To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS KNEZEK, a citizen of ti e United States, and residing at Woodhaven, Long Island,'in the county of Queens and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Valves for Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to 1 these and other objectsin view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed described.
The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in U. S. Patent No. 1,121,024, granted to me December 15, 1914; and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved valve; Fig. 2 a sectional plan view thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and, Figs. 3, t and 5 diagrammatic sectional views of the valve and showing it in different positions.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, l have shown at a a gas supply pipe such as is usually employed in connection with gas stoves or ranges and with which, in practice, a number of valve devices, one for each burner of the stove or range are employed. The valve device shown comprises a valve body I) having the usual transverse bore 6 and provided at one side with a threaded coupling neck 6 and on the opposite side with a threaded coupling neck 6 having an interior thread and with which the pipe 0 which leads to the burner is connected.
Mounted vertically in and passing through the valve body 6 is a plug valve d, the end of which that passes through the valve and operating as herein body Z2 being tapered as shown at (Z and said plug valve is provided with a trans verse bore (Z which corresponds with the bore 6 in the valve body.
The top surface of the valve body 6 is provided in the opposite sides thereof with radial recesses 6 and in the back side portion of said body and in the top surface thereofis a wide radial recess 6. The opposite side walls of which are also beveled or radially arranged as shown at 6 The plug valve (Z is provided with an upwardly directed extension 6% having a forwardly directed arm 0F, and formed in the back part of the upward extension (Z of said plug valve is a vertically arranged groove (Z which communicates with the central slot or opening (Z formed in the elbow of the arm d" and which extends entirely through said elbow, and pivoted in the slot or opening d as shown at d is a crank arm 6- having a downwardly directed memher 0 which fits in and is movable in the groove cl, and a downwardly and forwardly directed member (2 which passes through the slot or opening d and extends forwardly beneath the arm and a spring f isplac'ed between the arm member 6 and the back of the groove (5.
The lower end of the arm member 6 forms a 'nose 6* adapted to fit in the areshaped and radial recess Z) and to swing in said recess, and said nose is also adapt-ed to enter the recesses at the opposite sides of the plug valve, and the movement of the arm member 6 is a radial movement, and said nose of said arm member is always in one of said recesses, and when said nose is in the recess Z) of the plug valve may be turned through an arc of approximately ninety degrees, and when said nose is in either of the recesses b the valve is locked against movement, and in order to turn the plug so as to open and close the bore or passage through the valve body, the arm d is grasped by the hand as is also the arm member 6 and said arm member 6 is drawn inwardly against the operation of the spring f. When the nose e oi the arm member c is in the recess b the plug valve may be manipulated by the arm (Z so as to fully open the valve as shown in Fig. 3, or it may be turned in either direction so as to partially open the valve as shown in Fig. 5, in which position a small pilot fiame may be maintained at all times, and the valve may be turned soas to permit of a full flow of gas to the burner Whenever desired. In order to cut off the flow of gas entirely the valve may be turned so that the nose 6 will enter either of the recesses 6 and this position of the valve is shown in Fig. 5. The plug valve (Z is provided at the back thereof and above the top of the valve body with a stop pin 9, and the'front walls of the oppositely arranged recesses are provided with raised projections 9 shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and indicated in Fig. 2, and in connection with which the stop pin 9 operates, and this construction also aids in the operation of the valve as hereinbefore described and prevents the turning of said valve beyond certain limits in either direction when the arm member e is fully inclosed in the grooved.
lVith this improvement, it will be impossible to accidentally turn the plug valve when the flow of gas is cut off, and while the valve when in the open position as shown in Fig. 2 may be accidentally turned within certain limits it can never be turned so as to fully cut off the flow of gas, and as long as the plug valve is in this position the burner will be ignited, and this, as will be understood prevents the serious and sometimes fatal accidents which frequently result from the use of this class of valves.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A valve device of the class described, comprising a valve body having a central bore and the top surface of which is provided in the opposite sides thereof with radial recesses, and between said recesses with an arc-shaped radial recess, and a plug valve which projects above the body and is provided with a backwardly directed arm, the upward projection of said plug valve being provided in the front side thereof with Copies of this patent may be obtained for a vertical groove which communicates with a slot or opening in the elbow of said arm and which opens forwardly and baclnvardly therethrough, and a crank arm pivoted in said slot or opening and provided with a downwardly directed member movable in said groove, and a backwardly directed memher which passes downwardly and backwardly beneath said arm, and a spring device for holding said crank arm in operative position.
2. A valve device of the class described, comprising a valve body having a central bore and the top surface of which is provided in the opposite sides thereof with radial recesses, and between said recesses with an arc-shaped radial recess, and a plug valve which projects above the body and is provided with a backwardly directed arm, the upward projection of said plug valve being provided in the front side thereof with a vertical groove which communicates with a slot or opening in the elbow of said arm and which opens forwardly and backwardly therethrough, and a crank arm pivoted in said slot or opening and provided with a downwardly directed member movable in said groove, and a backwardly directed member which passes downwardly and backwardly beneath said arm, and a spring device for holding said crank arm in operative position, the arm member which fits in and is movable in said groove being provided with a nose piece adapted to operate in said recesses and move laterally in the arc-shaped recess.
