Description

FRANK BALsoN, or
PA-Tuur orales.
OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
GUN-STOCK.
No. 894,101. specificatien of Lettersratent. Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed October 22, 1907. Serial No.- 398,585.
.To all whom it mag/concern: Be it known that I, FRANK BaLsoN, a citi- 'zenof United States, residing at Omaha, in
the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska,
have invented certain new'and useful ',Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of ,vvl1ichthe fol.
Wing is a specification. My inventlon relates to improvements 1n I gun stocks, and has for its primary object to Vwhich is thorou weapon.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an attachment -of this character which may be re'adily'mounted in position upon the stock of the gun, which is of simple, durable and inex ,ensive construction, and
, gh. y practical in every particular.' y
With' these and other objects in view, my/ invention consists of a gun Vstock providedr with a series of compartments to receive implernents or the like, and' a' closure to the, compartments, v the closure serving as' the vbutt plate'to the gun.
The invention further consists of a carrying attachment for gn stocks4 embodying' certain'other novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein, and as illustrated/inthe accompanying drawings, in whic'lv4 Figure 1, is' aside'elevation of a shot-gun stock embodying the features of my invention, parts being broken away. and in section to illustrate more clearly the diiferent features of construction. Fig. 2, is an end view of thel same with the cover`Vv late open. .Fi 3, i s a broken detail view-o the spring catc mechanism for holding the cover closed.. F ig. 4,
vis a' detailsectional view-of the tch mechanism of the butt plate;- Fig. 5, is a broken y sideelevation showing the invention ada `ted to the stock of a'riile andan improved orm of hunting knife to be used with the rifle 2. Inj the drawings: The numeral 1, designates the stock of anordinary gun which is the same asis usual-with the exceptionthat a or chambers 2, are'fornne'd` --series of. openings therein in whic v may bestored the tools or other accessories generally found useful in the handling of a gun, such as a screw driver,
file, shell extractor, cleaning rod or other like devices.
Completely encircling the butt end or rim of the stock, is a metallic band or cap piece 3, which is secured in place bymeans of screws 4, or other suitablev fastenings. The outer edge of this band or butt lpiece is approximately straight and prefera the end of the stock, while the inner edge of the butt piece may be curved forwardlyas shown, or it may be of any other fanciful design. The butt iece is applied to the' stock w1th its surface evel with the surface of the stock so that there are no out-cro ping edges to interfere the ready handling of the At one of'its side/ edges, the butt piece is provided with alseries of ears 5, which are 'usually three ,in/number and are referably raised or outstanding from the surface ofthe butt piece! common closure is provided for the/eo/mpartments in the end of the stock whiclffis/n the form of a cover or butt plate Q,{havi/ng ears 7-, at one of its side edges to in- 'terlock between the ears-on the butt ieee, /the pin or p'intle 8, serving to establis .the two in hinged relation. The hinge ears on Athebutt.piece'and butt plate are preferably formed integral vwith the respective parts, and as'shown in the drawings they may be formed by roviding an extension 9, at the edge of each) member, then dubling the extension back so as to provide a loop for the passage of the pintle. A fiat spring 10, is secured on the inner face. of the butt plate near the edge vopposite thehinge connection and this spring has a curvedzend 11, which bears ly on a line with -in a recess 12, formed in the inner face of the f jbutt iece, the spring` thus normally serving to ho d the butt plate open or extended to .permit examination of the containers or' compartments in the stock. lf so desired, in-
stead of dividing the stock into compartments, thestock may be made hollow to pro- -vide one large compartment for the storage ofdifferent articles. The'c'over late is pref A erably formed with an outward y 'bulged or swelled portion 13, at its upper end to assist In order to retain the cover or butt plate zclosed, a hooked lug or latch..14,` is provided on the edge 'ofthe butt plate opposite the hinge joint, the latch having an inclined abut fin holding the gun to the shoulder of the;v
CJi
:ment face l5', to ride up on the inclined face or the keeper `lG.` This keeper s carried by thev fiat spring 17, which 1s secured on the 1nuer tace of the butt piece, lthe keeper projectal ing through an opening 1.8, in the butt piece so as to lie in the path of the latch. A plate or guard 19, is ap )lied to the outer face ot the butt piece and tlie guard formed witha seat or recess 20, in its outer edge to receive the latch on the butt plate. thus protected and as it makes smooth close joint. with the guard plate all protrudingr edges are avoided and asinooth ornamental appearance is produced.
T he guard may be grooved along its edge as at 21,0r ornainentedV in any other suitu able manner. A push button 22, projects through an opening in the guard plate and' butt piece, the push button having a llangcd head at its inner end for engagement with the lat sprin' 17 Thus by pressing on the push button, tlie keeper is depressed from engagen ment with the latch on the butt ilate, the butt plate thereby being freed, the release spring carried bythe butt plate forces the same open and vexposes the compartments or compartment in the gunl stock to view ln l? ig. l, the invention is shown in coinhination with the stock of a shot gun and in this view a hatchet and shell extractor are indicated as adapted to he seated in the cornu pertinents in the stock, \as these tools are particularly useful in colznhination with a gun of this character. 0n the other hand a hunting knife Whih might he attached to the end of the barrel would prove a valuable ad-V junct to agarne rifle, and in this connection 1n Figi, 5, l have shown my improved 'torni of hunting knife as adapted to a rifle. The knife consists of the blade 2.4, which is preferably double-edged and pointed, the knife being attached hy an angular shank portion 25, to the sleeve 26, which is ada ted to he sli ped Aover the end ol the gun barrel, the s eeve having a notch .7, therein to engage the sight on the barrel. A pair of ears 28, are provided on the lower circuniierence ol the sleeve and pivoted between said ears is the latch 29. A securing stud is rovided on f the rifle barrel and the latch is orrned with an o ironing 31, to pass over the stud and there )y lock the knife on the end of the barrel. A spring pressed plunger' 32, is slidably journaled in the lower side of the sleeve, the said plunger exerting its tension, aga' st the rearward extension 33, on the end il the latch, and thereby serving to hold the latch ineither the release or locking position with respect to the stud on the gun barrel. A jointed cleaning rod 34, also shown as The latch is era-ier seated in suitable compartments in the stock ol the rifle. ln smaller rijles Where the hunting knife would not be as useful as in the larger ones, the stock may simply be formed. with compartments for the reception of cartridges and a cleaning rod, or the like.
Frein tie "foregoin f description taken in connectionwith the c rawings the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated and it Will he apparent that I have reduced an attachrnent 'for gun stocks which is entirely practical and desirable and which accomplishes all the results herein set vforth as' the objects of the invention.
I claim.:
l. The combination with a un stock having a series of openings in the liutt thereof, a hatt 'nece secured thereto, a butt plate hinged to the butt piece, a spring tending to force the hutt plate open, a hooked detent carried by the butt plate, a spriner carried by the butt piece, a stud carried thereby and projecting through. an openin,lr in the butt piece to engage the detent on tie butt plate, and a push hutten having a headed inner end to engage the spring and .release the stud troni engagement with the detcnt.
2. The gun stock having a series ol openings therein, a butt piece secured thereto, a
. butt plate hinged to the butt piece and a 1 spring 'lor forcing the dplate normally open, a
hooked detont carrie by the hutt plate, a guard. carried by the butt piece recessed to receive the detent, a spring carried by the butt piece, a lug carried by the spring and projecting throu h an opening in the butt piece to engage t e hooked detent and forni a kec er to t'ie'same, and a headed button sea-te'- in the guard and in engagement with the spring to release the keeper from engagement with thedetent.
3. ln combination With a gun stock, a hutt piece secured thereto, a butt plate hinged to the butt piece, a spring exerting tension to force the plate open, a detent carried by the butt plate, a guard on the butt piece to receive the detent, a spring carried )y the butt piece, a keeper carried by the spring projecting through an opening in the butt piece to engage the detent, and a button seated in the guard to release the keeper from engagement with the datent.
ln testimony whereof lf allix my signature in presence ol two Witnesses.
