 11 is operatively arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the spring 22 may be manually released from the finger 24 and the blade swung upon its hinge 14 positioning the cutting edge 15 thereof protectingly within the groove 16 with the clip 17 retaining the blade closed with the spring 19 depressed. The revolver 10 may then be employed for shooting but upon releasing the clips 17, the spring 19 gives an arcuate movement to the blade 11 positioning the blade longitudinally of the barrel 13 to be locked in position by the spring 22. The blade 11 may then be employed as a sword or a cutting knife it being noted that the cutting portion in no manner tends to move the blade upon its hinge 14 nor to unlock the same. A serviceable combination fire arm is arranged possessing great strength and readily adjustable for use either as a sword or revolver when required, it being understood that a usual form of handle or butt is provided for the revolver 10 serving as a handle for both the fire arm and the sword.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination with a revolver barrel having a longitudinal groove in the upper side thereof, a blade having a base hinged adjacent one edge to the barrel at one end of the groove and provided with a cutting edge adapted for seating within the groove when the blade is folded, retaining clips adapted for engaging the blade when folded, a return spring for the blade arranged within said groove in contact with the blade and under compression when the blade is folded, a lug upon said base adapted for automatic positioning within the muzzle of the barrel upon the operative swinging movement of the blade when released, a projecting finger upon said base and a locking spring for the blade when it is arranged with an opening adapted for the reception of said finger.
2. A device of the class described comprising in combination with a, revolver barsaid notches when the blade is in its folded v inoperative position, an opening spring for the blade normally under tension when the blade is closed adapted for opening the blade upon releasing said clips telescoping end portions for said blade and barrelwhen the blade is open and a locking spring carried by the barrel adapted for maintaining 5 the blade in its open arrangement.
In testimony whereof I aflix *my signature.
