To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT SWIMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident or" the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gas cock which is specially applicable to a gas burner with a pilot light, and by means of which a supply of or other iiuid may be alternately turned on and oil by similar successive move ments of an operating device.

The gas cock is represented with the valve housing 20 having formed therewith he threaded inlet end 21, with the stop pin 22 and inlet port 23. A gas supply pipe 2i engages the inlet end 21. The said valve housing has also formed therewith the outlet port 26 which is axially in line with the port Flattened sides 27 and 28 are formed with said housing.
A lamp is shown with the lamp pipe 30, which latter is in threaded engagement with the valve housing 20. A. mantle 31 is connected to the lamp pipe 30, as well as the globe holder 32. A globe 33 extends from the globe holder 32. Pilot piping 34L with the valve 35 extends from the inlet end 21 to the mantle 31.
The valve housing 20 has formed therewith the tapered valve seat 38 for the tapered plug valve 40 having the ports ll and 4-2, which are at right angles to each other.
The plug valve 40 carries in threaded engagement at its smaller end the screw 45. Cup washers as, and 4:7 encircle the said screw. The washer 46 bears against the flattened side 27 of the valve housing 20, and the washer t? bears against the under side of the head of the screw 4L5. A spring 418 encircles the said screw and bears between said cup washers. A shank 50 is formed at the larger end of the plug valve 40, and has fastened thereto the ratchet wheel 52.

and 58 is loosely supported or pivoted upon the shank 50. A guide notch 59 in the path of the stop pin 22 and the stop 60 are formed with the lever 56. A screw 62 in threaded engagement with the. shank 5O prevents the lateral displacement of the lever 56. A spring has one end fastened to the arm 57 and its other end is fastened to the globe holder A counterweighted pawl 67 with the counterwei hted end 68,
toe 69 and the heel 70 is pivoted on the operating lever 56 by means of the pivot 71. An operating chain extends from the arm 58.
Tooperate the gas cock it may be considered that the port ll of the plug valve i0 is located in its open position, by virtue of which gas is fedtrom the supply pipe 24L to the mantle 31, by way of the ports 23, ll and 26. When the chain 75 is pulled down the plug valve 40 is turned through an angle equal to the length of the effective are of the notch 59, by virtue of the pawl- 67 hearing down on one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 52. This locates both the ports ll and 42 in their closed positions, by means of which the flow of gas is cut off from the mantle 31.
Upon the release of the chain 75 the operating lever 56 is pulled up by the spring 65, and the toe 69 rides up on one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 52, and the centrifugal force of the pawl 67 carries the heel 70 against the stop 60. The pawl rebounds, and with the assistance of the counterweighted end 68 is brought into proper position for the next teeth of the ratchet wheel The ports 4:1 and i2 of the plug valve i0 are now in their closed positions with respect to the ports 23 and 26 of the valve housing 20.
To locate said plug valve iO with one of its ports in an open position with respect to the ports 23 and 26, the operator again pulls the chain 7 5 and a second cycle of operations take place which allows the gas to flow to the burner of the lamp.
Referring to Figs. 4i and 5 the same elements, that is to say, the valve housing 20 with the threaded inlet end 21, step pin 22, supply pipe 24, lamp pipe 30, pilot piping 34, valve 35, screw l5, washers e6, l7, ratchetwheel 52 and pawl 67 are shown. in place of the operating lever 56, an operating lever is indicated with one arm 81 with the stop 82 and guide notch 83', which latter is similar to 59. The pawl 67 with the counterweighted end 68, toe 69 and heel 7 0 is pivoted to the operating lever 80. A spring 85 connects the arm 81 with the inlet end 21 of the valve housing 20. The chain 7 5 extends from the arm 81. The'mode of operation of this modification is similar to that already described.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
In a gas cook the combination of a housing, a valve for the housing, a ratchet wheel carried by the valve, an operating lever comprising two arms pivoted on the valve and extending on opposite sides thereof, the said lever having a notch, a stop pin extending from the housing engaged by said notch to control the extent of the movements of the lever, a chain for one of said arms, a spring for the other arm, and a pawl with a counter weight at its upper portion thereof, and having a heel, pivoted on the operating lever, the stop on the lever coacting with said heel to engage said pawl with said ratchet wheel.
