JOHNIBIZON, or WYANDOTTE, MICHIGAN.
BAYONET AND write-comma.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 10, 1918. Serial No. 253,389.
This invention relates to improvements in implements of warfare and particularly to types known as bayonets adapted to be used in connection with rifles.
The principal object of'the invention is to combine with a conventional typeof'bayonet, a wire cutting device by means of which strands of wire, formed into entanglements and fences may be readily severed.
A further object is to provide such means, so combined with the hilt or shank of-a bayonet as to present no objectionable appearance and which is easily operated.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure l is a side elevational view showing a conventional type of bayonet having an embodiment of the invention combined with the handle.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is another side elevational view looking from the interior of the opposite handle element.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is another transverse sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view, looking from the inner side and lower end of the wire cutting lever, and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view, showing one of the wire cutting elements.
In the drawing the numeral 10, designates the main or body portion of the handle, with which is engaged a ferrule 11, having an extending open eye or loop 12, engageable with the barrel of the rifle and extending beyond the ferrule is a double edge blade 14, terminating in an acute sharp point 15.
Formed longitudinally in the butt 18, of the handle is an under-cut groove or recess 19, adapted to engage with keepers set in the rifle barrel, so that the handle of the blade to be held frictionally bayonet may be firmly affixed thereto in the Patented DecQlO, 1918.
ordinary manner, this butt is integrally. formed with theshank .20, extending rearward from theblade 14 the entire length of the handle, and in which is a notch 21', re-,
ceptive of the wire to be out.
A raised c-urved'boss22, extends upward from the shank 20, adjacent to similar raised bosses 23, and30 formed with rigid parts of the handle andthrough which passes a pivot pin 25, the side elements27 and 28 ofthe handle, being further held to the central stem or shank 20, by fixed rivets 29, thecom- :bined sides extending lengthwise between the collar or ferrule 11, and the end enlargement or butt 18.
Pivoted between the bosses 22 and 30, on the pin 25, is a plate lever having an outer curved portion 32 and a cam-like raised edge 33, extending outward, while extending in the opposite direction is a flat brace ele ment 35, formed with a hollow cover 36, shaped to conform with the handle 10, and having an undercut recess 37 in the bottom 38, with which is engageable a projection 40, formed with a block 41, and actuated by the extending knob 43, a flat spring 42, engaging upon either side of an angular detent 45,
. formed with the base of the sliding block 41,
which operates in a recess 46 in the outer portion of the butt 18.
A sliding shear plate 48, is guided in a recess 49, formed in the handle, while at the bottom of the recess is a longitudinal slot 50, engageable with a spline or key 51, formed at the bottom of the shear blade 48, so it is guided laterally. The shear blade is formed with a beveled cutting edge 52, while upon the opposite side is an extending finger 54, normally pressed downward by a coiled compression spring 55, causing the cutter against the cam 33, of the actuating lever 36. i
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat and effective implement for cutting wire has been disclosed and that the same is conveniently combined with a bayonet or like implement, the use of one being possible without interfering in any manner with the use of the other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an implement of the class described, the combination with a knife blade, and a handle rigidly engaged therewith, of a fixed shearblade attached in said handle adjacent to said knife blade, a movable shear blade slidably arranged in said handle, a lever handle having a longitudinal recess upon one side, of a fixed s ear blade secured in said handle adjacent to said knife blade, a movable shear blade slidabl'y engaged in said handle, a lever pivoted in said handle and adapted to form a part thereof when in a closed position, means for normally holding said lever in close engagement with said handle, and a cam formed with said lever Copies of this patent may be obtained for fiv e cents each, by addressing the adapted to actuate said movable shear blade into operative position.
3. In an implement of the class described, the combination with a bayonet comprising a knife and a handle permanently engaged therewith, of a lever pivoted in said handle and forming a part thereof, means for normally holding said lever in intimate engagement with said handle, a fixed shear blade set in said handle adjacent to the knife, a sliding shear blade am nged in said handle and adapted to be operated by said lever, a detent movable in said handle engageable with the free end of said lever, means for operating said detent, and means for holding said detent in either of its adjusted positi'o'ns.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature,
JOHN BIZON.
